It's Been a Long Long Time - Hep Stars

It's Been a Long Long Time
·       Not only were The Hep Stars Sweden’s biggest band in the Sixties, they were where Benny Andersson first tasted success before achieving world-wide fame with ABBA. Without The Hep Stars, there would have been no ABBA.
·       It's Been A Long Long Time was The Hep Stars’ fourth album, released in February 1968 and not issued outside Sweden. It was their only album for the Cupol label and RPM International adds the only non-album single the band issued on the label. RPM International’s reissue is the first time the album has been released in Europe outside Sweden.
·       The sought-after and rare It's Been A Long Long Time is a classic, harmony filled sunshine pop album. It was recorded in London in 1967 with producer Steve Clark, the associate of legendary American songwriter and singer Curt Boettcher. With Clark, The Hep Stars were the first to record Boettcher’s songs "Another Time” and "Would You Like To Go”, later released in America by Sagittarius. Other songs on It's Been A Long Long Time had been recorded in America by The Association and The Ballroom.
·       A missing link in the story of ABBA, The Hep Stars’ It's Been A Long Long Time would be a legendary album even if the band didn’t feature Benny Andersson.

Restless Night : The Complete Pop-Psych Sessions 1967-71
Released on 06/09/2010. Octopus's sole 1969 long-player Restless Night is something of a treasure among '60s Brit-psych fans due to its mixture of proto-progressive riffs, accomplished pop tunes and sparkling Beatlesque flourishes. The band evolved out of the thriving Hertfordshire beat scene that also gave us The Zombies, The Gods and those other cult pop-psych heroes Forever Amber. Octopus' music was coloured by the use of keyboards and layered vocal harmonies in much the same way. As The Cortinas they enjoyed several years of local success which culminated in the 1968 CBS  single Phoebe's Flower Shop . The single was pure pop confectionery and betrayed little of the band's tight, melodic brand of rock. By the time they'd been signed to Larry Page's Penny Farthing label in 1969, their sound had expanded to encompass the burgenoning progressive scene, the dawn of the solo troubadour and the omnipresent influence of The Beatles, illustrated perfectly by their live sets of the period which included songs by Yes, Neil Young, Cat Stevens and even note-for-note renditions of "I Am The Walrus" and "Baby, You're A Rich Man"!

The first single and album opener The River is a tough dancefloor groover complete with lysergic fuzz guitar and has appeared on several compilations while the album cover art is an eye-opening classic of the "so bad it's good" school. Much to the band's horror, they discovered that Page had released a bastardised version of the album which omitted two of the original tracks and added the b-side of the single. Previous re-issues of the album have, not surprisingly, stuck to the erroneous tracklist but here at Rev-Ola we always strive to give you more. And you love it don't you, you little beauties?

New Dimensions
Field gte not in Database

The Three Degrees were hugely successful internationally throughout the seventies, particularly in the UK where they enjoyed ten top forty hits including Year Of Decision, Take Good Care Of Yourself and the anthemic ballad When Will I See You Again, all on Philadelphia International Records. New Dimensions was the trio's first album for Ariola Records where they were teamed with hotter than hot producer Giorgio Moroder, who was riding high on his work with Donna Summer.

The top forty album spent thirteen weeks on the UK album chart in 1979 and spun off three hugely successful megahits in the shape of the discofied Giving Up, Giving In and The Runner as well as the top three ballad Woman In Love.

This newly re-mastered edition features extensive liner notes and seven bonus tracks. Also available: BBR's best-selling reissue of The Three Degrees' Philadelphia International debut.

The Three Degrees-Expanded Edition
The Three Degrees' Philadelphia International Records debut made quite an impact upon it's release in 1974.

Having been R&B hit makers for years, the group were no strangers to the American Soul Chart but the pairing of the group with Philadelphia's Gamble & Huff took them to an iconic level of appreciation. The top 20 album spawned the now classic UK #1 When Will I See You Again and the top 20 hit Year Of Decision. Also featured was their Philly debut single Dirty Ol' Man which topped the charts in the Netherlands, staving off the threat of Demis Roussos in the process!

Nonetto (An Impression Of The Whole Of Brazil)
Released 18/08/08. Precocious and full of wonderment, the Nonetto and Quatuor, written by Villa-Lobos in 1924 and 1921 respectively, are surely two of the unsung minor masterpieces of the early 20th Century. In its fusion of pagan rhythms and chanting with the brittle harmonies of the avant garde, Nonetto brings to mind Stravinsky's Les Noces and Prokofiev's Scythian Suite. Yet the piece is also characterised by a freewheeling playfulness more suggestive of jazz and folk music than the concert hall. Those coming at the piece from a rock perspective are also likely to hear an uncanny foreshadowing of the more considered music of Frank Zappa. Quatuor (for flute, harp, celesta, alto saxaphone and women¹s voices) is a thoroughly magical work also; a combination of dense, even knotty, harmonies and unashamed sensuality: Heitor Villa-Lobos is one of the best-kept secrets in music. This edition restores to print two historic performances of the Nonetto and Quatuor from 1941 and 1957 combining them with a set of exquisite Villa-Lobos guitar works performed by the great masters Andrés Segovia, Julian Bream and Laurindo Almeida. The Magic Of
Alongside Scott Walker and Dusty Springfield, Jackie Trent was one of the most distinctive pop voices of the sixties. With Tony Hatch, she co-wrote hits for Walker and Petula Clark and enjoyed major success of her own when ‘Where Are You Now?’ ousted the Beatles’ ‘Ticket To Ride’ from the number one spot in the spring of 1965. Complimented by some memorable Hatch arrangements, the restored Magic of Jackie Trent and the superb material with which it has been augmented here are testament to her brilliant artistry.
