Down in L.A. - Brewer & Shipley

Down in L.A.
A few years before they took that one toke over the line, BREWER & SHIPLEY were hard working staff songwriters for A&M Records’ publishing subsidiary, Good Sam Music. The duo soon after secured a recording contract with A&M, and their debut LP, Down In L.A., was issued in October 1968.

Sounding like a hybrid of the psychedelic country rock of Sweetheart Of The Rodeo-era Byrds, and the studio experimentation of Curt Boettcher’s Millennium/Sagittarius projects, Down In L.A. is finally now being issued on CD for the first time ever.

Coproduced by JERRY RIOPELLE (Phil Spector, The Parade, Beau Brummels), Down In L.A. showcases the talents of many Wrecking Crew members, including Leon Russell, Hal Blaine, Jim Messina, and Jim Gordon.

The 16-page, full-colour booklet includes rare, unpublished photos and extensive liner notes featuring the participation of Michael Brewer & Tom Shipley, and original co-producer Jerry Riopelle.
SOURCED FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES.

Press:-

"Issued in October 1968 and reissued on CD for the first time, Down In LA is an exquisite collection, brimming full of infectious, melodic songs, striking close-harmony vocals, ringing acoustic guitars and crystal-clear production”

Record Collector May 2012

"Eleven beautifully crafted tracks include the original version of 'Keeper Of The Keys' (recorded by HP Lovecraft) and 'Time And Changes' (The Poor, The Afex) and bring to mind the lush sections of Love's Forever Changes or Spirit's debut. Featuring wrecking crew members Hal Blaine and Leon Russell, the musicianship and song writing are nothing short of sublime."

Waterbeds In Trinidad
Hey, everybody loves The Association! "Along Comes Mary", "Windy", "Never My Love", "Cherish". Their lush harmonic pop provided an alternative soundtrack to the late '60s and their string of nine Warner Brothers albums between 1966 and 1971 represent a body of work unsurpassed by their peers. It might be surprising to discover, therefore, that as late as 1972 they were still making top quality music, albeit for a new label, Columbia. Their version of "Darling Be Home Soon" may have failed to crack the US charts after a run of 12 hit singles but it's probably the best Lovin' Spoonful cover of them all (and that's saying something!). The accompanying album, Waterbeds In Trinidad, was the last long-player cut by the original group and has an undeniable elegiac quality to it. They tackle John Stewart's "Little Road And A Stone To Roll" and Goffin & King's "Snow Queen" alongside the usual array of original compositions, mostly composed by returning prodigal son and founder member Jules Alexander. An overlooked jewel in the Association's crown, it's about time this album was recognised by a wider audience overlooked gem from these archetypal Californian soft pop legends! Rmastered from the master tapes in the usual breath-taking Rev-Ola style! rand new liner notes by soft pop queen Dawn Eden!

Winds Of Change
In these more cynical times, it is easy to see this seminal album in a somewhat ambivalent light...everybody's favourite Geordie hell-raiser, Eric Burdon caught on the cusp between being Britain's Blues-meister supreme and being Hitler out of the producers?! Yet there is so much more here, two international hit singles, garage blues and psychedelic jams to match anyone. Produced by bizarrely unsung dylan/zappa/velvets producer tom wilson. This is as amazing a forgotten gem as the 2 albums them made on tower around the same time! Our Price: £9.95

The Rise And Fall Of Honesty
Released on 29/03/10. A masterpiece of psychedelic Americana: Maffitt & Davies came with the same batch of oddities on Capitol as Euphoria, Food and Common People. A strange batch to be sure, of orchestral psychpop and folk-rock which is only now being rediscovered and loved... There are many gems on this exceptional album... Bob Dylan’s Just Like A Woman is transformed into heartbreaking orchestrated folkrock... Forest Lawn, the album’s undeservedly failed single, has a distinct Face to Face Kink¹s sound replete with dobro and freaky church organ. Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues the other Dylan cover on this record takes a Byrds/Everly Brothers vocal harmony approach reminiscent of nothing less than late 60s Dillards on their folk-rock outings. A visionary slice of American music that predates the alt. country/folk boom by a mile -dark lyrics, strings, phasing and tablas abound. In addition to the album, we have a batch of outtakes and single tracks which will take your breath away; all in all a wonderful new discovery.... Our Price: £9.95

Stone Country
Stone Country the Hollywood, CA-based psychedelic country-rock outfit led by gifted singer/songwriter/guitarist Steve Young. Young had moved to Los Angeles in 1964 and began working with Van Dyke Parks and Stephen Stills while keeping his day job as a mailman. He formed Stone Country in 1967 and soon thereafter the band was signed to RCA Records. After releasing several singles, RCA issued the group's only album, Stone Country, in March 1968, produced by Rick Jarrard, who also produced Jefferson Airplane and Harry Nilsson's Pandemonium Shadow Show. The group disbanded when, in 1969, Young signed as a solo artist with A&M Records. This is there only and debut album, a fantastic record that is a must have for any one with even the slightest interest in things of psychedelic or country nature. Our Price: £9.95
