Marc Almond in Orpheus In Exile - The Songs Of Vadim Kozin - Marc Almond

Marc Almond in Orpheus In Exile - The Songs Of Vadim Kozin
Released on 07/09/09. Marc Almond, a latter day curator of popular song, has rediscovered the songbook of Vadim Kozin. Kozin was the Soviet era's much-loved, exiled then forgotten singer of Gypsy Folk and Russian Torch Song Romances.

Almond discovered Kozin's work on his first visit to Russia in 1992 and was immediately taken with the purity and passion of his voice, as well as the beauty and melancholy of his songs, which are enhanced by the hardships Kozin suffered throughout his life. Marc has joined creative forces with Russian producer and musical arranger Alexei Fedorov who shares both Marc's love of Kozin and his aim to help bring his repertoire to a new audience. The songs have been specially translated for Marc and have never been sung in English before.

Many Marc Almond and Soft Cell hits are featured in the performance, including "Stories Of Johnny", "Tears Run Rings" and "Mother Fist".

The DVD also features three bonus tracks, including the number one hit "Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart", taken from the matinee performance at the Berlin show featured in the first Marc Almond DVD release. Feasting With Panthers
Feasting With Panthers is a collaboration between Marc Almond and composer Michael Cashmore setting poems of Count Eric Stenbock plus unique translations by celebrated poet Jeremy Reed of poems by Jean Genet, Rimbaud, Paul Verlaine - as well as Reed's own poetry - to music. 'Decadent' poems of thwarted love, ill-fated romance, decadence and death are woven with homo-eroticism and laced with opium and are accompanied by Michael Cashmore's haunting and melancholic music that gives the verses a feeling of yearning for beauty and a longing for a lost innocence and youth. The album was recorded over several years sending music files by e-mail and post, the artists never once recording together in the studio: Berlin based Michael Cashmore working at home to compose the music, playing all of the instruments and adding Marc's vocals from files recorded in London. The result is a glorious union, both in voice and music, complementing the texts. The project began after Current 93's David Tibet gave Marc a book of poems by the Baltic German poet Count Stanislaus Eric Stenbock that he had published through the Durtro label . Marc was instantly attracted to the dark erotic and melancholic yearning in the verse and contacted Michael Cashmore who he had previously worked with on Current 93's reading of Idumea. He felt Michael would have the right understanding of the verse with his intricate, beautiful musical compositions. From this, the project developed to include many of Marc's favourite poems by some of his favourite 'outsider' poets with common ground. Marc and Michael released a limited edition of Stenbock's 'Gabriel and The Lunatic Lover' through Durtro and performed both songs at The Queen Elizabeth Hall in London with Current 93 (see YouTube) in 2008. The complete album is now released through Cherry Red/ Strike Force Entertainment.

Marc Almond is back with a brand new 4-track EP, featuring a plethora of excellent ‘friends’ including Jarvis Cocker (Pulp) and Carl Barat (The Libertines, Dirty Pretty Things). Following the successful experience with double A single ‘Burn Bright/The Dancing Marquis’, legendaryproducer Tony Visconti (Bowie, T-Rex, The Moody Blues, Morrissey) is also back working alongside Marc.

Next to producer Tris Penna, Visconti lends a helping hand on string arrangements and mixing duties for the opening track, ‘Tasmanian Tiger’, and ‘Death of a Dandy’, the latter inspired by the recent death of Soho’s tragic artist Sebastian Horsley and featuring special guest Danielz from T-Rex tribute ‘T.Rextasy’. Jarvis Cocker brings to the mix an infectious electro-pop number he wrote for the occasion, ‘Worship Me Now’, where he also features on backing vocals and takes care of production with Jason Buckle (All Seeing I). Completing the excellent recording, ‘Love Is Not On Trial’ sees Almond continuing his collaboration with Carl Barat, his co-star in the 2012 opera ‘Poppea’ at Theatre du Chatelet in Paris. •    New release ‘Dancing Marquis’ compiles together the 6 tracks released previously on two strictly limited edition vinyl EPs and adds another two brand new tracks and two exclusive and stunning remixes.

•    In 2013, Marc Almond realised the ambition of a lifetime when he attended a few recording sessions with the legendary record producer Tony Visconti, famous for his work with David Bowie, Hazel O'Connor, T-Rex, The Moody Blues and Morrissey. The stunning results of their unique collaboration are the two tracks 'Burn Bright' / 'The Dancing Marquis' that kick-off this CD.

•    Carrying on in this collaborative vein, the CD also includes the talents of Martin McCarrick (Siouxsie And The Banshees, Therapy?) contributing  cello on the hearteningly buoyant 'Burn Bright' and strings on the title-track 'The Dancing Marquis', a song that Marc Almond wrote 'with Henry Paget 5th Marquess of Anglesey in mind'.

•    Jarvis Cocker brings to the mix an infectious electro-pop number he wrote especially for Marc, ‘Worship Me Now’, where he also features as a special guest on backing vocals and on the production duties with Jason Buckle (All Seeing I). Two additional dance remixes of ‘Worship Me Now’ are also included exclusively on this release. ‘Love Is Not On Trial’ sees Marc Almond continuing his collaboration with Carl Barat (Libertines), his co-star in the 2012 opera ‘Poppea’ at Theatre du Chatelet in Paris.

•    Produced again by Tris Penna, the song was written especially for Marc by Carl, who also features on guitar and vocals.
