| February | | ^top | | Cherry Pop! | Haywoode
Arrival |
| CRPOP37 |
| Released on 15/02/10. London-born Sidney Haywoode trained from an early age at London's prestigious Corona Stage Academy and was signed by CBS in 1983, following numerous acting, singing, dancing and modelling roles in the West End, in films and on TV.Debut single, 'A Time Like This', reached the Top 5 in the US Hot Dance Club Play Chart and immediately established her distinctive brand of spirited, soulful funk/pop. Via a succession of singles - including two forgotten gems by then-little-known underground dance producers Stock, Aitken & Waterman, 'You'd Better Not Fool Around' and 'Getting Closer' (covered later by Kylie) - full international chart success finally struck for Haywoode with 'Roses' in July 1986. The long-awaited 'Arrival' album was finally unveiled, showcasing new tracks including Haywoode's take on Prince's debut hit 'I Wanna Be Your Lover'. The album soon became a much-sought-after 'lost classic' of the era, with CDs from Japan (the only territory releasing the format beyond vinyl and cassette) still regularly fetching ridiculous prices on eBay. Included with this full-to-capacity 17-track digitally-remastered Special Edition CD are 7 Bonus tracks plus a comprehensive colour booklet of pictures, analysis, photo discography, lyrics and exclusive brand new interviews with Haywoode herself and those involved with her career. Bomb The Bass
Into The Dragon Plus |
| CRPOP42 |
| Bomb The Bass exploded into the UK singles charts with their debut single Beat Dis in February 1988, reaching number 2. Initially little was known about the people behind the record as it appeared from nowhere and was released on an unknown label, Mister-Ron Records, as it turned out an imprint of Rhythm King Records. Reputedly costing £500 to record Beat Dis was a record of moment, marking the shift away from expensive recording studios to more homemade record making, utilising the increasingly affordable sampling technology that was at the heart of the band’s output. The band went on to produce 3 further albums (with another one on the way in 2010) that refused to be formula or predictable. The development of the sound/direction is a lasting feature of their output. Beat Dis (Us 7 Mix) / Megablast Rap (Version) Featuring Merlin / On The Cut / Don T Make Me Wait / Dynamite Beats / Mega Blast (Hip Hop On Precinct 13) / Hey You! / Shake It / Say A Little Prayer / Beat Dat (Freestyle Scratch Mix) / Bonus Tracks- Beat Dis (Gangster Boogie inc. Remix) / Don’t Make Me Wait (Maximum Frequency Mix) / Megablast (Original Rap Featuring Merlin) / Say A Little Prayer (Get Down & Pray Mix) | |
Belouis Some
Some People New Master Edition |
| CRPOP15 |
| Released on 01/02/10. Born Neville Keighley, Some released his first LP Some People in 1985 and the title track was a club hit.Although Some's contribution to the Pretty in Pink soundtrack, "Round, Round," did not penetrate the mainstream, it introduced Some to an audience outside of discotheques. Produced by Bernard Edwards, "Round, Round" had enough electric guitars to seduce rock fans while maintaining the interest of the dance crowd with its pounding groove. Imagination , a song from Some People , was reissued in 1986, peaking at number 17 on the U.K. pop charts. Both Some People and Imagination were remixed several times. In 1987, Some recorded his self-titled second album, but it failed to duplicate the success of his debut. Some then disappeared from the music scene, lost in an '80s "Where Are They Now?" file until 1993 when he released Living Your Life. New sleeve-notes by Classic Rocks Malcolm Dome Some People / Stand Down / Imagination / Walk Away / Aware Of You / Target Practice / Have You Ever Been In Love / Tail Lights / Jerusalem / Bonus Tracks- Imagination - Dance Mix / Stand Down - Live Version / Some People – Extended / Some People -Dub Mix / Jerusalem - Instrumental Version / Target Practice | |

| ^top | | Cherry Tree | Zakarrias
Zakarrias |
| CRTREE006 |
| Released on 22/02/10. Recorded in London in the summer of 1971 by Austrian singer/songwriter Bobby Haumer and an English pick-up band, Zakarrias was issued on the highly collectable Deram label. However, Deram withdrew the album almost immediately when they discovered that Haumer didn’ t have a work permit and therefore had to return to Austria. The result is one of the rarest slabs of early Seventies vinyl, original copies having sold for in excess of $1000 on the rare occasions that they surface.Full of unexpected melodic shifts, and with an overwhelming sense of space and unresolved tension, the album skilfully blends singer/songwriter introversion with elements of folk, blues, psychedelia and progressive rock. Antonio Carlos Jobim
The Music Of |
| ACMEM181CD |
| Released on 22/02/10. The Music of Antonio Carlos Jobim combines rare Brazilian recordings by the pioneers of bossa nova to document the vital first year of the genre. Beginning with João Gilberto's Desafinado, that introduced the world to this exciting new style, so simple, yet so shockingly sensual. In addition to Gilberto, the programme comprises six absolutely essential cuts from Silvia Telles, perhaps the finest interpreter of Jobim's compositions and important contributions from the virtuoso guitarists Luiz Bonfa and Bola Sete, the organist Walter Wanderley and amongst others the Brazilian Sinatra, Dick Farney. We have also included the Jobim compositions from the film Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus), the success of which did so much to bring bossa nova to world attention, including a historic recording of A Felicidade by the star of the movie, Marpessa Dawn. It is a musical snapshot of Rio de Janeiro in 1959. Blossom Dearie
Little Jazz Bird |
| ACMEM182CD |
