Bells A Poppin’ - Madeline Bell

Bells A Poppin’
Ms. Bell has a very distinctive vocal sound, and
many will have recognised the singing be it knocking out hits for Blue
Mink, adverts for Big Mac, Wonderfuel Gas, Brooke Bond ‘D’, or via an
ipod full of BV sessions. It’s a Soul sound that found origins in a
touring gospel spectacular that arrived in Britain from the US in the
early 60’s. When the tour finished and the party returned to the States,
Ms Bell remained to forge her Pop/Soul career in the UK. Initially
signed to EMI’s HMV label, Bell really blossomed when she moved to
Phillips in 1965.Here she was often backed by the coterie of
singers that provided a backbone to the pop industry at the time,
including Lesley Duncan, Doris Troy, Sunny, Rosetta Hightower and Bell’s
long time close friend, Dusty Springfield (repaying the sterling work
Bell did backing Springfield’s own recordings). Three albums and many
singles were the result, each standing the test of time in what many
consider to be her greatest recordings.RPM present the first LP
“Bells A Poppin’”, originally released in 1967, along with the singles
that preceded it. Highlights include the gospelly “I Really Got Carried
Away”, co-written by Bell and Doris Troy; Cissy Houston’s “Don’t Come
Running To Me”; the long time Northern Soul dancer favourite “Picture Me
Gone” – all of which is wrapped up with a detailed story by Bob
Stanley.

Nona Hendryx

Released on 27/09/10. Nona Hendryx was one third of the pop/soul act LaBelle, and by far and away made the hippest solo records of any of the other members of the group, Patti LaBelle and Sarah Dash.

After LaBelle called it quits in 1976. Hendryx released her self-titled debut record, which was an amazingly strong amalgam of soul and hard rock.

Wearing skin tight pants, black leather and brandishing a Bowie knife on the LP cover she announced her intentions loud and clear but neither record company or radio at that time knew what to do with this African American woman with a huge voice comfortable and capable of singing hard rock as well as soul music.

Nona worked with Talking Heads as back-up singer and fell in with a hip crowd of musicians and her association with David Byrne led to her working with Bill Laswell who helped her put together her second solo album. Entitled NONA it sparked greater interest in Nona s considerable talents and her solo career flourished.
