Hungry, So Angry |
| cdmred182 |
|
Medium Medium were originally signed to Cherry Red in 1981 and were one of the first signings of then A&R man Mike Alway. The band's first single, Hungry So Angry caused quite an immediate stir at club and alternative radio level, and created quite a buzz around the band! The single was picked up by alternative radio in the US and featured for several weeks in the Billboard Alternative Top 50 chart. The band recorded one album for Cherry Red, "The Glitterhouse" which received consistently good reviews. Sadly, the band broke up in 1983 but was not forgotten as Hungry So Angry has been used on many compilation CDs over the years, especially in the US. This overdue CD re-press consists of 15 tracks and also includes the very rare promo video of Hungry So Angry as an enhanced track. Western Promise
Running With The Saints: The Best Of |
| cdmred351 |

Western Promise, were wild 2nd generation Liverpool-Irish boys, who walked it like they talked it. Stage invasions, riots and fights at live gigs were common with the band right in the thick of it. They released an album and two singles on Midnight Music in the mid-80s.The band played with The Clash on several occasions and toured with Joe on the infamous Rock Against the Rich Tour in 88/89. They headlined their biggest gig with Billy Bragg and The Icicle Works at Liverpool’s People Festival in 85 with over 20 000 people in attendance. Also playing with The Las, The Christians, The Farm Paul Weller, Madness, and many more. Five or Six
Acting On Impulse ~ The Best Of |
| cdmred324 |
|
A timely retrospective of one of the less heralded groups of the classic Cherry Red era of the early eighties but one in whom interest is growing. Musically akin to such contemporaries as Wire and This Heat, Five or Six had the distinction of providing the opening track (Portrait) to Cherry Red¹s historic Pillows and Prayers compilation and this little masterpiece is duly featured on this Best of collection. Also featured are such stellar singles as Another Reason (produced by the late and very legendary Kevin Coyne) and Polar Exposure and also the outstanding cuts from their impossibly rare and greatly sought after Spanish import album, "Play Me That song That Goes Yeah, Yeah, Yeah". After the group disbanded, its members went on to a multifarious range of artistic occupations, such as members of Spring Heel Jack, the Shock Headed Peters, at Factory Records and 4AD Records and in the drama department of the BBC. Portrait / Another Reason / Lost Cause / Polar Exposure / Chalk Circle / Sleepwalk / You The Night And The Music / The Trial / Theme / Dreams I Cannot Keep |

Gilberto Gil
The Sound Of Revolut ion 1968-69 |
| acmem142cd |
|
The Sound of Revolution combines Gilberto Gils brilliant 1968 and 69 Tropicalia albums, Frevo Rasgado and Cerebro Electronico; joyous, extraordinarily inventive pop music made against a background of terrible political unrest in Brazil and in the shadow of both imprisonment and eventually exile both for Gil and his friend Caetano Veloso. The 1968 album is electrified by the meteoric Os Mutantes and both sets arranged by Rogerio Duprat who contributes a range of totally original textures and orchestration much as George Martin did with Strawberry Fields and Sgt Pepper. Suffice to say, this combination of precocious talent achieves a magical and historically important result. Tropicalia-Os Mutantes-Rogerio Duprat-LSD-Revolution Gilberto Gil narrated recent BBC4 documentary about Tropicalia. Frevo Rasgado / Coragem Pra Suportar / Domingou / Marginália Ii / Pega A Voga, Cabeludo / Ele Falava Nisso Todo Dia / Procissão / Luzia Luluza / Pé Da Roseira / Domingo No Parque / A Luta Contra A Lata Ou A Falência Do Café / Cérebro Eletrônico / Volks Volkswagem Blue / Aquele Abraço / Léguas E Meia / A Voz Do Vivo / Vitrines / 2001 / Futurível / Objeto Semi-Identificado / Omã Iaô |