| Released on 22/02/10. Blossom Dearie was one of the unique jazz voices of the second half of the 20th century; one of the great interpreters of American song in the post-war era. She liked to describe herself as a songwriters singer. Blossom Dearie’s work blurred the line between jazz and cabaret. An interpretive minimalist with caviar taste in songs and musicians, she was a genre unto herself. Her preference was for small groups comprising the best jazz musicians available. In the late fifties (the period covered by Little Jazz Bird) these groups invariably featured the guitarists Kenny Burrell, Herb Ellis and Mundell Lowe, the bassist Ray Brown and the drummers Jo Jones and Ed Thigpen, with Dearie’s own piano playing by no means outclassed by such stellar performers.Little Jazz Bird / Gentleman Friend / It's Too Good To Talk About Now / Chez Moi / You Fascinate Me So / You've Got Something I Want / Boum / L' Etang / Hello Love / Someone To Watch Over Me / Lucky To Be Me / Just In Time / Some Other Time / Dance Only With Me / I Like Myself / The Party's Over / How Will He Know / It's Love / Hold Me, Hold Me, Hold Me / Lonely Town / Be Still TV / Short P, Not LP / Surrey With The Fringe On Top | |
Brian Easdale / Constant Lambert
The Red Shoes / Horoscope |
| ACMEM64CD |
| Released on 01/02/10. Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s The Red Shoes of 1948 is simply one of the most extraordinary and important British films in cinema history. An exhuberant, lavish, daring, technicolor epic that has influenced generations of filmmakers, artists and aspiring ballerinas. Although made in the late forties, The Red Shoes is decades ahead of its time; it is shown regularly on television and is regarded as the definitive film about the world of dance.Brian Easdale won an Oscar for his score and was described by Powell as the ideal collaborator . This is an internationally celebrated piece of work and in the 80s, Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorcese did much to bring attention to Powell’s work which they both cited as a major influence. | ^top | | Grapefruit | Philamore Lincoln
The North Wind Blew South |
| CRSEG011 |
| Released on 14/02/10. One of the most mysterious albums of the late Sixties, British singer/songwriter Philamore Lincoln’s US-only release The North Wind Blew South including his original version of Temma Harbour, a song that became a Top Ten hit for Mary Hopkin - has attracted plenty of conjecture over the years, much of it concerning the alleged involvement of the Yardbirds (Chris Dreja took the album photo, while Jimmy Page contributed a fierce lead guitar break to one of the standout tracks, You’re The One ).This first-ever official reissue of a much-counterfeited set finally sets the record straight about the elusive Mr. Lincoln and his highly convoluted musical history, which included previous pseudonymous stints as jazz drummer Phil Kinorra and blue-eyed soulster Julien Covey (whose A Little Bit Hurt single had been highly popular in Swinging London discotheques). The North Wind Blew South / You’re The One / Lazy Good For Nothin / Early Sherwood / Rainy Day / Temma Harbour / The Plains Of Delight / The County Jail Band / When You Were Looking My Way / Blew Through | |

Move Ass Baby |
| CDLEM154 |
| Released 15/02/10. Though lacking the teenage venom of cuts such as 1969 and I Wanna Be Your Dog from The Stooges and the unadulterated raw power of, well, Raw Power, Move Ass Baby is still essential for die-hard fans. The album, culled from rehearsals in Detroit, for the band's 1973 tour, runs the gamut from full-fledged, ready-to record tunes to the types of swampy jams that the band has claimed indicative of their studio songwriting process. This album explores the creative process that gave birth to nearly all the Stooges albums. Starting with a jam session, an oldie or two, or maybe a blues riff, the songs gradually took shape and were refined from there. Here we find the Stooges in rehearsal, messing around with songs by Bo Diddley, Bob Dylan, Cream, and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. We hear the beginnings of songs that never went any further, such as Old King Live Forever , I Come From Nowhere or Wild Love , which had as much potential as any of their best material. And we have some very impromptu jams such as Move Ass Baby and a fascinating James Williamson solo performance. Much of this material has never been heard before. I Got A Right / Gimme Some Skin / I'm Sick Of You / Tight Pants / Scene Of The Crime / Wild Love / I Come From Nowhere / I'm So Glad / Delta Blues Shuffle / Old King Live Forever / Look So Sweet / I'm A Man / Mellow Down Easy / Move Ass Baby | |
Ava Cherry And The Astronettes
People From Bad Homes |
| CDLEM155 |
| People from Bad Homes is an album recorded by The Astronettes. It was belatedly released in 1995, 22 years after it was recorded. The Astronettes were a trio of backing singers recruited by singer David Bowie, debuting at The 1980 Floor Show fan club concert recorded on 18-20 October 1973 at the Marquee Club, London. They consisted of his then girlfriend Ava Cherry, his old schoolfriend Geoffrey MacCormack, under the alias Warren Peace, and Jason Guess, a friend of Cherry's. Bowie attempted to propel the group to fame, shortly afterwards taking them to London's Olympic Studios to record an album with himself as producer. The sessions were eventually abandoned as Bowie's own album, Diamond Dogs, took up more of his time. The masters remained in the possession of Tony DeFries, then manager of both Bowie and the Astronettes, while the group became backing singers on Bowie's subsequent American tour, and the album Young Americans.I Am Divine / I Am A Laser / Seven Days / God Only Knows / Having A Good Time / People From Bad Homes / Highway Blues / Only Me / Things To Do / How Could I Be Such A Fool / I'm In The Mood For Love / Spirits In The Night | |
Dana Gillespie
Andy Warhol |
| CDLEM156 |
