This second installment of Rev-Ola's "Phantom Jukebox" compendiums focuses on the progressive Los Angeles-based White Whale Records label. White Whale Records was formed in the summer of 1965, and their first single release was the Turtles' massive hit, "It Ain't Me, Babe." By 1971 due to various reasons White Whale was.... beached. However, in its mid-sixties heyday, White Whale made a strong impact as an indie, with hits from such disparate artists as The Clique, Nino and April, Lyme and Cybelle (featuring a young Warren Zevon), and their most successful act, the Turtles. Features rare photos and exclusive interviews with several of the original artists! Most of the 24 tracks on this collection make their debut here on CD! This has never before been releases on CD and has been remastered in the usual state of the art Rev-Ola style and comes with lavish booklet with photos and interviews. Among the many highlights on this collection are: A previously-unreleased-on-CD song written by the late Warren Zevon ("The Girl's Alright" by The Brothers). Two long lost Curt Boettcher-produced Lyme and Cybelle tunes, featuring Warren Zevon. Keith Colley's "Enamorado" featuring members of the Millennium on backing vocal harmonies. A long lost Paul Williams-penned track (The Hangtown Fry)! Another must for fans of West Coast classic pop...folkrock....latin pop....and just cool music! |

In that cool dark age hiatus between the pro-hepcats of Swing and the burgeoning DIY raucousness of Rock 'N' Roll lies an all-but lost time when big band veterans such as Johnny Hodges and Tab Smith rubbed shoulders in the R&B charts with real wild childs like Big Jay McNeely and Little Walter, rollerskating to gigs, wearing lurex turbans, taking over radio shows, blowing sax from the stage, down the street and back again, a screamin' and rockin' out Harlem and Central Avenue, all vying to grab that magical jukebox coin and launch a veritable ZOOT SUIT RIOT!"The era of the tenor sax" is how Duke Ellington described the post-war slump that saw the decline of the big swing bands and the rise of the lone saxophone star. The sound of the saxophone became the sound of 1940s jazz and jump blues - these small combos were not, however, any kind of throwback to tame mainstream Trad Jazz, a full on extravaganza of R&B showbiz, as the likes of Roy Milton and Lynn Hope throw themselves around the clubs of New York City and LA's Central Avenue, igniting a spontaneous psychotic reaction in young Blacks and Latinos that was wilder than and prefigured Rock'n'Roll. For the first time ever, Rev-Ola Records present a CD collection of this amazing period in Jazz and R&B history! Featuring six number ones as well as all the top tenor smash hits and packaged with extensive liner notes from 50s expert Dave Penny, this is the ultimate zoot suit riot! |

Well, here we are again in our series of pre-1960's CLASSIC music....you've had Elvis, Bill Haley and Martin Denny.....well, here is a newie....in the style of our Phantom Jukebox series.....27, yep, 27 CHART BUSTING slabs of Doo-Wop.....from Tin Pan Alley wannabes to blues/gospel moans from the void to the founding classics of Rock'n'Roll..... The early 1950s was an exciting time in the history of African American music. According to the history books, rock 'n' roll had not yet been invented, so the music continued to flourish in all but name, leading up to the big bang at mid decade. One of the hottest sparks to fuel the rock 'n' roll fire was vocal group harmony, which had become popular in the 1930s and 1940s with groups such as the Ink Spots and the Mills Brothers and by the early 1950s had been boosted by the popularity of more modern acts like The Orioles and The Ravens. This, the second of two volumes, spotlights the Billboard R&B chart hits of the vocal harmony groups that had the greatest influence on the burgeoning rock 'n' roll scene, including important names like The Drifters, The Midnighters and The Five Keys. The sound of the city...the sound which fills Mean Streets, Goodfellas, and The Sopranos....as soon as you put this CD on.....you'll swear you know them all...and maybe you do! |

Somewhere between the explosion of Elvis and the young Andrew Loog Oldham's disappointment at the UK tour by Bill Haley and The Comets came a uniquely British reaction which had been to be honest evilly brewing for a while in the most unlikely Jazz circles. So a disparate crew of ex-jazzers, crazies, showbiz stalwarts and Soho skiffle kids thought that they too could Rock'n'Roll! And why not? Soon enough and hot on the heels a technicolour 3D Expresso Bongo world of 2 i's, Six-Five Specials and Oh Boys would spring from the brow of Jack Good abd his cohorts...meanwhile, go back with us to the Year(s) Zero of an artform which would take over the world. British Rock'n'Roll (and see if you too can spot that Lady Madonna in the Bad Penny Blues courtesy of a young Joe Meek!) |