Graced by the exquisite arrangements of Roberto Menescal, The Voice of Brazil combines Elis Regina s masterful 1968 LP, Elis, Como e Porque (Elis, How and Why) with recordings made a year later in London where Menescal teamed with Peter Knight (of Moody Blues fame). Although the flawless album she made in 1974 with Tom Jobim is regarded internationally as one of the great treasures of Bossa Nova, almost three decades after her death Elis remains one of the music world's best-kept’secrets, a truly great’singer who deserves to be recognised beyond her beloved Brazil. Stylistically, Elis Regina is part Dusty Springfield, part Blossom Dearie, considered to be part of the Tropicalia family.Aquarela Do Brasil / O Sonho / Vera Cruz / Casa Forte / Canto De Ossanha / Giro / O Barquinho / Andança / Récit De Cassard / Samba Da Pergunta / Memórias De Marta Saré / Corrida De Jangada / A Time For Love / Se Você Pensa / Giro / A Volta / Zazueira / Upa Neguinho / Watch What Happens / Wave / How Insensitive / Você / O Barquinho |

The Family Tree
Miss Butters |
| crrev185 |
|
A classic of West Coast psych-pop: After the breakup of San Francisco garage groups The Brogues (Ain't No Miracle Worker ), most members went on to Quicksilver Messenger Service; bassist Bill Whittington formed The Family Tree with Bob Segarini of The Ratz and the enigmatic Lee Michaels. The latter soon dropped out, and a couple of innovative singles for the mysterious LA based Mira label brought them to the attention of not only RCA, but sunbury music's Dick Campbell and his friend and big hope, Harry Nilsson. With input from Harry (at this time being hailed as a genius by The Beatles and writing songs for everyone from The Monkees and The Turtles on down) the band embarked on the semi-conceptual album Miss Butters , an amazing semi-lost gem of West Coast psych-pop genius and certainly on a par with Harry Nilsson's own records of the period. Birthday / Dirgeday / Melancholy Vaudeville Man / Any Other Baby / Sideshow / Mrs. Mcpheeny (Has Flu In Her Chest And Has Needed A Rest For So Long) / Butters Lament / Simple Life / Slippin' Thru My Fingers / Nine To Three / Lesson Book Life / Nickelodeon Music / Miss Butters / Do You Have The Time? / Keepin' A Secret / Slippin' Thru My Fingers / Miss Butters / He Spins Around / She Had To Fly |

Honeybus
Story |
| crrev249 |
|
In recent years Honeybus have outgrown the one hit wonder tag that plagued them for years and become one of the most treasured British bands of the late 60s. Sure, I Can t Let Maggie Go represents a high watermark of intelligent pop records reaching the top ten but there s so much else besides. The band cut three singles in 1967 and 68, written and fronted by Pete Dello who promptly quit after Maggie hit and embarked on a fascinating and complex solo career. Not to be outdone, the band re-grouped and cut three further singles and an album that almost never got released. The story goes that upon their split in early 1970, somebody at their label, Deram Records, heard the recordings and demanded that it be released. And hence it was, posthumously and to little fanfare in 1970. Blending the kind of pure, crystalline folk-tinged baroque pop that had characterised most of their singles with flashes of psychedelia, country and bubblegum, the twelve songs that make up Story are uniformly stunning creations, played with skill and confidence, arranged for strings and woodwind and blessed with a sympathetic, understated production. We’ve added all eleven non-album Deram single sides, restored the original album artwork and told the Honeybus story with input from the band themselves. Story / Black Mourning Band / Scarlet Lady / Fresher Than the Sweetness I / Water / He Was Columbus / Ceilings No 1 / Under The Silent Tree / She S Out There / She Said Yes / I Remember Caroline / How Long / Ceilings No 2 / Bonus Tracks - Delighted To See You / The Breaking Up Scene / (Do I Figure) In Your Life / Throw My Love Away / I Can’t Let Maggie Go / Tender Are The Ashes / Girl Of Independent Means / How Long (Single Version) / She Sold Blackpool Rock / Would You Believe / The Right To Choose |

