When Phil Swern, ace London promo guru for the famed A&M records was told by DJ Emperor Rosko of a hot oldies track which was wowing the dancers at his gigs, his ears perked up and before you could say Martha & The Vandellas Phil had two ace female session vocalists and former solo stars in the studio cutting a new version in keeping with the updating of 1950s and early 1960s nostalgia which was all the rage in the 1970s.Everything from Wizzard's hits to The Carpenters 'Now And Then' album, Phil went on to cut a whole bunch more hits with the girls, both early 60s Spector-esque covers and new and sympathetic originals by Phil and his cohorts. Here we have for the first time on CD, the best of The Pearls, featuring ALL of their Top 10 UK and European hits including "Guilty" and "Wizard Of Love", as well as a couple of rarities including the beautiful update of "A Lovers' Concerto" - an unreleased production which could have been yet another HIT! |