| Dana Gillespie is nowadays known as a blues/R&B/jazz singer, but in her younger years she had two brief (but impressive) alternative careers. In 1967/68 she made two albums of folk pop, Foolish Seasons and Box Of Surprises. A long time friend and lover of David Bowie, she sang backing vocals on Ziggy Stardust and was signed to Bowie’s management company Mainman. For that company, she made two LPs, the superb Weren’t Born A Man (1973) and Ain’t Gonna Play No Second Fiddle (1974). Despite production from David Bowie, Mick Ronson and Robin Cable, and the support of the best studio musicians of the day, neither album was a hit and Gillespie concentrated on her sex-bomb film career before reinventing herself as a bawdy blues mama in the 1980s.Andy Warhol (From Weren’t Born A Man) / Weren’t Born A Man (From Weren’t Born A Man) / Lavender Hill (Previously Unreleased Produced, Arranged And Played On By Mick Ronson) / Really Love The Man (From Ain't Gonna Play No Second Fiddle) / Eternal Showman (From Weren’t Born A Man) / Never Knew (Previously Unreleased Version, Radically Different From The One On Ain’ T Gonna Play Arranged For Strings By Mick Ronson) / Don’t Mind Me (From Ain't Gonna Play No Second Fiddle) / Mother Don’t Be Frightened (From Weren’t Born A Man) / Stardom Road Parts I & Ii (From Weren’t Born A Man) / Wanderlust (From Ain't Gonna Play No Second Fiddle) / Dizzy Heights (From Weren’ T Born A Man) / Backed A Loser (From Weren’t Born A Man) / No Tail To Wag (From Ain't Gonna Play No Second Fiddle) / All Gone (From Weren’t Born A Man) | |

Boogie In My Bones ~ The Early Years 1957-1960 |
| PDROPCD8 |
| Released on 15/02/10. The tail end of the fifties proved a pivotal period in the history of Jamaican music. The indigenous Calypso-flavoured stylings of Mento gradually gave way to home-grown R&B, which in turn paved the way for the Ska sounds that were to dominate the early years of the following decade. And at the heart of each of these developments was Jamaica’s first singing superstar: Laurel Aiken. Featuring all of Laurel’s major Jamaican hits before his relocation to London in 1960, Boogie In My Bones highlights the Mento and raw R&B flavoured recordings that established him as the Island’s number one performer. The Essence Of Mahalia Jackson |
| SBIRD0008CD |
| Released on 22/02/10. Mahalia Jackson born on October 26 1911, the third of six children was born into object poverty living in a three room shack which was also home to twelve other members of her family including aunts and cousins as well as her brothers. She sang in local Baptist churches and most often at the Mount Mariah Baptist Church, the place her family attended. In 1927 at the age of sixteen Mahalia caught a train to Chicago. All she had was a suitcase, she still lived in the slums and worked as a maid but she was in Chicago! In the late forties she signed with the Apollo label and recorded W. Herbert Brewsters Move On Up A Little Higher . This recording exploded across America, the sonic boom of her powerful dustbowl gospel voice resonated from Los Angeles to the Eastern seaboard and the song sold a staggering 8,000,000 copies. Stores nationwide couldnt keep up with the demand, selling out as soon as they could stock up! So, Mahalia Jackson became a superstar, Europe wanted to see in person this voice from the Gods, so Mahalia Jackson went to Europe with an orchestra and sang her words, the word to thousands over there. Throughout that seismic decade of change and confrontation she became an irresistible force for the good of the civil rights movement but as the decade wore on she decided to step out of the political window. Gladys Knight & The Pips
Visions |
| SBIRD0010CD |
| Released on 22/02/10. For a time in the 1960s and 1970s, Gladys Knight & The Pips were clearly among the elite in the pop world, right up with the best groups of the era. Gladys Knight was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1944. In 1952 she won the Ted Mack Original Amateur Hour', a talent show on national television and by the age of nine she'd formed the first version of the Pips with her brother Bubba, plus cousins Their first hit happened in '61 with a cover of 'Every Beat Of My Heart' and in 1966, they switched from original label Vee-Jay to Motown and had a massive success with 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine', which became the fastest-selling single in Motown history up until that point. Over the next several years, the group had a string of hits and awards behind them, before joining the Buddha roster, which led to the biggest hit of their career in 1973, namely 'Midnight Train To Georgia'. Another label change in 1980 to Columbia, led in 1981 to the release of the album 'Touch' and to 'Visions' two years later which gave the group a number one r&b hit in America with 'Save The Overtime (For Me)'. Her performances throughout this album are nothing short of stunning. Listen to the way she handles 'Hero', with a bravura aplomb that really does indicate that she had a grasp of bringing the gospel approach to soul, while never sacrificing her sensuality. And 'Heaven sent' is tailor made for her vocals. When You're Far Away / Just Be My Lover / Save The Overtime (For Me) / Heaven Sent / Don't Make Me Run Away / Ain't No Greater Love / Seconds / You're Number One (In My Book) / Oh La De Da / Hero (Wind Beneath My Wings) | |

| Relesed 22/02/10. Carl Perkins was born into humble beginnings and spent his early years picking cotton but by his teens he was playing electric guitar and in a band with his brothers and was signed to Sun Records by Sam Phillips in 1954. From his Sun sessions came Blue Suede Shoes which reached the top of all the charts and became Sun Records first million seller. He was involved in a serious car crash on his way to a national V show which put him and his brother in hospital and nearly ended his career. His 1964 UK Tour saw him greeted as a conquering hero, playing to sold out houses and being particularly lauded by a young group called the Beatles, who played and recorded a number of his songs. Whole Lotta Shakin was recorded on June 3rd and 4th 1958 and On Top in 1969. Rare Bluegrass From Nashville: The 1960s |
| TBIRD0010CD |