Kathe Green
Run’the Length Of Your Wildness |
| crrev250 |
|
Wow! Something of a major discovery here we thinks. Californian actress/model/singer Kathe Green cut this hugely sought after but rare-as-hell long player for Deram in 1969 after having appeared in’the Party with Peter Sellers. Finding herself in London as guest and bosom buddy of Richard Harris, himself enjoying a spin-off career as a hugely successful pop star at the time, Kathe found herself singing Mark Lester s vocal parts on Where Is Love? for the soon-to-be-massive Oliver soundtrack. She was snapped up by Deram where she was teamed up with in-house whiz-kid producer Wayne Bickerton, arranger supreme John Cameron and the cream of London session players. Kathe wrote 10 of the album s 13 tracks, which recall all manner of contemporary female vocalists of the time, from Marianne Faithfull to Sandie Shaw to Dana Gillespie (with whom Kathe shared Bickerton s production savvy, not to mention a couple of his tunes). She also turns in a lump-to-the-throat reading of Cameron s perennial If I Thought You d Ever Change Your Mind. Housed in a striking sleeve which featured gushing notes by the likes of Peter Sellers, Rex Harrison and Simon Dee and named after a line of poetry bestowed on her by Richard Harris himself, Run the Length Of Your Wildness disappeared as quickly as it had come, only being picked up on through internet exposure over the last year or so. Produced in conjunction with Kathe herself, Rev-Ola is proud, nay humbled, to present the first ever reissue of this lost late 60s femme pop classic! Primrose Hill/ Ring Of String / Only A Fool / Why / Bossa Nova / Tears In My Eyes / If I Thought You D Ever Change / Your Mind / Promise Of Something New / Once There Was You / Part Of Yesterday / I Ll Never Forget / Run the Length Of Your Wildness / I Love You (Though You Are Not Here) |

Dave Mason
Alone Together |
| crrev251 |
|
One time Kim Fowley protégé, one time Spencer Davis guitar tech Dave Mason was a key and founder member of psych/pop/funk/soul/fusion legends Traffic. The writer of many of the band's early classics including the timeless and much-covered Feelin Alright? Mason was the first to leave due to the classic 'musical differences. Moving to the US, his first solo album was one of the many recordings to come out of the Leon Russell/Delaney & Bonnie axis in1969/1970. Alone Together contains excellent, tightly constructed pop songs, redolent of his singles for Traffic, albeit extended in the then new style, built on a fat bed of acoustic guitars with tasteful electric guitar accents. Mason's vocals are embellished with harmonies from Rita Coolidge, Claudia Lennear and Delaney & Bonnie. Besides the hit Only You Know and I Know , (also a hit for Delaney & Bonnie) highlights include the bouncy gospel-inflected Waitin' On You and the banjo-bejeweled Just a Song . Look at You Look at Me and the wonderfully wah-wahed Shouldn't Have Took More Than You Gave are reminiscent of Traffic, whose drummer, Jim Capaldi is among the all-star cast assembled here. Only You Know And I Know / Can't’stop Worrying, Can't’stop Loving / Waitin' On You / Shouldn't Have Took More / Than You Gave / World In Changes / Sad And Deep As You / Just A Song / Look At You, Look At Me |

