When Sex Leers Its Inquisitive Head - Peter Wyngarde

When Sex Leers Its Inquisitive Head
Released on 07/09/09. Peter Wyngarde’s masterful portrayal of the TV sleuth/crime-writing sex monster JASON KING was created for ITC’s Department S show in 1968, resplendent in a collar-and-tie of raw pink silk, and a suit that made heads turn round! When it came to the obligatory spin-off album however, nothing you d heard before could possibly have prepared you for Wyngarde’s1970 vinyl love-letter. A collection of contemporary standards it most certainly was not. The album included songs which exploded into rampant rages of male sexuality, couched in an aesthetic abandon that set off alarm bells even in those permissive times. The record's outrageousness often overwhelms what would still be one of the more bizarre episodes in popular music.

The Shacklefords Sing
Released 24/11/08. This phenomenon probably should be filed under forgotten enigmas of the '60s. The crudely rendered Lichtensteinesque comic strip on the album cover tries to help out by explaining that The Shacklefords consist of three men and a girl, they like to be perceived as a sound rather than a group, and they don't want to be confused with Norwegian fjords. Right. OK. The Shacklefords are kind of like The Art of Noise avant la lettre; there's a mystifying aura regarding the lineup of the band, and exactly what it's all about. Perhaps The Shacklefords would have remained forgotten if it hadn't been for the renewed appreciation of their producer, the amazing Lee Hazlewood. Helmed by Hazlewood's associate, the prolific Marty Cooper (an American pop missing link involved with everyone from Jennifer Warnes to Them!), The Shacklefords sounds is a missing link in American vocal groups. These "adventures in song with Capitol's super singing group," thankfully offer more than just another rarity for Hazlewood addicts. The marvelous Shacklefords sound is a treat for collectors of the unknown and the under-appreciated. A treat for fans of 1960's vocal groups, and a key piece in the legend and enigma of Lee Hazlewood. Our Price: £9.95