| Released on 22/02/10. 1960’s Bluegrass from Nashville's Indie Labels The Spar recordings featured on this collection were recorded in 1966 (Spar LP 300 "The Bluegrass Sound Of Carl Story") and show Story and the Rambling Mountaineers returning to their straight bluegrass roots. Bill Monroe and Flatt & Scruggs had crossed over to college and folk festival crowds and Carl followed right behind them, becoming a fixture on the bluegrass festival circuit during the sixties, seventies and eighties. Very little is known of Mark Peek and the New Kentucky Travelers except that they recorded just this one song for the Spar label. "Dueling Banjos" was an enormous hit record for Eric Weissberg in 1972, having been featured in the film "Deliverance". This version was on the Spar/Plantation House LP "Dueling Banjos, Rocky Mountain High and the City Of New Orleans" by The Now Generation and quite possibly features Bobby Thompson (of Barefoot Jerry fame) on banjo. The remainder of the recordings featured on this compilation are from W.C. "Red" Wortham's Sur- Speed label. Red's recordings were for the grass roots rural bluegrass fans. Fiddler Earl McCollum recorded only three 45s in his career, all were for Sur- Speed, "If God Had Wanted Us On The Moon" achieved cult status. We can be thankful that there are recordings documenting this wonderful chapter in American musical history. Early Country Rock From Nashville |
| TBIRD0011CD |
| Released on 22/02/10. An interesting compilation of artists that recorded early country rock at Spar Records in Nashville in the 1960s. Nearly all of the Country sessions at Spar utilized the cream of the crop of young studio musicians working in Nashville during the 1960s. Some of the legendary names who participated were Mac Gayden, Wayne Moss, Kenny Buttrey, Norbert Putnam, Lloyd Green, Hargus "Pig" Robbins, Pete Drake and Charlie McCoy. These are the people that played on sessions with Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan ("Blonde On Blonde"), Neil Young, The Byrds ("Sweetheart Of The Rodeo"), Linda Ronstadt and went on to found the Area Code 615 band and Barefoot Jerry. The recording of "Almost To Nashville" (featuring Lloyd Green on steel guitar) gives a hint of greatness to come. Hal Kennedy recorded Country music for Spar but was better known as the lead singer with the Gospel group The Dixie Echoes. Jake & Josh were actually Jake Tullock and Josh Graves from Flatt & Scruggs' band, moonlighting as a duo. Mac Gayden's electric sitar on "Great Big Woman" and the subject matter of "Nervous Breakdown" are both quite adventurous for the day. This compilation focuses on the original Country Rock recordings released by the Spar label which still sounds fresh after all these years. It's high time that Spar's rockin' Country sides took their rightful place in the history of Nashville music, and this collection should help to shine a little light on some obscure, but nevertheless classic, old records. A Woman's Touch - Bobby Russell / I Ain't No Beatle - Jack White /Movin' Out, Movin' In – Jay Dee Pepper / 99 Ways - Bob Adams (Bobby & Bergen) / Johnny B. The Rip Chords
Hey Little Cobra And Other Hot Rod Hits / Three Window Coupe |
| TBIRD0012CD |
| The Rip Chords? For many, it brings to mind producer Terry Melcher (Doris Days on) and Bruce Johnston, who would go on to join the Beach Boys. But the real story is a lot more fascinating than merely talking about a collaboration between these two high profile talents. The band was started Ernie Bringas and Phil Stewart in 1957, landing a deal with the Columbia label in 1962. Melcher, then just 20 years old, was assigned to produce the duos first single in 63, titled Here I Stand, which reached number 51 on the national charts and was quickly followed by a second single, Gone. It was at this time, Johnston was brought in, Melcher had written a song called Hey Little Cobra with Carol Conners and Melcher decided to record this under the name of The Rip Chords, with only himself and Johnston on vocals. His lead vocal was outstanding with Johnson doing the falsetto and the single reached number four on the American charts in 1964, with an album quickly following titled Hey Little Cobra And Other Hot Rod Hits. This featured the voices of Melcher, Johnston and Stewart, although only the last named (together with Rotkin and Marcus) went out and did shows and TV appearances to promote the single and album. In the Summer of 64, the band had another hit with Three Window Coupe, written by Jan Berry (of Jan And Dean fame) and Roger Christian. Again, an album of the same title quickly followed, with Melcher and Johnston handling a lot of the vocals. The band had one more hit with One Piece Topless Bathing Suit, performed the song Red Hot Roadster in the movie A Swingin’ Summer (which also featured Raquel Welch and the Righteous Brothers) and well that was about it. What they’ve left behind is a real cameo of a great time for music and their role in the development of what became known as The California Sound should not be underestimated, as is proven in the enduring worth of these albums. | SHOUT62 |
| Brothers and Sisters we take as our text today Tony Heilbut s book The Gospel Sound , first published in 1972, acknowledged as the historical bible of the music genre that is the prime source and influence of soul music in particular, and many elements of pop/rock music, from singing preachers in storefront churches to the house-rocking quartets who took their audiences to religious frenzy. Two double-albums were compiled for Columbia by Mr Heilbut to illustrate his book, produced with the assistance of the great John Hammond. Shout! presents a newly compiled best of those releases, which brings this great music back to the congregation for the first time in almost two decades. This selection features the classic quartet stylings of the Pilgrim Travellers, the Dixie Hummingbirds , with the inspirational Ira Tucker, the harmonic jubilee delivery of the Golden Gate Quartet, the dynamic vocals of great gospel divas Mahalia Jackson, Bessie Griffin and Dorothy Love Coates, the gritty vocals and driving guitar of spiritual troubador Blind Willie Johnson, and the seminal vocal group styling of Mitchell's Christian Singers. Shout! has the blessing of Tony Helibut and quotes from his pivotal text with which this release is very much connected. Classix Nouveaux