Link Davis
Gumbo Ya-Ya - The Best Of 1948-58 |
| crrev252 |
|
Link Davis was probably the foremost Cajun fiddler of his generation. He not only excelled in the old timely tradition he was raised in, but was a hit artist in the Jazz influenced western swing field. He certainly prefigured what was to become Rockabilly, though his subjects were perhaps too regional and ethnic for a mainstream breakthrough into the nascent Rock and Roll... unperturbed, Link Davis turned out some of the most rockin' sides in all country music! Hit after hit, and lucrative featured session work, followed, right through until his death. Here are no less then 30 of the craziest sides by this classic artist, blending R&B, Country, and the eerie edge of his own Cajun heritage into a unique and rockin' blend. Gumbo Ya Ya indeed! Keith West is best remembered as the voice behind the legendary 'Grocer Jack' single and Excerpt From A Teenage Opera, became a champion of both the pop charts and the 60's psychedelic lifestyle. Away from the pin-up-mags Keith also made a serious impression on the underground scene with Tomorrow and enjoyed a wonderful and varied career. This compilation charts his progress through the 1960's and into the '70's with a remarkable collection of rare and previously un-issued tracks. Ranging from Four+One, The In Crowd - with guitarist Steve Howe to both Teenage Opera Singles. Keith Mansfield
All You Need Is |
| retro835 |
|
Famed arranger, music director, producer Keith Mansfield has arranged top tunes for the likes of Tom Jones, Dusty Springfield, Georgie Fame, Gilbert O'Sullivan and Robert Plant. He has also been a star of UK TV for 40 years. Wimbledon tennis, Grandstand, Athletics, The Big Match, The Sweeney all enhanced by Mansfield s impact on their soundtrack. The Big Match theme was recorded as The Young Scene for KPM in 1968, the same year as Mansfield also turned in the seminal arrangement for the Love Affair s break-through hit Everlasting Love. Also released then was his own solo record Soul Confusion, an organ led groove with a storming fuzz guitar break in the middle. So too the All You Need Is LP for CBS , where Mansfield was a staff producer for a time. This LP, here in its entirety, forms the backbone of our release to highlight the Mansfield sound, following on from our previous excursions in to the sounds of Brian Bennett and Alan Hawkshaw. In fact keyboard maestro Alan Hawkshaw is the provider of the extra-funky piano and Hammond organ work on All You Need Is. The other regular contributors are backing vocals from Sue & Sunny. In addition we have top picks from other CBS LPs Mansfield worked on. The recordings span 1968-1972. Everlasting Love / Rainbow Valley / Lovin’ things / Soul Thing / Love For Sale / Alan Haven / Am I The Same Girl (Soulful Strut) / Salena Jones / What Is This Thing Called Love / Salena Jones / Take Five / Walk On By / Moanin / The Serpent - Maynard Ferguson / Boogaloo / Soul Confusion - Keith Mansfield / Spinning Wheel – Maynard / Ferguson / All You Need Is Love / Whiter Shade Of Pale / You’ve Lost That Lovin Feeling / Reach Out (And I’ll Be There) / Rainbow Valley - Love Affair / Everlasting Love - Love Affair |

First recordings by the soul legend that set the style for the emergence of soul music! Not available for over 20 years, first time on CD Solomon Burke, a legend of the classic soul era with some 20 chart hits on Atlantic between 1961 and 1968 and his landmark Proud Mary LP (available now on Rev-Ola CRREV 187) cut in Muscle Shoals for Bell in 1969, began his musical life in the world of gospel as a boy preacher in his home city of Philadelphia, featuring in his own Solomon s Temple radio show. He was signed to Bess Berman s Apollo Records in New York s Harlem as a teenager in 1955, and recorded sessions in New York from 1955 to 1957, from which his singles released on the label comprise the contents of this album. Given his church roots, some tracks have an inspirational theme, but far from being a gospel album, the music is more notable in displaying the birth of soul music, with Solomon s vocal delivery close to the style of his future Atlantic hits. |
A truly Classic Rock album that has stood the test of time! A blend of classic blues based rock music fused with soul, funk and occasional heavier elements it marks the crowning glory of Trapeze. Recorded in 1970 just as the band changed from being a five piece to becoming a power trio, with Glenn Hughes, Mel Galley, Dave Holland. With hindsight you could say rather like one of their influences Cream, Trapeze were something of a budding super group with Hughes later joining Deep Purple, Galley joining Whitesnake and Holland joining Judas Priest. Medusa the album was written by the band members and produced by John Lodge, of the Moody Blues, and released on the Moodies own threshold label. They toured the world with it, and on occasion even had John Bonham sit in when they played his favourite song Jury. Black Cloud / Jury / Your Love Is Alright / Touch My Life / Seagull / Makes You Wanna Cry / Medusa |

