Dream Babes Vol. 8 - Stockingtop Pop rpm329 |
Our latest collection is a follow on from Vol.7's Beat Chic which leaves the kinky booted girls in '66 to turn into up tempo brassy birds of '67-70. Lots of curios for collectors to get their teeth into including: TV and Radio personality Gloria Hunniford's first record, written and produced by Alan Hawkshaw; actress and comedienne Faith Brown with her first solo disc produced by Kenny Young successfully cloning his Clodagh sound; one of the first singles by later disco diva Tina Charles, produced by Valerie Avon, Bo Bo's Party which still goes down well in clubs today and a killer from The Chanters with their alter ego Birds Of A Feather and then there's the wonderfully named Stockingtops, aka Sue and Sunny. Plenty never on CD, many previously 'un-comped'. Volume 8 sure is a welcome continuation in the popular Brit Girl series "Dream Babes". Dream Babes Vol. 5 - Folkrock & Faithfull rpm272 |
Continuing the series that focuses on british female recordings of the sixties. The rise of folk rock in the mid 60's, together with that of the singer/songwriter troubador, are the backdrop and theme to this new edition of the Dream Babes series. The arrival in '65 of Marianne Faithfull encouraged many producers to push forward their own wistful and innocent proteges. Examples abound here, such as Trisha with a Donovan song, and include Faithfull's guitarist of the time Caroline Carter. The latter a Tony Calder Production (at times Andrew Loog Oldhams business partner) , with another example being Phillipa Lewis on a number written and musically directed by Jimmy Page (one of four tracks on this album that Page had a hand in). Not all were in the Faithfull field and Page's work in London with beau Jackie De Shannon yielded some cracking Folkrock gems such as De Shannons own Don't Turn Your Back On Me. An immediate successor to Faithfull , but who later found her own niche , is Vashti . Her recordings with Loog Oldham, appearance in the cult film Tonite Lets All Make Love in London, and classic album ' Just Another Diamond Day ' are some examples. The two tracks here are from '66 after she'd come down from Oxford where she had been part of an art and music scene with Jennifer Lewis & Angela Strange. This circle also included Michael Palin. More of this great interweaving story and history is to be found on the essay written by Bob Stanley for the album . With unreleased tracks and first time reissues this album not only sounds good but contains many rarities as well. A perfect addition to the series! Dream Babes Vol. 3 - Backcomb'n'Beat rpm233 |
The Dream team return with Volume three of this developing series. 22 Brit Girl Classic From The 60's. Bob Stanley, Kieron Tyler and Mark Stratford bring you a slightly different slant on the Brit Girl scene following the first two volumes that concentrated on the EMI vaults, we now look at recordings made during the 60's by independent producers. Most of the recordings were subsequently leased for release through the major labels like Columbia but their origins were all through independent writers/producers/studios. As such we have recordings produced by Shel Talmy, Joe Meek, Giorgio Gomelsky, Tommy Scott, John Carter, Mark Wirtz, Miki Dallon and Pierre Tubbs. Artist wise, as before we have the famous and the not so famous, together making up a fascinating package that cuts across out and out go-go beat, stomping northern soul and finishes with the more orchestrated folk rock.
