Impermanence - Othon

Impermanence
Othon’s much-anticipated second album is finally here! Othon Mataragas is a genre-bending songwriter, a non-conformist composer and an eccentric pianist. He has collaborated on the soundtrack to the Bruce LaBruce film "Otto; or Up With Dead People and a new live accompaniment to the Derek Jarman film "The Angelic Conversation" together with the father of industrial music Peter Christopherson (Throbbing Gristle, Coil). His music has been featured in comedy shows by David Hoyle, art exhibitions like 'Gay Icons' at the National Portrait Gallery and he has worked with musicians like Marc Almond, Current 93 and Laura Moody. For "Impermanence”, his new highly ambitious music venture, Othon’s ongoing collaborator Ernesto Tomasini demonstrates his huge 4 octave range across many of its tracks: 'At Night', 'The Fall' '59' 'A Little Dream' and ‘Impermanence’. Marc Almond, who also guests in the album, lends his voice to the darkest and most torturous moment on the record with his interpretation of the title track and his dramatic rendition of 'Last Night I Paid To Close My Eyes’. Camille O’Sullivan contributes with her passionate storytelling voice to ‘A Trip to Paradise’ and the songwriter himself sings on ‘All Is Too Soon’ a song dedicated to a childhood friend who recently died of a heroin overdose. Other guests include guitarist Justin Jones (And Also the Trees), vocalist Beverly Crome (The Cesarians) and the Elysian Quartet. Othon has done the album’s lush arrangements and Troy Banarzi has produced the title track.

Impermanence is an important landmark in Othon's artistic evolution. Inspired by a series of Tibetan Tantric meditations, it explores, in his words, "how our small world and everything that surrounds it may eventually be destroyed but, also, how Love can play a transformative role by giving birth to a young and naughty phoenix from the ashes of our old-world emotions”.

Stylistically, Impermanence is virtually indefinable - with 50s pop, death baroque, post-minimalist and sleazy folk references, Othon has given his album the genre of 'PAN muzik'; 'a new off-limits musical genre that includes all genres! An all-embracing and holistic style of music neither exclusively experimental nor pop, neither strictly progressive nor banal.

Press:-

"Impermanence is no ordinary musical experience. Demanding open ears and open mind, this is a varied mood-swinging set of avant-garde collaborations. Othon Mataragas is the conductor, recruiting a clutch of fellow like-minded musicians and vocalists to share the almost operatic oral drama.”

Fellini Masterpieces: La Strada / Nights of Cabiria
The artistic partnership between film director Federico Fellini and composer Nino Rota was one of the most productive and enduring in cinema history. "La Strada" and "Nights of Cabiria" announced their arrival on the scene to an awestruck Italian and international public. Both movies won academy awards for "the best foreign language film"; establishing the style that would soon reach full expression with the renowned "La Dolce Vita".

These are the original mono soundtracks recorded in 1952 and 1956 respectively: the same recordings that are used on the films and both are long out of print in any format.

Tasmanian Tiger EP (Strictly Limited Edition on CD & 7" Vinyl)
TASMANIAN TIGER - A STRICTLY LIMITED EDITION 4-TRACK COLOURED VINYL 7” EP IN GATEFOLD SLEEVE PACKAGED WITH 4 TRACK CD. RELEASED ON 10th FEBRUARY 2014. PRE-ORDER YOUR COPY NOW...

Marc Almond is back with a brand new 4-track EP, featuring a plethora of excellent ‘friends’ including Jarvis Cocker (Pulp) and Carl Barat (The Libertines, Dirty Pretty Things). Following the successful experience with double A single ‘Burn Bright/The Dancing Marquis’, legendaryproducer Tony Visconti (Bowie, T-Rex, The Moody Blues, Morrissey) is also back working alongside Marc.

Next to producer Tris Penna, Visconti lends a helping hand on string arrangements and mixing duties for the opening track, ‘Tasmanian Tiger’, and ‘Death of a Dandy’, the latter inspired by the recent death of Soho’s tragic artist Sebastian Horsley and featuring special guest Danielz from T-Rex tribute ‘T.Rextasy’. Jarvis Cocker brings to the mix an infectious electro-pop number he wrote for the occasion, ‘Worship Me Now’, where he also features on backing vocals and takes care of production with Jason Buckle (All Seeing I). Completing the excellent recording, ‘Love Is Not On Trial’ sees Almond continuing his collaboration with Carl Barat, his co-star in the 2012 opera ‘Poppea’ at Theatre du Chatelet in Paris. Produced again by Tris Penna, the song was written especially for Marc by Carl, who also features on guitar and vocals.

The eclectic 4 track EP is available on a strictly limited edition turquoise coloured 7" vinyl in a beautifully designed gatefold sleeve, complete with a CD of the same four songs.

PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A PRE-ORDER AND THE RECORD WILL NOT BE SENT OUT UNTIL FEBRUARY 2014

Pineal
•    Avant-pop songwriter, post-minimalist composer and award winning pianist Othon’s ambitious new album Pineal combines his classical background (Trinity Music College, The John Halford prize) with his love for fierce dance music and the ancient wisdom embodied in the sacred Ikaros (healing songs) of Brazilian tribes.

•    He collaborates with diverse talents; Marc Almond, the futuristic electro-cabaret multi-octave opera singer Ernesto Tomasini, Bird Radio (recipient of an 2014 Aldeburgh Festival Grant) and the indigenous Amazonian shamans Javier Arevalo Shahuano and Jessica Ramirez Seopa.

•    The album’s title points to the brain’s pineal gland, traditionally responsible for mystical awakenings and inner visions. Ayahuasca, the powerful Amazonian medicinal brew, is a pineal gland activator that Othon believes enables him to access hidden parts of his psyche. His participation in mind-expanding Ayahuasca ceremonies in the midst of the rain forest accom-panied by the hypnotic shamanic singing, inspired Othon to create ‘Pineal’. It’s an album that, in the eclectic tradition of genre-inclusive ‘PAN-muzik’ veers from cinematic pop, fierce shamanic techno, downtempo jungle and violin driven electronica.

•    Othon has uniquely transformed ancient shamanic ceremony into the evocative and hypnotic soundscapes that feature in the album’s second part. The shamans’ blessing was granted by chiefs of the Kaxinawá tribe to turn one of their sacred songs ‘Pasha Dume’ into a hard-edged choral techno track and, likewise, a traditional Umbandan (Afro-Brazilian religion) sung accompaniment to sacred ceremonies, ‘Cobra Coral’ is reworked into tribal dance track on which Marc Almond sings in the original Brazilian.

•    Other genre-breaking highlights of the album include ‘Japan Suite’ – a heartbreaking mini requiem about the Fukushima nuclear tragedy and ‘Dawn Yet To Come’ described by Othon as ‘melancholic techno with pre-Classical counterpoint, topped by the ecstatic singing of a gospel choir.

Pineal; the most dramatic and wild musical imaginings.
Pineal; genre-defying mash-ups and stylistic smashings through.
Pineal; accomplished soundscapes with percussive and shamanic force.
Pineal; less an album, more a sensibility.

This product is released June 23 2014 and will not be dispatched before this date.