Hanoi Rocks
The Nottingham Tapes |
| crdvd169 |
|
Formed in Helsinki in 1979, Hanoi Rocks drew their influences from American proto punk bands such as The Stooges, The Sonics and most obviously The New York Dolls. But unlike their punk peers they delved into the music that inspired their heroes Chuck Berry, Little Richard and other Rock n Roll icons. Add a healthy slice of glam rock to the mix and you had a band that would, in turn become a massive influence on generations of rock bands that followed, most significantly Guns and Roses and Manic Street Preachers. For the best part of five years Hanoi Rocks stormed the world, relocating first to Stockholm then London, and although they never achieved the commercial success they deserved they amassed a huge cult following that still thrives today. So much so that Mike Monroe and Andy McCoy reformed as Hanoi rocks in 2002 and are still touring. On 23rd April 1984 Hanoi Rocks played at the Palais in Nottingham, England. That night the Jettisoundz video crew shot a barnstorming Hanoi Rocks gig that has since established itself in the annals of Rock n Roll legend. The Nottingham Tapes was born. Here, at last, for the first time on DVD, is that very footage in all its sleazy, gritty glory. As a piece of rock history it is priceless, as a piece of pure rock n roll pleasure it is peerless. Fields of the Nephilim
Live in Dusseldorf |
| crdvd170 |
|
Of all the bands involved in Britain's goth rock movement of the 1980s, Fields of the Nephilim were the most believable. The group's occult-inspired songs were sung in a guttural roar by vocalist Carl McCoy. Live appearances were shrouded with dim light and smoke machines, while band members stalked the stage in black desperado gear inspired by western dress. The band formed in 1984, and Beggar's Banquet, also the home of Goth Rockers Southern Death Cult and Bauhaus, signed them up and released the singles "Power" and "Preacher Man" in 1986. Both did well on the independent charts; "Preacher Man" made it to number two, increasing the expectation for debut album Dawnrazor, which appeared in 1987. The album also did well on the Indie charts, but later that year Fields of The Nephilim finally cracked the pop singles chart with "Blue Water." In June 1988, second album The Nephilim reached number 12 in the pop charts, while the single "Moonchild" made number 28. Carl McCoy left the band and took the name with him in October 1991. Nothing much was heard from the band until they truly returned in 2006 with Mourning Sun. Live in Dusseldorf captures the band at their live best during a European tour of 1991! Perfect Unpop Peel Show Hits & Long-Lost Lo-Fi Favourites. Vol.1 1976-80 |
| CDMRED352 |
|
Perfect Unpop is based on a dangerous assumption: that if you were ever touched by John Peel s enthusiasm for spiky 70s pop, then by now you’ve probably found yourself a copy of the Undertones Teenage Kicks . The same applies to raw, beautiful singles by the Buzzcocks, Joy Division, the Clash and the first five Fall albums none of which are included here. Instead, here s a collection of Peel favourites a little less likely to be anthologised, eulogised, or to crop up on your iPod. Anyone who ever cuddled up alone at night with Peel will recognise the glee with which he pounced on these devil may- care, slightly broken pop songs. Indie also-rans these bands may have been in the Sting n Bono scheme of things, but add up all these flashes of underdog genius, and here s a CD to rival any other from the era of the questionable stringy tie. Although we re missing the voice that always seemed to be speaking to us alone, the unearthing of these Nuggets from the play-lists will recreate something of the atmosphere of the Peel Show for his under-cover legions, and hopefully some young Johnny-cum-Latelies as well. Make no mistake; we’re talking all-time highlights here where six seconds of dead air would be followed by a sheepish, slightly breathless admission that Peel had been off bopping around the studio! Principal Edwards Magic Theatre is one of those hard-to classify bands that made the late 60s a musical adventure playground for listeners. What was more, the live music scene and airwaves were broad-minded enough to give bands who dared to be different the chance of exposure. They enjoyed the attention of the late John Peel who Broadcast them on his BBC shows and made them the first band to be signed to his dandelion record label. The Devon Tapes was recorded in the summer of 1974 under the shorter name Principal Edwards. Cherry Red are now proud to release these recordings for the first time ever to the public. In 1964 Dana Gillespie recorded her first single for Pye, with Donovan on guitar and became a regular on the folk circuit along with friends Donovan and David Bowie. She recalls: "I was doing folk because I couldn't afford a band and I hadn't found my musical niche".In those early years Dana got to know many of the top bands and people in the music business, appearing on Ready Steady Go and other cool TV shows of the era along with the legends of the British pop explosion. Eric Burdon & The Animals
Winds Of Change |
| CRREV246 |
|
In these more cynical times, it is easy to see this seminal album in a somewhat ambivalent light...everybody's favourite Geordie hell-raiser, Eric Burdon caught on the cusp between being Britain's Blues-meister supreme and being Hitler out of the producers?! Yet there is so much more here, two international hit singles, garage blues and psychedelic jams to match anyone. Produced by bizarrely unsung dylan/zappa/velvets producer tom wilson. This is as amazing a forgotten gem as the 2 albums them made on tower around the same time! Winds Of Change / Poem By The Sea / Paint It Black / Black Plague / Yes I’mExperienced / San Franciscan Nights / Man Woman / Hotel Hell / Good Times / Anything / It S All Meat- Bonus Tracks - Good Times (Mono Version) / Ain’t That So (Mono Version) / San Franciscan Nights (Mono Version) / Gratefully Dead (Mono Version)