The Liberty Singles Collection |
| CDMRED417 |
| Released on 18/01/10. Classix Nouveaux formed from the ashes of X Ray Spex when the band auditioned for a new front person in the Melody Maker after the sudden departure of their wild wailer Poly Styrene. The enigmatic Sal Solo was chosen by guitarist Jak Airport and drummer BP Hurding and with the addition of bassist Mik Sweeney from Sal’s previous band the News, a soon to be cult band was born. The band’s heavily made up, theatrical image led them to be quickly associated with the New Romantic movement as they filled the alternative dance floor with their synth-driven beats, though their sound was more guitar driven than that of their peers Japan, and Ultravox. After three successful previous Classix Nouveaux’s releases along with one Sal Solo album Cherry Red is thrilled to announce the Liberty Singles Collection. Featuring A and B sides some of which have never been on CD before, this is a must have for any fan of Classix Nouveaux, and a perfect starting point for anyone who has missed this criminally ignored band. Bossa nova - The New Way - was influenced by modern classical music (Villa-Lobos, Debussy), jazz and samba-canção. Gilberto brought an unprecedented guitar style and a hushed, understated form of vocal expression that defined the movement and changed the course of music history. In 1959 João Gilberto released Chega de saudade, the first bossa nova LP record and Brazilian music never looked back. Our edition features the original (long out of print) classic album in its entirety, supplemented by the impossibly rare EP of songs from the film Black Orpheus and recordings of some of the famous songs of Chega de saudade by contemporaries such as Elizete Cardoso, Os Cariocas, Alaide Costa, Norma Bengell and Bola Sete. .João Gilberto Chega De Saudade - Chega de saudade (No More Blues) / Lobo bobo (Foolish Wolf) / Brigas nunca mais (Fights, Never More) / Hô-bá-lá-lá / Saudade fez um samba (Saudade made a Samba) / Maria ninguém (Maria Nobody) / Desafinado (Off-Key) / Rosa morena (Brunette Rose) / Morena boca de ouro (Brunette with a Mouth of Gold) / Bim bom / Aos pés da cruz (At the Foot of the Cross) / É luxo só (It's Just a Luxury) João Gilberto Cantando As Musicás Do Film Orfeo Do Carnaval -A Felicidade (Happiness) / Manhã de carnaval (Morning of the Carnival) / 15. Serge Gainsbourg
Poet and Provocateur |
| ACMEM180CD |
| Released on 18/01/10. Part poet, part provocateur, Serge Gainsbourg was known outside France primarily for the heavy breathing masterpiece J'taime moi non plus (the only French song ever to top the British charts) but to those at home he stood one of the more potent cultural figures of post-war France. His poetry was compared to Rimbaud and Baudelaire, his morality to the Marquis de Sade. He was surely the only man ever to have written hit songs about the joys of incest, sodomy, motorcycles and cigarettes and to still be awarded the Chevalier Des Arts et Lettres, his country’s highest artistic honour. Poet and Provocateur comprises rare live and studio recordings by Serge, Juliette Greco's exquisite EP of Gainsbourg songs that did so much to establish his name, interpretations of some of his finest early songs by contemporaries such as Pia Colombo and Hugues Aufray, Gainsbourg's score for Jacques Doniol-Valcroze's film L'Eau a la Bouche (A Game for Six Lovers) and the soundtrack of Michel Boisrond's Voulez-vous danser avec moi? (Come Dance with Me) which saw Gainsbourg make his screen debut in a film which star red Brigitte Bardot, the biggest star in France, with whom he would soon so controversially collaborate. Joann Sfar's film biography, Serge Gainsbourg vie héroïque will be released on January 10 2010. Starring Eric Elmosnino as Gainsbourg, the producton has already been the source controversy due to the suicide of the actress Lucy Gordon who played Jane Birkin. | ACMEM500CD |
| Released on 18/01/10. Blueboy’s first album, originally released in 1992, will be reissued on El Records. In keeping with the Sarah tradition, the original album was an 8-track mini-album with no singles or previously / later released tracks, but it is re-released with addition of the band s first four singles and their B-sides as a 19-track album. All of this material has been unavailable, except for download, since around the time Sarah shut up shop in 1995.Blueboy were formed by lyricist and singer, Keith Girdler, and songwriter and guitarist, Paul Stewart in Reading in the early 1990s. Since meeting around a decade earlier, Paul and Keith had been in various bands together before Blueboy, and had sent previous demos to Sarah. However, it was the demo for Clearer, which was released in 1991 as their first single, which got them their deal. Whilst their initial releases were gentle and acoustic, they expanded into a full band, with bass, drums, keyboards and cello, and eventually including Harvey Williams on guitar. Their later albums will be reissued on EL Records, of which Keith and Paul were both huge fans, over the coming months. | ECLEC32173 |
