Beggin - The Sound Of Londons Mod/Club Scene - Timebox

Beggin - The Sound Of Londons Mod/Club Scene
Members of Timebox went on to high profile music careers (with Patto, Babe Ruth, the Rutles, amongst many). Our contention here is that Timebox themselves were a vital act in their own right. Essentially intelligent, genre-bending late 60s British pop laced with a surreal sense of humour and regular flashes of maverick unpredictability.

Mod Jazz/ Pop outings and blue eyed soul populate the first half of our complete overview, with psychedelic nuggets and blasts of proto-hard rock (plus a few that defy categorisation) inflecting the second and all recorded within a two year span, with much of it unreleased at the time. They worked the clubs, moved with the times, and left a fascinating body of work for any 60's fan.

End Of The World
End Of The World by Greek Psych / Prog legends Aphrodite's Child. Formed in 1967 by keyboard player VANGELIS, the band also featured Demis Roussos on bass and vocals and Lucas Sideras on Drums. Their classic debut album was released in 1968 and featured the international hit Rain and Tears , partially inspired by Procol Harum's A Whiter Shade of Pale. However, the album revealed a more experimental side to the Band's nature with such Psychedelic gems as The Grass is No Green, You Always Stand in My Way and Day of the Fool. This Esoteric Recordings reissue has been re-mastered from the original tapes and includes both sides of Aphrodite's Child's first single as bonus tracks. Our Price: £10.95

Let’s Live For Today: The Rokes In English 1966-68
The Rokes were Brits who went to Italy in 1963 and became one of the biggest bands in the land for the rest of the decade. They chalked up numerous Italian language hits and recorded four albums as well as becoming an enormous live draw and TV favourites. However, scattered across those albums were a number of English language songs that somehow came off sounding like a Euro-tinged blend of The Beatles, Hollies, Kinks and Pretty Things. In ’67, The Rokes released the first English language version of ‘Let’s Live For Today’, a song they’d already cut in Italian. It went on to become a huge US hit in the hands of The Grass Roots and was covered by scores of bands. Rollicking beat gems like ‘No No No’ and ‘Ride On’ slowly morphed into more sophisticated fayre such as the sitar-drenched ‘Ripe Apples’ and the sinister psychedelic rocker ‘When The Wind Arises’, both of which were released in the UK in a belated attempt to break them here. Here, for the first time on CD, are virtually all of The Rokes’ English language recordings from 1966 to 1968. Our Price: £9.95

The Complete Warner Bros. & Valiant Singles Collection
The Association were simply one of the finest, most beloved, and most commercially successful American vocal groups of the 1960s. Yet a complete singles collection of their golden Warner Bros. & Valiant years (1966-1971) has never been collected. UNTIL NOW! Although the popular six-man band initially developed a straight-laced, M.O.R. image, they were actually much more dynamic than that.

They helped pioneer the new musical genre dubbed "folk-rock” by Troubadour owner Doug Weston and fused this sound with a sophisticated vocal blend that was on par with The Beach Boys. And contrary to their hop-sack-suited image, they were all spiritual seekers, with one member, Jules Alexander, leaving the band for a pilgrimage to India nearly a year before The Beatles.

The deluxe, double Digipak includes a full-colour booklet with previously unpublished photos, and extensive liner notes featuring track-by-track commentary from original band members Terry Kirkman, Russ Giguere, Larry Ramos, Jules Alexander, Ted Bluechel Jr., and Jim Yester; as well as songwriters P.F. Sloan, Ruthann Friedman, Tandyn Almer, and Dick Addrisi; and producers Bones Howe, Jerry Yester, and others!

"Six varied and characterful voices, six writers, six musicians, they created some of the very best pop ever recorded". 5* (Kingsley Abbott - Record Collector August 2012)
"A slick sunshine pop/folk rock band which had a great deal of success in its native America in the second half of the 1960's, The Association are given the deluxe, double digipack treatment by Now Sounds on a delightful release compiled and curated by St. Etienne's Bob Stanley". (PF Sloan, Music Week, 08/06/2012)
