September 17 1969 - Astrud Gilberto

September 17 1969
Is there any need for an introduction to Astrud Gilberto? The Girl From Ipanema, who brought the nonchalant 'Vaga' vocal style of the Brasilian New Wave to international attention and launched a thousand indie-girl records and fantasies in a time and place she never imagined....??

Rev-Ola proudly presents the second in our series of Astrud Gilberto's wonderful albums - described as her best album by none other than popmeister Duglas T. Stewart of The BMX Bandits.

A move into softpop rendered in her trademark sexy style but with the surprising addition of some pretty funky playing. As her tenure at famed jazz label Verve was running down, her versions of songs by The Beatles, Bee Gees, Margo Guryan and The Doors gave a new slant to her amazing talents. Simply lovely!

Brasilia - Sinfonia da Alvorada
In 1958, Juscelino Kubitschek, president of Brazil, asked Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes to compose a symphonic suite to be used at the opening ceremony of Brasilia, a city, designed by the architect Oscar Niemeyer, that was being built in the state of Goias in the middle of the country and which would be inaugurated as the nation's new capital in April 1960. Niemeyer's vision was one of history's boldest, most dramatic architectural statements that for Brazil was meant to represent a new vision for the future. Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moreas were two of the principle artchitects of bossa nova. The pair famously co-wrote The Girl From Ipanema and Jobim produced Joao Gilberto's original trilogy of albums that would be the stylistic blueprint for bossa. For the Sinfonia Alvorada, Tom Jobim is conducting the orchestra with the participation of Radames Gnattali (piano), Vinicius de Our edition features the original Oscar Niemeyer artwork. Sinfonia da Alvorada is accompanied by another major Braziilian orchestral work, The Forest of The Amazon, by Heitor Villa-Lobos. Conducted by the composer in his last year, 1959, with the great Brazilian soprano Bidu Sayão, the piece displays the whole range of Villa-Lobos's style, brilliantly evoking the sounds and colours of the jungle with musical. Mafioso...And Other Great Piccioni Scores
•    Piero Piccioni was one of the golden generation of popular Italian composers, emerging  in the '50s and early 1960s, whose primary focus was in the creation of film scores.

•    With the advent of the New Wave and the arrival of the spaghetti western invented by the genre's masters directors, Sergio Leone and Sergio Corbucci,  Piccioni, and such contemporaries as Ennio Morricone, Stelvio Cipriani, Bruno Nicolai, Francesco De Masi and Nico Fidenco were propelled onto the international stage.

•    If Morricone re-wrote the musical language of film, Piccioni also quickly established a unique compositional voice; an impressive, astounding blend of jazz, pop and orchestral styles.

•    The composer's innate versatility and eclecticism is showcased by the scores featured in this edition. The centrepiece is his music for Alberto Lattuada's Mafioso, a 1962 black comedy starring the great Alberto Sordi  for whom Piccioni would eventually write more than fifty film soundtracks. Mafioso is a clever, thought-provoking film that many consider set the standard for every mafia film that would follow

•    Also featured within our presentation is music from the television documentaries Il Mondo di Notte (The World by Night), a selection of themes from what is arguably Piccioni's most lovely score, Mauro Bolognini's Senilita (Careless) - an intense romance set in Trieste, which finds the lovely Claudia Cardinale alongside a desperate Tony Franciosa.
The finishing touch is the long deleted Piero Piccioni Presenta Lydia MacDonald album. Born in Edinburgh of a Scottish father and an Italian mother, MacDonald - with Edda Dell'Orso and Mina - was one of the composer's favourite female vocalists. She famously performed Mr. Dante Fontana and Richmond Bridge on Fumo di Londra, and her distinctive,
sensual voice illuminated any number of Piccioni's scores.

N.B. This album is released August 18 and will not be dispatched before this date.
