The Man They Couldn't Silence - Paul Robeson

The Man They Couldn't Silence
Paul Robeson: great voice, grannies favourite, acclaimed Shakespearean actor, perhaps the most beloved man in Wales? Or perhaps a subversive, dangerous, maybe commie-agitator plotting sedition against the United States Government and everything they held dear? In fact he was both yet neither! One of the voices of the century, Robeson from youth spoke out against racism and social injustice, to the extent he became politically suspect and pretty much unemployable in the US. Coming to Britain he not only starred in one of the earliest Hammer Films (produced by his friend, the Spanish left/liberal film maker Enrique Carreras, whose son was to make Hammer world famous) but also was one of the original talkie stars of Ealing studios. Back then, a rather leftist organisation whose major ideological guiding light was Pen Tennyson, whose tragic early death rocked the UK film industry. Here he made films much to his taste, glorifying working class communities, inevitably set in Wales, the country where Robeson could do no wrong. So two iconic British studios were pretty much launched by the man! So here is a taste of the voice of the 20th century, the man they couldn't silence: Paul Roobeson! Beautiful. This is a must for all lovers of a great voice and for those concerned with social justice.

40th Anniversary: Keep On Running
To celebrate 40 years in the music business Cherry Red are proud to present a 40th Anniversary ‘Best Of’ of the Spencer Davis Group.

Releasing their first single Dimples in early 1964, there followed a string of major hits in the UK, US and Europe. This compilation presents the key songs from the peak period of the Group such as Every Little Bit Hurts, Keep On Running, Gimme Some Lovin’, I’m A Man, Time Selle , Mr Second Class. All recordings were made between 1965-1974, and feature Steve Winwood, Muff Winwood, Spencer Davis, Pete York, Eddie Hardin, Ray Fenwick.

The Group’s take on US R&B plus their own original songs in the R&B idiom, and the strength of their live performances, were a major influence on many music fans in the 60’s. Legendary producer Joe Boyd (Pink Floyd, Fairport Convention) was recently quoted as saying that when he came to the UK from America, the first live show he attended was an SDG concert and it created such an impact he sought to find a way into the music business from that point.

Thus we have compiled an album using versions of the key songs that best show off the Group’s dynamic R&B performances at the time . To enhance this celebration the accompanying booklet includes many archive photos .

CONTRABAND, the eponymous album from six of Scotland's finest musicians. Heavily influenced by Fairport Convention, this classic folk-rock album is one of Scotland's best kept secrets and stands up well to comparisions with Steeleye Span, Pentangle and Fairport themselves.

Originally released on Transatlantic in 1974, the album features traditional folk songs, contemporary ballads and self-penned tracks in an up-tempo folk-rock style.

Featuring the superb vocal talents of Mae McKenna who went on to have an extensive solo career as well as providing backing vocals to everyone from Pete Townshend to Kylie.

Multi-instrumentalist brothers Billy and George Jackson along with fiddle player John Martin formed the legendary Ossian. Members of Contraband later joined Easy Club, Isla and Gryphon.

"…if you haven’t heard it before it’s a glorious step back into the past.”