| Released on 25/01/10. Cave Of Clear Light is a 3CD Anthology that tells the story of the Underground years of the Pye record label and its Progressive imprint Dawn Records. Often unfairly seen as a poor relation to the Progressive and Underground releases by major labels such as Decca, Harvest, Vertigo, Island and United Artists, Pye Records also released many albums and singles by artists who were at the forefront of the Underground rock explosion of the late 1960 s and early 1970 s.Cave Of Clear Light re-appraises the labels output and features tracks by artists such as Donovan, Status Quo, Man, Atomic Rooster and Fruupp, also including many rare tracks by highly collectable artists such as Jonesy, David Mcwilliams, Stray, Paul Brett’s Sage, Fire, Titus Groan, Demon Fuzz, Noir, Comus, Gravy Train, Writing On The Wall and many more. With an extensive book featuring information on all the artists featured and the story of Pye’s Progressive period and the birth of Dawn Records, this anthology joins the series of acclaimed compilations by Mark Powell such as Strangely St range, But Oddly Normal - Island anthology; Time Machine. - Vertigo anthology; Legend of a Mind - Decca / Deram anthology; A Breath of Fresh Air - Harvest anthology and Refugees - Charisma anthology to tell the story of a major label in transition during a momentous period of change for British popular music. | CRSEG008 |
| Released on 25/01/10. They may have been downgraded over the intervening years to a retrospectively-acclaimed, collector-type act, but at the time Skip Bifferty were genuine contenders: significant radio support for their singles, heavyweight management (courtesy of the notorious Don Arden), and afforded Next Big Thing status by the weekly pop papers.Pride of place goes to three previously unreleased recordings, all taken from the original master-tapes. Jesus Smith (The Other Side Of) is the band s semi-legendary, hitherto-lost debut studio recording, while there are two versions of Skizoid Revolution, a song that has previously only been available with a guest vocal from Alan Hull. As with all Skip Bifferty material, these far superior versions feature the soulful tones of the band s lead singer, the hugely underrated Graham Bell. The Sorrows
You’ve Got What I Want – The Essential Sorrows 1965-67 |
| CRSEG012 |
| Released on 25/01/10. When it came to tough, snarling, mod-into-freakbeat sounds, legendary mid-Sixties act the Sorrows had few peers. Formed in Coventry, the band was signed by producer/A&R man John Schroeder to the Piccadilly label in late 1964. In the space of little more than a year, they cut a superb album as well as a clutch of menacing, thrillingly essential 45s, including the iconic Take A Heart (the band s only chart success) and its equally incendiary follow-up, You’ve Got What I Want .Featuring a dazzling 16-page booklet that contains previously unpublished photos, new liner notes and quotes from band members Don Fardon and Wez Price, You’ve Got What I Want is nothing less than pure sonic overload from one of the most dynamic garage bands of the era... Mind Funk |
| IBIRD0006CD |
| Released on 25/01/10. 1991 saw the release, in chronological order, of Smashing Pumpkins Gish, Pearl Jam’s Ten and Nirvana’s Nevermind which would herald the arrival of a new musical force called grunge.Mind Funk were never a grunge band per se - but they did release this, their fine debut album on March 12, 1991, and with a more alternative frame of mind being prevalent in rock music at the time, after all, this is a story that pulls together seemingly disparate musical threads from Soundgarden, Nirvana, Celtic Frost, M.O.D. and Ministry. Obviously, given the timing of the release of their self-titled debut album, all eyes today fall on the shoulders of guitarist Jason Everman who had featured in both Nirvana and Soundgarden and whilst this did help garner press interest for Mind Funk, it did unfairly push them into the grunge arena. In truth, the band began life as Mind Fuck. Guitarist Louis Svitek had worked with fellow guitarist Jason Coppola in Chemical Waste, and the pair had worked with bassist John Monte in thrash crossover band M.O.D. Singer Pat Dubar from the straight-edge outfit Uniform Choice and drummer Reed. St. Mark, who had drummed with legendary avant-garde Swiss metallers Celtic Frost. This reissue of the bands still impressive debut album, plus three bonus tracks, invokes memories of a time in rock music when anything new and unconventional seemed possible. Cycle Sluts From Hell
Cycle Sluts From Hell |
| IBIRD0007CD |
| Released on 25/01/10. The Cycle Sluts From Hell, Satan's female shock troops, out to bind the unsuspecting moral majority in chains forged from the finest libidinous perversions, and drown them in a sea of foaming bourbon and drugs. They were four women who made the likes of Lita Ford and Doro Pesch seem like the flag bearers for the Doris Day Abstinence Guild. Queen Vixen, Venus Penis Crusher, Honey One Percenter and She-Fire Of Ice not only looked like the ultimate biker fantasy women, but had the voices to carry their attitude way beyond the belief that this was somehow a theatrical spoof. These girls were the real deal, and would probably smash a pool cue over the head of any male who leered or smirked the wrong way at them. The Sluts were backed by some of the hottest musicians around bassist Tom Von Doom, guitarists Chris Moffet, Pete 'Lord Roadkill' Lisa, Tom Schoonmaker and Ash Gray, with Scott DuBoys on drums (subsequently replaced on the album by Tony Price). Their self titled debut album also their sole record, released in 1992 and produced by Glen Robinson, who had produced the 1989 Voivod album Nothingface . Despite the considerable buzz surrounding the Cycle Sluts From Hell, they failed to set the rock scene ablaze, as they deserved to. The album captures the band's energy and highlights how good the songs are. Conqueress / By The Balls (Dirty Version) / Queen High Love / Dark Ships / I Wish You Were A Beer / Soultaker / E.R.K.S. The Guess Who
Wheatfield Soul / Share The Land / Canned Wheat |
| IBIRD30008CD |
| Released on 25/01/10. Wheatfield Soul became a collector’s item over the years. The hit These Eyes has the authority that the band repeated on chart songs down the line. What make Wheatfield Soul so sought after is inventive themes that found their way onto later albums. These Eyes remains timeless; it is the song that stands out as the masterpiece on this creative album.1969’s cleverly titled Canned Wheat introduced several of the bands most remembered songs and still sounds incredibly fresh, a product from the days of classic rock. Burt Cummings great rock & Roll voice keeps the most overdone Song fresh and Randy Bachman’s underrated guitar work always serving the song’ s needs. Recorded in the aftermath of Randy Bachman’s departure, Share The Land was a better album than anyone expected. It was the biggest selling original album in their career. Burton Cummings is in excellent voice and the new double lead guitar team of Kurt Winter and Greg Leskiw gave the band a greater range than they had before. The original album includes two numbers from earlier sessions, Palmyra and The Answer , featuring Randy Bachman on guitar. The Official Art Vandelay Tapes |
