Tomorrow Today - Hardin and York

Tomorrow Today
During the heady days of 1969 the ubermusos such as Keith Emerson and Steve Howe were flexing their dextrous fingers to “boldly go, onwards and upwards, where no rock had gone before”. Prog was born.Within this scene a duo developed their act from the embers of the Spencer Davis Group, where they’d had their own spot during the middle of shows, and finally left to go it on their own. Multi Keyboardist and contemporary of Keith Emerson, Eddie Hardin had gelled with Jazz drummer turned R&B for the sake of the SDG, Pete York to form the world’s smallest big band.Like contemporaries Colosseum, Hardin & York’s jazz inflected prog met with huge critical and commercial favour on mainland Europe, especially Germany where they regularly sold out 15,000 seater venues. Their lasting effect there means that they are still able to draw an audience today when playing periodical tours.Their debut LP ‘Tomorrow Today’ was so ‘out there’ its front cover design won prestigious art awards in New York. The cover artist obviously so pleased with himself he omitted to put the music artists name on the front!Reviewers called it a “cross between Procul Harum and Traffic”, to which we would add The Nice. Released on the decidedly un prog like Bell label it did nothing in the UK but charted in Europe.Although they set out to wholly rely on their own keyboard/drums virtuosity, whilst recording at Olympic Studios the duo were joined by Herbie Flowers (in a next door studio helping Bowie with Space Oddity) and backing singers Sue and Sunny, fresh from backing Joe Cocker. Our reissue, presented in a digi pack, is augmented by four unreleased tracks from the album sessions at Olympic Studios in 1969.

Wheatfield Soul / Share The Land / Canned Wheat
Wheatfield Soul became a collector's item over the years. The hit These Eyes has the authority that the band repeated on chart songs down the line. What make Wheatfield Soul so sought after is inventive themes that found their way onto later albums. These Eyes remains timeless; it is the song that stands out as the masterpiece on this creative album.

1969's cleverly titled Canned Wheat introduced several of the bands most remembered songs and still sounds incredibly fresh, a product from the days of classic rock. Burt Cummings great rock & Roll voice keeps the most overdone Song fresh and Randy Bachman's underrated guitar work always serving the song' s needs.

Recorded in the aftermath of Randy Bachman's departure, Share The Land was a better album than anyone expected. It was the biggest selling original album in their career. Burton Cummings is in excellent voice and the new double lead guitar team of Kurt Winter and Greg Leskiw gave the band a greater range than they had before. The original album includes two numbers from earlier sessions, Palmyra and The Answer , featuring Randy Bachman on guitar.

Home Is Where You Find It
Following time in the Spencer Davis Group during the late 60’s, Eddie Hardin then formed a successful duo Hardin and York with former SDG drummer Pete York. Four albums and major success in Germany later, Hardin then released his debut solo album Home Is Where You Find It on Decca in 1972.

Leading up to this point Hardin had also been writing and producing recording with Ray Fenwick, for their own production company and leasing THE RESULTS TO Decca. One such result being the TV theme to childrens show Magpie, which they credited to a made up name The Murgatroyd Band.

RPM have been able to add a couple of onus tracks from Hardin & Fenwick production stable of the period. Namely single they recorded together in ’72 as JAKE, and a second version of the album title track recorded with heart melting vocals from Vicky Brown and Margot Newman.

For the Hardin album they captured a big sound at Olympic studios with full orchestration arranged by Phil Denys. On the band side Hardin was accompanied by a stellar cast; Pete York, Tony Newman, Ian Paice, Dee Murray, Ray Fenwick.

This debut solo album has never been on CD, and never been reissued. It is an interesting collection of personal songs with Hardin in more reflective mood than he was in the Hammond grooving SDG or jazz rock Hardin & York, and with its piano driven basis more akin to Mike d’Abo at the time.