Noel Harrison |

Noel Harrison was many things, actor, singer, director, composer, carpenter, Son of Rex and star of the Girl From Uncle opposite the delectable Stefanie Powers (purrr ). He sang the Oscar-winning the Windmills Of Your Mind, the theme tune to the 1967 smash movie The Thomas Crown Affair, and released a string of albums in the 1960s and 70s before landing his own TV show, Take Time. What is probably less known is that his self-titled 1966 sophomore long-player is virtually a tribute to Bob Dylan. so enamoured was Harrison of the him, that he cut no less than four Dylan tunes and casually interspersed them with the obligatory-forthe- day Beatles. His take on It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue actually fared quite well when lifted as a single. So here is the album. A snapshot of an innocent time when be-suited pop stars acted and polo neck-clad TV stars recorded Dylan songs in an almost outmoded school big band style. It’s All Over Now / God Bless The Child / She S A Woman / Love Minus Zero / Nothing But A Fool / Mr Tambourine Man / Young Girl (Of Sixteen) / To Ramona / Much As I Love You / Like Strangers / All Blues / Tomorrow Is My Turn |

The Treniers
This Is It! |
| CRREV248 |
|
Say it one more time for the roots of Rock n Roll! The Treniers, led by identical twins Cliff and Claude Trenier had been active since the 1940s, playing a small-combo cross between swing and early rock n' roll. Though their sound was swing influenced, the Treniers incorporated a mighty thumping backbeat and songs that included the words "rock" and "roll" - "Rocking on Sunday Night" and "It Rocks! It Rolls! It Swings!"They were also known for the humorous content of many of their songs, and their on stage acrobatics were seen as precursors to the wild antics of many later rock and roll groups. In the 1950s, they moved closer towards an R&B influenced sound, but were unable to weather the influx of rock and roll. Nonetheless the group was considered a strong influence on bands such as their contemporaries Bill Haley and His Comets, and they were in fact one of the first to record Haley's "Rock-a-Beatin' Boogie". The group were featured in several films in the 1950s including The Girl Can't Help It and Don't Knock the Rock, which helped make them one of the most visible and popular bands of the early Alan Freed era of rock n Rolls. So here we have 30, count 'em 30 of their finest moments...how can you say no? Everybody Get Together / Why Do You Get So High, Shorty? / Go! Go! Go! (1951 Version) / It Rocks, It Rolls, It Swings / Rockin' On Sunday Night / Hi-Ho Silver! / Rockin' Is Our Bizness / This Is It! / you Know, Yeah! TIGER / Bug Dance / Rock-A-Beatin' Boogie / Out Of The Bushes / Rock 'N' Roll Call / Good Rockin' Tonight / Go! Go! Go! (1955 Version) / Everything's Wild In Wildwood / Trapped In The Web Of Love / Rock-A-Way / Sorrento / Lover, Come Back To Me / Cool It, Baby! / (We Want A) Rock And Roll President /Hey, Jacobia! / Drink Wine, Spo-Dee-O-Dee / Madune / ThE Longest Walk / Rock, Calypso Joe! / Holy Mackerel, Andy! / Oo-La-La / Goodnight Irene |

