Singing The Songs Of Paul Ryan 1968-69 - Barry Ryan

Singing The Songs Of Paul Ryan 1968-69
When Paul and Barry Ryan split as a performing duo in 1968 nobody expected to hear from them again. Their fine Britpop singles and overlooked semi-Freakbeat/Pop albums weren't selling, they were trapped on a cabaret circuit they loathed. The image of the handsome swinging, singing twin brothers was under severe strain. So when Barry reappeared at the end of the year and scored a colossal worldwide hit (reaching number one in six countries!) with the epic, Paul-penned "Eloise" it was akin to a particularly unlikely phoenix rising from the ashes. The single was a stunning five and a half minute tour de force of grandiose orchestral pop and Uber-Jim Webb-ism which sounded unlike anything else in the charts at the time, and is fondly remembered and covered worldwide still!

The subsequent entirely Paul-penned album, imaginatively entitled Barry Ryan Sings Paul Ryan, received rave reviews and has become something of a cult favourite amongst fans of contemporary orch-pop works by Scott Walker, Glen Campbell and even Tom Jones. Other hits including "Love Is Love" and "The Hunt" followed into the '70s, as did five more solo albums, none of which have ever been reissued on CD.... until now! "Barry Ryan: Singing The Songs Of Paul Ryan (1968-69)" couples that classic debut with its remarkable eponymous 1969 follow-up and adds two ultra-rare tracks found only on the German version of the second album, all remastered for your sonic delight! It also features in-depth liner notes containing new interview material with Barry, previously unseen photographs, rare cuttings and memorabilia. A great rediscovery awaits

On This Holy Night / Christmas With Chet Atkins
•    Vocalist-arranger Anita Kerr and Guitarist-producer Chet Atkins were  two of the architects of the Nashville Sound that transformed country music in the late 1950s and early 60s.

•    A consummate Django Reinhardt / Andrés Segovia influenced guitarist who, in addition to a successful solo career, worked with Elvis Presley, the Everly Brothers and Jim Reeves, Chet Atkins eventually ran RCA's A & R department in Nashville, signing such million-selling talents  as Floyd Cramer, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton to the label.

•    Anita Kerr is without doubt one of the greatest musicians America has produced. During those halcyon days she provided high-quality vocal arrangements and wrote string parts for literally hundreds of Nashville Sound sessions. She arranged both orchestra and chorus for such big hits as Skeeter Davis's 'End of the World' and Roy Orbison's monumental 'Only the Lonely'. Her stamp was on the city's music. Chet Atkins felt that Kerr "gave a sophistication and smoothness to country music that made it so much more palatable to audiences all over the world."

•    This Christmas edition combines On This Holy Night, which Anita Kerr and her singers recorded for the Nashville-based music publisher services organisation SESAC in 1959, with the delightful Christmas with Chet Atkins, a superlative set which, with backing from Kerr, showcases Chet's traditional, classical and modern pop influences with tremendous verve. It is unarguably one of the best seasonal records ever made.

•    The package is completed by a selection of other fine Christmas productions involving the Kerr Singers; Bobby Helms famous 1958 recording of Jingle Bell Rock with its original flip-side, Captain Santa Claus, and some charmingly goofy selections from organist Lenny Dee, signed off by Kerr herself as - under one of her singers many pseudonyms - The Holidays.

Please Note: This title is released November 17 and will not be dispatched before this date.

Saint Etienne Presents: Songs For A London Winter
Sarah Cracknell, Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs have ransacked their record collections, with a helping hand from DJ Martin Green, to give you the sound of Piccadilly in December – baubles, bangles, tinsel and whisky macs. This is a decidedly London selection – Joe Henderson's ‘Sleighride’ has the distinct feel of Hampstead Heath rather than Lapland.

Homegrown rockers like Billy Fury and Adam Faith are found rubbing shoulders over a Christmas pint with John Barry and jazzers Kenny Baker and John Dankworth. Tricia Marks and Lyn Cornell provide festive glamour.

Saint Etienne member and pop historian Bob Stanley writes the sleevenotes. This is a soundtrack for the Hamley's shop window and a proper 60s UK time capsule.

•    All UK recordings
•    The latest in the hugely successful 'Saint Etienne Presents' series.
•    Many tracks on CD for the first time
•    Not the same old Christmas songs!

Please Note: This title is released November 24 and will not be dispatched before this date.
