Féminin: The Complete 60s Recordings - Chantal Goya

Féminin: The Complete 60s Recordings
  • For the first time outside France, Féminin: The Complete ’60s Recordings collects the entire releases by Chantal Goya made in the Sixties, from 1964 to 1967.
  • Féminin: The Complete ’60s Recordings defines the upbeat, swinging sound of France’s’60s girl pop.
  • Now, she is known for her music for children, but in the Sixties she defined a new type of French girl singer - the yé-yé girl. She featured in Jean-Luc Godard’s 1966 film Masculin-Féminin as a pop star who might as well have been her.
  • Chantal Goya married songwriter Jean-Jacques Debout in 1966. The songs he wrote for her, like those he had composed for Charles Aznavour, Johnny Hallyday and Sylvie Vartan, were evocative, immediate and very French. Together, they defined the yé-yé sound.
  • Féminin: The Complete ’60s Recordings is the perfect complement to RPM Interntational’s France Gall and Sylvie Vartan collections: Made in France: France Gall’’s Baby Pop and Irrésistiblement.

Brer Soul
Released on 26/07/10. Amazing stuff! A mad mix of
insanity and wisdom, with enough violent clashes of culture to shake
anyone up. Funk, soul, poetry and righteousness blend into a great
batch of tracks! Includes groovy cuts like Lilly Done the Zampoughi , The Dozens and Sera Sera Jim . Crazy! (Dusty Groove) Never
before released on CD, this is the collectable debut album from
African-American Poet, musician, film director, screenwriter,
playwright, novelist, composer Melvin Van Peebles, recorded for A&M
Records in 1968. Titled after Van Peebles nickname, Brer Soul is an album of street jazz and social poetry, pre-empting Rap and Hip-Hop. Rap
has its roots in The Dozens, an African-American verbal game in which
each player had to top his opponent by issuing the most creative
insult.

Summer Sound Sensations: Definitive Collection
Released on 05/07/10. First Class were the brain child of John Carter (Ivy League/Flowerpot Men), and scored a massive international hit in 1974 with the single Beach Baby

Bob Stanley writes: “Beach Baby was possibly the fullest flowering of the John Carter Sound - constantly shape shifting, the harmonies, the strings, and more hooks than any four minute pop single should have by rights. John Peel raved about it in Sounds and it was no.4 in the US in the summer of 74. In Britain it stalled at 11 but felt much bigger- it’s been a radio staple since”

This studio group, including luminaries such as Tony Burrows, Chas Mills, Spencer James (from the Searchers), and Clare Torry (of Pink Floyd fame), released two LP’s and recorded tracks for a third that remained unreleased. All continued in the vein described above of hook laden /harmony driven /string backed perfectly produced pop. All recorded 1974 - 1977, plus a bonus track from 1985 when Carter recorded a throw back single for possible release in Holland when Beach Baby became a reissued hit, that totally captures the Beach Baby excitement and gives it the hi-production wall of sound.

Listen To The Flowers Grow
On the 40th Anniversary of the summer of love and flower power classic Lets Go To San Francisco we present the story behind the song and the group. An interesting story unfolds as the studio recordings of John Carter and team take on a life as a real band, which brought in a further crop of outstanding performers. We begin with the build up pre- …San Francisco songs by group members such as Neil Landon, John Carter, Russ Alquist , through the Rain Rain Rain recording which used the Mellotron to such great effect and prefaced its later use by Carter on the hit just a couple of months later, onto the hit, and the various attempts at a follow up using different artist names.

The subsequent live group was led by vocalist Tony Burrows, but at times included future Deep Purple members Jon Lord and Nick Simper in the backing band. Our sleeve notes have new interviews with most of the writers and artists involved talking of their experiences with the group. Previously unreleased tracks, alternate versions, original mono versions, tracks unreleased at the time , all combine to make this a collectors gem, and a totally worthy celebration of the 40th anniversary.

Knife In The Water O/S/T
Knife in the Water was Roman Polanski's first full-length feature,
the film with which he effectively announced his genius to
international cinema.
A middle class couple pick up a hitchhiker who turns their lives upside down in the course of one day. Here is a natural filmmaker making a stunning cinematic debut out of almost nothing.
It was first seen in the West at the Venice Film Festival,
where the International Federation of Film Critics gave it their
FIPRESCI award. Two years later it would be nominated for an Academy Award as Best Foreign Language Film.
The screenplay was by Polanski and Jerzy Skolimowski
It opened doors for Polanski in Western Europe and America that made his extraordinary career possible.
The music was written by the brilliant young Polish composer and pianist Krzysztof Komeda. It is arguably one of the most effective scores in cinema history; understated jazz that compliments the picture's sharp monochrome cinematography and the tense minimalism of the script and brings to the film another emotional dimension.
Also included here are three pieces composed and performed by Komeda for Andrzej Wajda's 1960 film The Innocent Sorcerers. Written by Skolimowski, this is a stylish, humorous film about Polish youth: their underground scene, girls, scooters, jazz etc. Both Komeda and Polanski appear on screen.
Komeda would go on to write three further film scores for Polanski; Rosemary's Baby, The Fearless Vampire Killers, Cul-de-sac. Overall Komeda wrote more than seventy soundtracks before his tragically early, somewhat mysterious death in 1969, at the age of just 38.
