Boof! The Complete Pussy Cat 1966-1969 - Pussy Cat

Boof! The Complete Pussy Cat 1966-1969
•    Pussy Cat was the most tough sounding of France’s ‘60s yé-yé girls. She looked to Britain for her inspirations, not home-grown, upbeat Gallic pop. She covered Small Faces, The Moody Blues, The Hollies and The Zombies. Her original songs – she was a rarity and wrote her own – were energised, hard edged, melodic and stomping. She put a French twist on the mod era.

•    Boof! is the first-ever Pussy Cat – born Évelyne Courtois – collection to be issued outside France. Her complete ‘60s recordings, including two tracks unheard at the time, are collected.

•    As a special bonus, her debut release, a 1965 EP with the band Les Petites Souris is also collected. They were France’s first all-girl band. At age 17, she was their guitarist and wrote their songs. She was a pioneer.

•    Pussy Cat took her name from the Tom Jones song ‘What’s New Pussycat’. She toured France with him.

•    With extensive liner notes and illustrations, this package is the ultimate tribute to France’s one-woman musical dynamo of the 1960s.

•    This, RPM International’s latest journey to France, follows definitive releases by Antoine, Jacques Dutronc, Emily, France Gall, Chantal Goya, Johnny Hallyday and Sylvie Vartan.

•    RPM International is the authoritative home of the greatest music from France’s past.

Fellini Masterpieces: La Strada / Nights of Cabiria
The artistic partnership between film director Federico Fellini and composer Nino Rota was one of the most productive and enduring in cinema history. "La Strada" and "Nights of Cabiria" announced their arrival on the scene to an awestruck Italian and international public. Both movies won academy awards for "the best foreign language film"; establishing the style that would soon reach full expression with the renowned "La Dolce Vita".

These are the original mono soundtracks recorded in 1952 and 1956 respectively: the same recordings that are used on the films and both are long out of print in any format.

Moon River and Me
· Henry Mancini is regarded by his peers, the critics and the public to be one of the giants of popular music. With a singular playfulness and style, "Hank” composed a legacy of music for film which broke with cinema's symphonic traditions and incorporated elements of jazz and popular music.
· His theme song for Blake Edwards' Breakfast at Tiffany's, the hauntingly beautiful Moon River (with lyrics by Johnny Mercer), perfectly encapsulates the mood of the era and is amongst the most celebrated compositions of the second half of the twentieth century.
· Henry Mancini won two Oscars for Breakfast at Tiffany's one for Best Original Score, and another for Best Film Song of the Year, Moon River.
· Moon River and Me comprises Danny Williams' version of the ballad that reached number one in the UK single chart and Jerry Butler's interpretation that was a hit in America, along with seventeen cues from the original film score of Breakfast at Tiffany's (including Audrey Hepburn's plaintive version of Moon River that the composer insisted was the best) and hip jazz variations on both Moon River and the Breakfast at Tiffany's score by Barney Kessel, Eddie Harris, Art Blakey and Al Caiola.
· Adapted from Truman Capote's novella, Breakfast at Tiffany's by virtue of the daring naturalness, the elegant minimalist allure of Audrey Hepburn's iconic Holly Golightly - is arguably the first sixties film. As much of a landmark for Audrey Hepburn as it was for Mancini, Tiffany's is the pinnacle of her career and the film's stylistic influences (in attitudes and fashion) continue to prevail.

The Last Picture Show
Released in 1971 and hailed as the most impressive work by a young American director since Citizen Kane, Peter Bogdanovich's Last Picture Show is an elegiac study of life amid the dust and loneliness of a dying town. An account of adolescents coming of age filmed  under a vast, empty Texas sky.
The film has no conventional score. All of the music is from the period between November 1951 and October 1952 when the film is set and linked to each scene. It is played on home radios, car radios, truck radios, 45 rpm players, jukeboxes, and at a community Christmas dance. The Hank Williams song, heard on the radio in Sonny's old truck in the opening scene, ‘Why Don't You Love Me (Like You Used to Do)?’ sets the tone for the music as well as the movie. All of the songs featured in the film are collected together in this edition.

Low-key, perceptive, bleak, and melancholy, The Last Picture Show shares with Welles' Magnificent Ambersons, a heartache for a time and place forever gone. The film boasts some superlative performances from the ensemble cast which the Academy recognised in awarding Oscars to Cloris Leachman and the monumental Ben Johnson. It is more than a great film, it is a supremely moving work of art…

Press:-

"If your mood is right, this is a delight, with artists such as Frankie Laine, Eddy Arnold and Kay Starr showing us how it should be done, with charisma and effortless vocal performance that have rarely been bettered". 4/5* (Record Collector August 2012)

SCARED TO GET HAPPY (A Story Of Indie Pop 1980-1989) is the first box set ever to document the explosion of Indie Pop in Britain across the 1980s. Compiled in loosely chronological fashion, the five CDs chart Indie Pop’s development from the post punk era and the dominance of Scottish bands through to its genre-defining C86 period and onto the end of the decade, with the arrival of Madchester and the shoegazing sound.

Many of the bands later tasted mainstream success: Primal Scream, Aztec Camera, Stone Roses, Pulp, the Wonder Stuff, Lloyd Cole & The Commotions, the Inspiral Carpets, the Soup Dragons, the Wedding Present, James, the La’s, del Amitri, the Primitives, the Jesus & Mary Chain, Prefab Sprout, the Shamen, Cud, the Bluebells, Black, the House Of Love, Strawberry Switchblade, Pop Will Eat Itself, the Darling Buds, Fuzzbox, That Petrol Emotion, the Railway Children, Jamie Wednesday (as Carter USM), the Milltown Brothers and the Boo Radleys.