| CDLEM02 |
| Released on 17/01/10. This collection of out takes from the legendary Graham Parker is an introduction to his '81-96 catalogue. Parker started out as the quintessential angry young man, and was one of the most successful singer-songwriters to emerge from England's pub-rock scene of the early 1970's. Originally playing in pub rock groups around Morocco and Gibraltar, Parker began sending out demos in 1975. When Dave Robinson from Stiff records heard the tape, he got together a backing band called The Rumour for Parker and together they landed a contract with Mercury. With a more radio friendly catalogue his next album was another success, however Parker didn't stay with Electra and after a few more label moves including Atlantic and RCA he switched to the independent labels. The Official Art Vandelay album is an interesting mix of Graham Parkers music and will be followed by The Up Escalator with guest artists Bruce Springsteen! The Turner's father, John, ran a music shop and used his connections to get the band gigs and finally, in 1982, a contract with A & M.They released their debut album in 1983 as a trio. Lamb became disgruntled at what she perceived to be the domination of the Turners, quitting to form She. Recorded over the preceding 8 months as Gary Numan, The Human League, Ultravox, OMD laid down their foundations in Britain.North had progressed through playing CBGB’s with The Ramones and Talking Heads in Milk n Cookies, touring the UK during the Punk explosion in Neo, then retired in 1979 to New York with a couple of Kraftwerk LPs, a Korg synth, and drum machine, tucked under his arms. The resulting My Girlfriend’s Dead album and subsequent EP Rape Of Orchids , included here, were released in the US only. Major Uk labels reported back that electronic music was just a passing fad. In the US the promo video for the track Only Love Is Left Alive was shown on the first day of transmission of MTV, then on heavy rotation. The song remains a play-list regular today on New York radio stations such as WFMU. Songs From The Big Rock Candy |
| CRREV216 |
| Released on 11/01/10. Burl Icle Ivanhoe Ives (woo-hoo!) (14 June 1909 14 April 1995) was an Academy Award winning American actor and acclaimed folk singer and author. Ives always seemed slightly out of place in the 1940s New York folk scene, his pleasant voice and non-preachy manner making the traditional songs for which he was originally known into bona-fide chart hits. His radio show, "The Wayfaring Stranger", popularized song like Lavender Blue (his first hit, a folk song from the 17th century), Foggy Foggy Dew (an English/ Irish folk song), Blue Tail Fly (an old Civil War tune) and Big Rock Candy Mountain (an old hobo ditty), and they became part of many people's childhood memories. As an actor, Ives appeared on Broadway, and in movies such as East of Eden (1955); Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958); The Big Country (1958), for which he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor; Our Man in Havana (1959), and many others. His autobiography, The Wayfaring Stranger, was published in 1948. Frank Black of the Pixies is a huge fan of Ives according to Apple's iTunes Store. In his Celebrity Playlists , Black includes no fewer than 15 of Ives' hits. A must for all folk fans... The Big Rock Candy Mountain / Blue Tail Fly / I Know An Old Lady / Lavender Blue / On Top Of Ol' Smoky / The Fox / Aunt Rhody / Frankie And Johnny / Cowboy's Lament / Old Dan Tucker / Erie Canal / Darlin' Cory / Peter Gray / Sweet Betsy From Pike / Po' Boy / The Golden Vanity / Tam Pierce / Jesse James / The Eddystone Light / The Riddle Song / Turtle Dove / Lolly-Too-Dum / I'm Goin' Down The Road / Edward / The Foggy, Foggy Dew / Git Along Little Dogies / I Know Where I'm Going / I Know My Love / The Three Crows / Leather Winged Bat / Cotton-Eyed Joe / Wee Cooper O'fife / The Young Man Who Couldn’t Hoe Corn | |
Laura Nyro and Labella
Gonna Take A Miracle |
| CRREV296 |
| Released on 25/01/10. Our very favourite Laura Nyro album. But wait, you might say, our favourite album by a cult/hit songwriter of some renown is one composed entirely of covers! Why yes indeed...an album which has been described by Alan McGee as sounding "Like a prayer" is an album which can be looked at in so many different ways.... It can be seen as a prime example of the little known but big around these parts genre of "Girls together singing crazy" and by the way the witchiest record since "Iko Iko"... It can be seen as an exploration of Nyro's pop roots and a wistful look back at her love for early New York soul and Motown....and it can also be seen as a surprise collaboration with Labelle, caught between their 1960s Girl Group heyday and their soon-come hit-making odyssey into Sci-Fi soul/disco with Allan Toussaint... I Met Him On A Sunday / The Bells / Monkey Time/ Dancing In The Street / Desiree / You've Really Got A Hold On Me / Spanish Harlem / Jimmy Mack / The Wind / Nowhere To Run / It's Gonna Take A Miracle / Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing (live) /. (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman (Live) / O-O-H Child (Live) / Up On The Roof (Live) | |
Zalman Yanovsky
Alive and Well In Argentina |
| CRREV297 |
