Come My Way - Marianne Faithfull

Come My Way
Well, what can one say about Marianne Faithfull that hasn't been written a million times before? A true legend in British music, boasting a career that spans more than forty years that is showing no sign of slowing down yet. Over the course of a dozen or so albums and any number of hit singles she's consistently re-invented herself; from the teenage convent schoolgirl folk-pop of her early Decca recordings (penned by Jagger/Richards, Donovan, Tim Hardin, Jackie De Shannon, Bert Jansch et al) through the controversial years of "Sister Morphine", Girl On A Motorcycle and her well-publicised late '60s drug-induced breakdown to her rebirth in the late-'70s with the manifesto that is Broken English and subsequent acceptance into the pantheon of great rock and roll survivors. Not to mention the fact that she now sounds better than ever and puts on one hell of a good show! In a classic spin by her manager/mentor Andrew Loog Oldham, Faithfull's first two long players were released on the same day in April 1965. While Marianne Faithfull was full of the kind of fragile, baroque torch-pop with which she'd become successfully associated, it's the sister release Come My Way that was effectively a pure folk album with shades of children's songs and a sense of the avant garde. Magnificent!

Psychedelic India

If the Sixties was the period when the West's fascination with Indian music and culture blossomed to its fullest extent, then the seeds of that fascination were planted in the previous decade with the release - in both Britain and the United States - of the formative albums by the great emissaries of Indian music, Ali Akbar Khan and Ravi Shankar. Ali Akbar Khan was, and remains, the master of the sarod a 25- stringed instrument of the lute family who, beginning at the age of three, was taught by his father over a period of some 20 years. Among his father s fellow students at one point was the 18-yearold sitar player Ravi Shankar, with whom Ali Akbar came to share a lifelong devotion to teaching and performance around the world, even into his eighties.

As young men, the two learned together like brothers, inspiring each other to greater heights, the celebration of which manifests itself in such jugalbandis (musical duos) as the electrifying performances that are the centrepiece of this edition. Hindustani classical singer Ustad Amir Khan was one of the greatest musicians India has produced. His sublime Raga Marwa (featured here) was described by Ravi Shankar as one of the four or five immortal recordings of the entire world. Half a century has elapsed since these recordings were made, yet the passage of time has done nothing to dim their transcendent beauty. You won t encounter the formal trappings of Western psychedelia but this is music that will transport and elevate and enrich the listener.

I Ran - The Best Of

Missing ] on field starting at 850

Inspired by the likes of My Bloody Valentine and Ride, Chapterhouse were part of the short-lived 'shoe-gazing' scene of the early 90's, but unlike other acts who acquired a set of guitar pedals and headed off to the nearest recording studio, they mixed beats with their wall-of-sonic-guitar-fuzz to create records to stimulate both mind and feet! Newly expanded reissue of their classic debut 'Whirpool', now with all the b-sides from the singles 'Pearl', 'Falling Down' and the 'Sunburst EP'. Produced by the band along side Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins), John Fryer (This Mortal Coil), Stephen Hague (New Order) and Ralph Jezzard, and featuring guest vocals from Rachel Goswell (Slowdive), with liner notes from music journalist and long-time associate Andrew Perry, along with the lyrics in full [documented here for the first time), photos, memorabilia and other clippings from the bands personal archive, and images of all of the releases featured on the album. Long deleted, original CDs of the album sell for £25+ on internet auction websites.
