Piece Of Her Heart – The Epic And Shout Years
When Piece of My Heart reached the US top 20 in 1968, the pop music
world was largely unaware that Janis Joplin’sgritty vocal was but an
echo of the emotive original by Erma Franklin, on Bert Berns Shout
label, from the R&Btop 10 of a year earlier. Erma was the eldest
sibling in the Franklin family, senior to Aretha and Carolyn, and like
the former was signed to Columbia Records in the early 1960 s, producing
a number of high quality singles and an album on the Epic label. She
then pacted with Shout Records in New York in 1967 to cut four singles
of bluesy soul gems, moving to Brunswick in 1969 following the death of
Berns.Shout Records UK is delighted to bring together for the
first time a comprehensive collection of all tracks released on both
Epic and Shout (US) labels, reflecting the full range of Erma smusical
talent in this fine showcase of soul and blues repertoire, also blessed
with a hint of jazz styling.

Bells A Poppin’
Ms. Bell has a very distinctive vocal sound, and
many will have recognised the singing be it knocking out hits for Blue
Mink, adverts for Big Mac, Wonderfuel Gas, Brooke Bond ‘D’, or via an
ipod full of BV sessions. It’s a Soul sound that found origins in a
touring gospel spectacular that arrived in Britain from the US in the
early 60’s. When the tour finished and the party returned to the States,
Ms Bell remained to forge her Pop/Soul career in the UK. Initially
signed to EMI’s HMV label, Bell really blossomed when she moved to
Phillips in 1965.Here she was often backed by the coterie of
singers that provided a backbone to the pop industry at the time,
including Lesley Duncan, Doris Troy, Sunny, Rosetta Hightower and Bell’s
long time close friend, Dusty Springfield (repaying the sterling work
Bell did backing Springfield’s own recordings). Three albums and many
singles were the result, each standing the test of time in what many
consider to be her greatest recordings.RPM present the first LP
“Bells A Poppin’”, originally released in 1967, along with the singles
that preceded it. Highlights include the gospelly “I Really Got Carried
Away”, co-written by Bell and Doris Troy; Cissy Houston’s “Don’t Come
Running To Me”; the long time Northern Soul dancer favourite “Picture Me
Gone” – all of which is wrapped up with a detailed story by Bob
Stanley.