Juan Garcia Esquivel
Mexico Days |
| ACMEM139CD |
|
The King of Space-Age Pop, the genius of Mexican composer-arranger Juan Garcia Esquivel lay in his audacious instrumentation; his blending together of exotic sounds from other cultures and experimentation with the new tonal palettes that were becoming available in the mid-fifties period from which these, his earliest commercial recordings, derived. Esquivel has been proclaimed by Brian Wilson and by Simpsons creator Matt Groening, "Who'd have thought that out of a genre as debased as easy listening would come something so mind-curdlingly bizarre and beautiful." This set comprises the first digital release of Esquivel s impossibly rare first album Las Tandas de Juan Garcia Esquivel from 1957 coupled with To Love Again; a collection of singles and 78 s recorded in Mexico between 1954-57. Collar De Perlas / Poupurri Curiel / Medley / Goya Universidad / Una Y Otra Vez Sketch Glenn Miller / Tren Nocturno / Nereidas / No Seas Asi / Capullito De Alheli / Bailando Sabras / Politecnico Rock And Roll / To Love Gain / Port-Au-Prince / Amor / Moonlight Enchantment / Nightingale / Nocturnal / Jungle Drums / Vereda Tropical / Hornblower's Serenade / Besame Mucho / Siboney / Nothing Ever Changes My Love For You |

Orson Welles
Your Obedient Servant |
| ACMEM140CD |
|
Orson Welles is a titantic figure in popular culture. Before Kane, before Ambersons, The Lady From Shanghai and The Third Man; Before Touch of Evil, his astounding Othello, Chimes At Midnight and F for Fake, Welles created the sensational War of the Worlds broadcast that terrified a nation of American radio listeners. While Hollywood beckoned, Welles and his company, The Mercury Theatre continued to produce compelling radio drama that still sounds extraordinary. Make no mistake, if radio held sway over us like it did during its Golden Age, much of Welles' work in the medium would be as venerated as Kane or any of the other creative triumphs that were to follow. The Hitch-hiker and the chilling Search for Henri Le Fevre were written by Lucille Fletcher. Sredni Vashtar is the work of the inscrutable late nineteenth century English writer, Saki The Music for all three performances was composed by long-time Welles (and Hitchcock) collaborator Bernard Herrmann The Hitch-Hiker / The Search For Henri Lefevre / Redni Vashtar |

With recordings made at least a decade before Psychedelia, More Flowers of India showcases the beautiful, dreamlike art of Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan and attests to the extraordinary influence of Indian classical music on western culture. By the early Seventies, both men had been signed to the Beatles' Apple label and thanks to the revolution they spear-headed, the global musical landscape had altered irrevocably. The Beatles, The Doors, The Byrds and John Coltrane were amongst the many that came under the spell of these great masters Ravi Shankar-Raga Ahir Bhairav / Ravi Shankar-Raga Simhendra Madhyamam / Ravi Shankar-Sindhi-Bhairavi / Ravi Shankar-Bhimpalasi / Ali Akbar Khan-Raag Darbari |

The wonderful Tina Mason exploded on the L.A. scene in 1966, appearing at Disneyland and later starring as a regular on Dick Clark's Where The Action Is, where she met future husband and Paul Revere & The Raiders bassist Phil Fang Volk. After fronting Tina & The Mustangs, she embarked upon recording 1967's Is Something Wonderful! with Electric Prunes producer David Axelrod and the great L.A. arranger H.B. Up The Junction - O/S/T |
| RPM189 |
|
Based on Nell Dunn s controversial novel, the 1968 film Up The Junction pulled few punches in dealing with contemporary London working class life. With a cast featuring Suzy Kendall and Dennis Waterman, the certificate X movie was also notable for a strong score performed and written by Mike Hugg and Manfred Mann. Not their first foray in film music, it nevertheless remains one of their strongest works of the period and is hugely enjoyable in its own right. Director Peter Collinson was more than pleased with the outcome: The result was incredible; they captured the heart of the picture. Their music belonged to the picture, it was not super imposed. The tunes will exist long after the picture has been forgotten!
