The Ark - Chad & Jeremy

The Ark
Released 27/04/09. After our proud release of Chad & Jeremy's "Of Cabbages And Kings", we now present their followup, "The Ark". Put together by the same Gary Usher-helmed team with the same sumptuous results, this is an amazing album. Little were Chad and Jeremy to know it would be their swansong as 1960s recording artists...they should have stuck with it! With songs informed by their own personal Brit oddyssey through 1960s California and their support for RFK's presidential campaign, this is a very fitting addition to the great run of Psychpop we've had lately...and one of the best!

Flying Lizards / Fourth Wall
A welcome reissue of the two key Flying Lizards albums, innovative Pop Electronica from the early 1980’s Founded in 1978 by avant-garde composer and producer David Cunningham as an experimental pop band, The Flying Lizards rode the crest of the New Wave peaking with the international hit single Money. First album players included sound stylists in their own right David Toop and Steve Beresford, with vocals from Vivien Goldman. This also included the first two singles made by Cunningham, Summertime Blues and Money with monotone vocals by his art school colleague Deborah Evans, recorded before the album. On the second album Cunningham was even more experimental and brought in contributions from Michael Nyman and Robert Fripp, plus vocals by Patti Palladin. Less successful commercially but more highly rated critically at the time. The music Cunningham created follows after Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream, helping pave the way for the employment of electronica in later UK pop music with the likes of Stereolab, St Etienne and Portishead. Of Cabbages And Kings
Released 23rd February 2009. Another swinging ‘60s pop duo of the utmost pedigree? Oh yes... but one with a difference… Having led the LA division of the British Invasion for some years - appearing on Batman no less – that most British of duos Chad & Jeremy were feeling the changing times and were ready to pull out the stops in creating a studio masterpiece to rival the best of ‘em. Super-producer Gary Usher (then on a roll with Sagittarius and The Notorious Byrd Brothers among others) was enlisted and brought along his full menagerie: Curt Boettcher, The Firesign Theatre, members of The Millennium and the wrecking crew. Despite this hallowed company, our boys remained resolutely in command, emerging as gifted writers, arrangers and performers in the process. Our Price: £9.95

The Hearts And Flowers Collection
UNFORTUNATELY THIS TITLE IS CURRENTLY OUT OF STOCK. Cherry Red Records apologises for the unavailability of this album, however if you would like to be notified when it is on sale again then please email matti@cherryred.co.uk. Thanks.

An underrated part of the California 1960's folk-rock explosion, Hearts and Flowers were in fact instrumental in the coming country-rock style which became the "Sound Of California" in the 1970's. Larry Murray moved from Gram Parson's hometown of Waycross, Georgia, to California, and played in Bluegrass groups with future Byrd Chris Hillman and future Burrito Brother and Eagle, Bernie Leadon. Meeting Dave Dawson and Rick Cunha, he formed Hearts and Flowers, who released their Nik Venet-produced debut on Capitol in the summer of 1967. A mixture of masterful and obscure covers and originals, the album gained critical acclaim. Reuniting with Bernie Leadon, the group recorded a second album, which met much the same fate despite it's outstanding quality, and it's should-have-been-a-hit version of the Rising Sons' "She Sang Hymns Out Of Tune". Only in retrospect does the importance of Hearts and Flowers become apparentas, their members scattered to the Flying Burrito Brothers, the Eagles, and the backing groups of Linda Rondstadt and Emmylou Harrisand varying degrees of fame......but their recorded legacy lives on!

You’ve Come That Way Before
DJs and hipsters worldwide bigging up an album by Christina Applegate's mom? You're putting me on, right? Well, er... NO!! Radiant New York based actress/songstress Nancy Priddy only made this one album, but what an album it is! A fine, low-key psych folk pop masterpiece, funky and folky and psychy-rocky and Lord knows what else all at once, with the Big Apple's finest. Nancy had been a mover and shaker on the Greenwich Village folk scene of the early 1960's, as a member of The Bitter End Singers and is the subject of the Stephen Stills-penned Buffalo Springfield classic, "Pretty Girl Why" (think "Priddy Girl Why"). The album was produced by industry legend Phil Ramone, then working with enigmatic audio innovator Enoch Light on his Project 3 roster including The Free Design, and obviously at the top of his considerable form. There are elements of folk, pop, soul, gospel, even children¹s music here, a unique sound and atmosphere which has made this one of those mysterious albums which commands top dollar without being obviously by any kind of "rock legend". Over startling arrangements centred around spare basslines, folk changes, experimental touches and DJ-enticing drum breaks, she sings lyrics far beyond the usual pop-romantic platitudes. Today, the album is rabidly sought after by DJs and the hordes of Wyrd Folk fans in that growing field - and big bucks indeed change hands - but here it is sounding better than ever on Rev-Ola!!!!

Crystal Blue Symphonies: The Psychedelic Years
Released 27/04/09. Wow, another in our splendid series of overlooked Psychpop...and what a corker it is! In Europe at least, Tommy James is kind of the forgotten man of the 1960s...hit after hit, and what's available in Europe? Nothing much! After a run of megahits that included ‘Mony Mony’ (come on, everyone remembers that!), Tommy was ready to unleash his very own psychpop masterpieces…two fabulous albums released in short order, Crimson and Clover and Cellophane Symphony…veritable orgies of bendy pop, psych extravaganzas, early Moogs, theremins and tremolo! These are two albums long overdue for the RevOla treatment and here they are both in one handy place! Our Price: £9.95
