Popsaga: Iceland's Pop Scene 1972-1977 - Various Artists

Popsaga: Iceland's Pop Scene 1972-1977
•    For the first-time ever, beyond its rocky shores, Poppsaga reveals the music the Sugarcubes generation grew up with. This is the story of Iceland’s pop scene before the outside world discovered its unique twist on music.

•    From the pure, Beatle-esque pop of Pelican to the glam-rock of Change, from the disco-influenced Poker to the yearning intimacy of Jóhann G. Jóhannssonn, Poppsaga collects music which would have entranced the world if the dice had rolled differently.

•    In the 70s, Iceland wanted to be heard by the outside world: Pelican recorded in and toured America; Change recorded in London and had a British release; Jóhann G. Jóhannsson recorded at London’s legendary Olympic Studios with Madeline Bell and ex-Jeff Beck drummer Micky Waller. Finally, these Icelandic artists are receiving the exposure they deserved.

•    Poppsaga includes special liner notes by Icelandic music expert and host of the country’s television pop quiz Dr. Gunni – Gunnar Lárus Hjálmarsson – also the author of Stuð Vors lands, the definitive history of Iceland's music which, as Blue Eyed Pop, became the first book in English on the subject.

Strange fruit
Strange Fruit' is a great undiscovered work of the acoustic rock / classic rock genres, cited by some as a minor masterpiece. In the late 60's Gary Farr made the transition from leader of R&B outfit The T-Bones to a noted singer-songwriter. Recording an album for Marmalade Records, Farr then signed to CBS Records in 1970, recording this sole album for the label. Sessions featured contributions from RICHARD THOMPSON on lead guitar and leading lights of the underground MIGHTY BABY. Unavailable on CD for many years, 'Strange Fruit' is a record made by an often overlooked singer-songwriter made available once more by Esoteric Recordings and is certain to appeal to all who adore acoustic music both melancholic and uplifting. The reissue also features the first ever CD appearance of the single edit of 'Revolution of the Season'. Our Price: £10.95

Blue & Lonesome
The classic 1963 album that took Jones from uptempo country star to the netherworld of aching melancholy. 12 sparkling diamonds from his brief spell at Mercury Records. The title alone sums up the great man and his interpretations of Don Williams' ‘Oh Lonesome Me' and a couple of Hank Williams' broodier ballads make this an absolute must for yearning lovelorn music fans anywhere. Enhanced with half a dozen cuts from his earliest ‘50s 78 recordings, the mood is supremely downbeat even when the tempo lifts.

George Jones became widely acclaimed as the king of heartbreak country and ‘Blue And Lonesome' positively ladles on the angst.

"This collection of music of the past (no music of the future; that would be impossible sci-fi) showcases Miles as a top talent who simply needed a firm musical direction.”

-Geoff Barton / Classic Rock May 2012

"With all four singer/songwriter/guitarist John Miles’ Decca albums already released by sister label Lemon, the 7T’s imprint releases one which is arguably stronger than the others, as it rounds up the 17 songs Miles released as singles A- and B-sides during his Decca tenure.”