| Released on 25/01/10. When Zalman Yanovsky was controversially ousted from The Lovin Spoonfull in 1967, the fans took it hard...as both the only folkie to be a master of the electric guitar log before folk rock, and an arch humourist and mugger, Zally had been the most popular member of the band. Bizarrely, he and his replacement in the Spoonful, ex.MFQ-er Jerry Yester formed a production company, successfully working with artists such as Tim Buckley Then there was this sadly his only solo album, Alive and Well In Argentina was crafted by Zally and jerry as almost a deconstruction of pop, with odd covers of boyhood favourites and Zappaesque malarkey jostling with folkpop gems....a surreal composite of psychedelic pop and wry piss-taking, it remains a vital artifact of it's time and place....and in the evenings they were producing Happy/Sad...genius guys....we've added on the epochal non album single, Bonner/Gordon's As Long As You're Here...which has the album's whole intent squeezed into one radio friendly should-have-been-hit...wonderful! Raven In A Cage / Schtinckhausen / You Talk Too Much / Last Date / Little Bitty Pretty One / Alive And Well In Argentina / Brown To Blue / Priscilla Millionaira / I Almost Lost My Mind / Hip Toad | |
| ^top | | Rev-Ola Bandstand | Amos Milburn
In The 50s – Let’s Have A Party (The Aladdin Recordings) |
| CRBAND27 |
| Released on 11/01/10. Amos Milburn...an almost forgotten giant, with a decade of solid hits to his name. His cover of Will Bradley's Down the Road Apiece (1947), an early jump blues with a rocking Texas boogie beat that bordered on rock, was just one of his tunes ahead of its time. However, none really caught on until 1949 when seven of his singles got the attention of the R&B audience: Hold Me Baby and Chicken Shack Boogie landed numbers eight and nine on Billboard's survey of 1949's R&B Bestsellers. He became one of the leading performers on the Central Avenue scene. Among his best known songs was One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer and in 1950 Milburn's Bad, Bad, Whiskey reached the top of the R&B charts and began a string of drinking songs . However, there is no evidence that Milburn had a drinking problem! It was the rise of the very Rock n Roll which he had inspired which changed radio enough to make him passe in the later 1950s, and despite some amazing sides, and deals with Johnny Otis and even Motown, this giant had had his day. Here though are no less than 29 of his prime sides, every one a classic. The irony of track 29's title speaks for itself! I’m Gonna Tell My Mama / Sax Shack Boogie / Bad Bad Whiskey / Let's Rock A While / Tears, Tears, Tears / I Love You Anyway / Ain't Nothing Shaking / Just One More Drink / Flying Home / Thinkin' And Drinking / Long Long Day / Greyhound / I'm Still A Fool For You / Rock, Rock, Rock / One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer / Good Good Whiskey / Let Me Go Home Whiskey / Let's Have A Party / Milk And Water / I Done Done It /One, Two, Three Everybody / Vicious Vicious Vodka / House Party / Juice, Juice, Juice / Chicken Shack Boogie / Every Day Of The Week / Shake, Shake / Soft Pillow / We Teenagers Know What We Want | |

Sam Carr’s Delta Dukes
Live In Europe |
| SBIRD0005CD |
| Released on 25/01/10. Sam Carr is as close to royalty as you can get in the Blues Music world. He was born in Friar's Point, Mississippi in 1926, the son of legendary blues man Robert Nighthawk (AKA Robert Lee McCoy). The Delta Dukes; Sam Carr, John Weston and Dave Riley were the quintessential Mississppi Delta juke joint band. Sam Carr cut his teeth playing with his father then Sonny Boy Williamson before forming the Jelly Roll Kings with Frank Frost. In 1960 they recorded the classic "Boss Man" album for Sam Phillips, (of Sun Records fame). Their next record was produced by Elvis' guitarist Scotty Moore and yielded a hit with "My Back Scratcher". After Frank Frost s death in 1996, Sam put together a new band called The Delta Jukes and these live recordings are their earliest, recorded at the Lucerne Blues Festival in Switzerland in 2000. This is modern Mississippi Delta Blues at its finest. Sadly, John Weston passed away in 2005 and Sam Carr in September 2009. Moon Mullican signed with the Spar label in early 1966 and recorded the two LPs that make up this collection and are seeing their first digital release and their only reissue in the forty plus years since the records were first released. Both of these albums feature re-recordings of Mullican's "Columbus Stockade Blues", "I'll Sail My Ship Alone" (covered twice by Jerry Lee Lewis), "You Don't Have To Be A Baby To Cry", "Old Pipeliner" and standards like "Sweet Georgia Brown", but many of the songs are new material like "Mr. Honky Tonk Man". The Soundalike Kings Present Covers, Hits & Misses From The Vaults Of The Legendary Spar Records |
| TBIRD20005CD |
| Released on 25/01/10. Launched in the 1960’s The Spar Recording Company was best known as a sound-alike record company. They made the very best cover records in the business, in no small part thanks to the fabulous studio musicians and singers in Nashville at that time. If the original hit record had been recorded in Nashville, in many cases the Spar cover featured the same musicians as the original recording. The list of studio musicians used at Spar reads like a who’s who of the Nashville recording scene in the 1960s, including Boots Randolph, Mac Gayden, Wayne Moss, Charlie McCoy, Bill Pursell, Bob Moore, Norbert Putnam,David Briggs, Henry Strzelecki, Steve Bess, Kenny Buttrey, Hargus Pig Robbins, Jimmy Wilkerson and many more. These are the same people that played on recordings by Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, George Jones, Johnny Cash, Charlie Rich, Neil Young, Linda Ronstadt, Nancy Sinatra, Steve Miller, Joe Simon, Tony Joe White, The Monkees and too many others to list here. When Bobby Russell flubbed the third or fourth take of Elvis Presley’s "Devil In Disguise" the musicians started kidding him, telling him that Elvis got it in just two takes. Bobby replied, "Well.....Elvis had his whole life to learn to be Elvis and I'm expected to learn it in half an hour". And learn it he did.
