Changes ~ The Story Of Beryl Marsden - Beryl Marsden

Changes ~ The Story Of Beryl Marsden
Beryl Marsden played a key part of the Merseybeat boom of the 1960s and yet amazingly this is her first-ever CD compilation. Changes celebrates her 50th year of performing with her entire recorded output. All of Beryl’s 1960s singles for Decca and Columbia are present, including her two duets with Peter Bardens / Tony Colton in the Shotgun Express, the hugely collectable Mod dancer ‘What She’s Got’ and an elusive live track from the rare Decca album At The Cavern.

Changes also boasts her obscure 1981 single ‘Hungry For You’ (produced by Pete Bardens) and some fascinating recent recordings, including a version of ‘I’ll Be There’, her performance of which closed the recent TV documentary on The Cavern. Beryl will be promoting Changes with a flurry of shows and interviews across 2012, including shows in both London and Liverpool.

"Liverpool was a hotbed of musical talent in the 1960’s and, with some justification, many veteran scousers reckon that the city’s best female singer was not Cilla black but Beryl Marsden". Music Week, April 2012

Dig The Buzz

Well known now for his classic run of singles released on Immediate in the late 60's ,Farlow (the 'e' on the end came later) already had a strong reputation as an outstanding vocalist before he signed with Loog Oldham.

A regular on the Riki Tik circuit of venues Farlow performed US styled R 'N B material, he then recorded for Rik Gunnell Productions who leased the masters to EMI Columbia. On this compilation RPM presents all the recordings made for Rik Gunnell plus the previous Decca EP and single Farlow made in1962 whilst resident at the legendary Flamingo Club. Throughout all this period Farlow was backed by the Thunderbirds , comprising Albert Lee (gtr) , Dave Greenslade (org) Bruce Waddell (bs) Ian mague (drms) .

Our compilation title Dig The Buzz is taken from Farlow’s debut album 'Buzz with the Fuzz', a storming R 'N B album including the title track which is something of a Mod anthem.

Bluebell Wood
Big Sleep were a Welsh band whose influence was far beyond their sole album offering released in 1971. The band members (formerly with Eyes of Blue) would all soon head for greater things in bands such as Gentle Giant, Man and Wild Turkey (formed by ex-Jethro Tull bassist Glenn Cornick). An album that features many fine songs and styles, "Bluebell Wood", (originally released on the highly collectable Pegasus label), has been sought after by collectors for many years thanks to its influence and place in the history of British progressive rock and in the annals of Welsh rock. Re-mastered from the original master tapes, "Bluebell Wood" has never sounded so good. This release is sure to appeal to followers of Man and Gentle Giant in particular. The First ever- official CD release for this classic album - now 24-bit re-mastered. Our Price: £10.95

Lost Soul Singles & Demos 1966-1967 + Bonus LP 1974
LOST SOUL is a package to draw in and collect together previously lost and loose elements from the career of british blue eyed soul singer/songwriter Jackie Lomax.Jackie Lomax was the lead vocalist and bass player with The Undertakers, a stomping Merseybeat outfit of the mid 1960's. At the end of 1965 Jackie joined an Anglo American line-up playing R&Bcalled The Lost Souls, with a name change in 1966 to Lomax Alliance.Brian Epstein came to New York and offered to manage Jackie Lomax as a solo artist but ended up signing the band. Tracks were recorded in New York and London for a single and an album, produced by John Simon. Only the single got released in the Uk, and a different single under a different name in the US , Epsteins death curtailing further action for the band, but Lomax squeezed out a further solo single.Lomax continued his Beatle associations through signing as a writer / artist to Apple in 1968. Following several releases Lomax recorded with blues outfit Heavy Jelly in 1970, then released two solo albums through Warners upon a return to the US.At the end of 1973, Jackie Lomax joined Badger, a previously prog rock band originally formed by ex-Yes keyboard player Tony Kaye, and proceeded to turn them into his type of R&B/soul band. The band became a vehicle for his songs and singing and they released one excellent LP, White Lady, in 1974. In more recent times Lomax has kept busy as a singer and guitarist for hire.

Brother
Out of print since Apple Records suspended operations in 1975, Brother, the 1972 Apple album by Lon and Derrek Van Eaton is being released on CD for the first time ever by RPM Records on June 25th. Signed to Apple after John Lennon and George Harrison heard the tape that the duo (formerly of the late 60s American group Jacob’s Creek) had sent to the Apple office, Lon and Derrek were brought over to London to be the first act to record an album in the newly built Apple Studios.

Produced by Klaus Voormann, Brother is an eclectic set of songs that encompass a wide range of styles that range from rock and R&B to folk and even an early nod towards rustic Americana. The centerpiece of the album is the single, ‘Sweet Music,’ which was produced by George Harrison at Abbey Road and which features Harrison, Ringo Starr, Mike Hugg of Manfred Mann and several others backing Lon and Derrek on a track that sounds nothing less (and understandably so) than a great lost Harrison song from the early seventies.

Freshly remastered at Abbey Road and featuring extensive liner notes from Stefan Granados as well as copious bonus tracks (including their legendary collaboration with Sir John Tavener), Brother is – to borrow a phrase or two from the review by Stephen Holden that appeared in Rolling Stone, a "staggeringly impressive first album” that "displays more energy, good feeling and sheer musical talent that any debut rock record I’ve heard this year.”
It may be forty years on, but Brother sounds as fresh and exciting today as it did in 1972, which is not a quality that can be taken for granted with many albums from the early seventies.

PRESS:

"…it is an album that has survived the passing of nearly 40 years very well. Stylistically encompassing pop, rock and R&B, Brother is never less than impressive…” – Alan Jones, Music Week, 29/6/2012

"What strikes you most about the brothers' sound is their sweet, high vocals which soar above their otherwise soft-rock arrangements." - John Blaney, Shindig! Magazine, Issue 28, 2012
