Duffy Power : Vampers And Champers
Vampers And Champers
rpmd320

A protégé of the Larry Parnes rock'n'roll stable of artists in the late 1950's, Duffy broke free and discovered his own voice in the early 1960's. Embracing the jazz and blues scene of early 60's UK, Duffy recorded some highly prized singles for Parlophone, backed by the Graham Bond Quartet. All are collected together, with his other sessions from1962-1966 period, plus the 1967 one off EMI single, on Leapers and Sleepers (RPMD 240).

Vampers and Champers is part two of this Anthology, which collects together the recordings from the rest of 1966 through to 1971, selected by Duffy as the most representative sounds of his art. After the EMI/Parlophone deal Duffy recorded many sessions, for himself, also for Alexis Korner, and played live with Alexis Korner. Years later a number of these sessions were rounded up for compilation releases, but it wasn't until 1972 that Duffy finally achieved a complete and dedicated album released with the eponymous LP produced by Adrian Millar, released by GSF. (This will be reissued separately plus bonus tracks next spring on RPM). On Disc One of Vampers and Champers we present the 1966 sessions with Danny Thompson and John McLaughlin, plus two previously unreleased songs.

Disc Two has the 1969 sessions (later released by the Spark label), a previously unreleased 1970 session backed by the Keith Tippett Sextet, and a pick from the aborted CBS LP project. Finally as a bonus we have four previously unreleased tracks from the 90's and Duffy today. These are especially enticing , with Duffy's haunting vocals over stripped down backing, such as just the Harmonium on The Fool, and the sax of Dick Heckstall Smith on the sublime Spaces. The final two tracks are from a new album in progress, with the last a light rockabilly number that brings Duffy full circle on his musical journey. The second part of Duffy's story is told in an essay by noted music journalist and author of the Bert Jansch biography (in which Duffy has a part), Colin Harper.

Duffy Power : Leapers And Sleepers
Leapers And Sleepers

Duffy began his music career as one of the famous Larry Parnes rock'n'roll stable of artists during the 1950's. Upon discovering the Blues at the turn of the decade Duffy left Larry Parnes, got a new deal with Parlophone and hooked up with R&B organist Graham Bond. The following years saw Duffy move in the same club circles as many R&B and Folk Blues artists such as Alexis Korner, Georgie Fame, Davey Graham, Bert Jansch.

Today Duffy is still held in high regard as a pioneer folk blues performer, as a singer, harmonica player, songwriter. An article all about his BBC radio recordings was published two months ago in Record Collector, a collection of them has just been issued by HUX, and Duffy is mentioned all the way through the recent Bert Jansch biography.

Duffys R&B archive is presented across 2 CDs ; Disc One is Duffy from 1962-1964, his first session for Parlophone, singles and unreleased session recordings backed by Graham Bond, then backed by R&B group the Paramounts, followed by the Fentones with drummer Ginger Baker. It has all his sought after Parlophone singles, unreleased sessions and the first version of I Saw Here Standing There which was rejected by the Beatles because it was "too jazzy".

Disc two are the recordings made during 1965-1967, sessions on which Duffy is largely backed by John McLaughlin, Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, and consists of two singles and the rest being the then unreleased sessions.

Duffy Power : Duffy

60's blues fusion musician, writer and singer Duffy Power finally achieved a stand alone LP release in 1973 when an eponymous album hit the racks on the GSF label.

Produced by Adrian Millar, as one of several on going projects in a Production deal set up with partner Andrew Loog Oldham, the Duffy Power LP became to date the only purpose recorded album Duffy has had released in his career.

For this fine collection of Duffy originals Millar brought in a stellar cast of musicians, plus backing singers Dana Gillespie, Pam McKenna, Alexis Korner, and Del Newman for string arrangements, to help bring the songs to life.

The album was well received and Millar continued to be a fan of Duffy's songs, offering a second LP. Sessions were begun with a regular backing band called CWT ( see also the RATS (RPM 322) where they backed singer / songwriter David Kubinec). Sadly only three tracks survive today as yet again another Duffy album project remained on the shelf.

As a follow up to the two successful Anthologies of Duffy's 60's recordings RPM is proud to make available again for the first time in 30 years, and for the first time on CD, the 1973 LP Duffy Power, plus the three recordings from the aborted follow up album. The package includes very personal song by song annotation from Duffy, and more unseen photos from Duffy's archive.
