The Winkies - Winkies (The)

The Winkies
The Winkies were formed by Canadian-born Philip Rambow with former Holy Rollers guitarist Guy Humphreys, and the rhythm section of Brian Turrington (Bass Guitar) and Mike Desmaris (Drums). Their music and stage presence were a combination of the sound pub rock and visuals of glam rock clothing.   The Winkies caught the attention of former Roxy Music musician Brian Eno while he was finishing his debut solo album Here Come The Warm Jets. And he took The Winkies as his backing band in 1974, on his first and only solo tour.   After touring with Eno, the band signed with Chrysalis Records and began recording an album with Leo Lyons of Ten Years After, that included guests such as Chick Churchill and Eno. The album was never completed though and the band began aside with Guy Stevens in the producer’s chair and their self-titled debut album The Winkies appeared in 1975. Shortly after the release of this album, they disbanded.   Only ever released in Japan on CD, this much sought after album is now being re-issued with new sleeve notes and re-mastered sound.

Strange fruit
Strange Fruit' is a great undiscovered work of the acoustic rock / classic rock genres, cited by some as a minor masterpiece. In the late 60's Gary Farr made the transition from leader of R&B outfit The T-Bones to a noted singer-songwriter. Recording an album for Marmalade Records, Farr then signed to CBS Records in 1970, recording this sole album for the label. Sessions featured contributions from RICHARD THOMPSON on lead guitar and leading lights of the underground MIGHTY BABY. Unavailable on CD for many years, 'Strange Fruit' is a record made by an often overlooked singer-songwriter made available once more by Esoteric Recordings and is certain to appeal to all who adore acoustic music both melancholic and uplifting. The reissue also features the first ever CD appearance of the single edit of 'Revolution of the Season'. Our Price: £10.95

Beggin - The Sound Of Londons Mod/Club Scene
Members of Timebox went on to high profile music careers (with Patto, Babe Ruth, the Rutles, amongst many). Our contention here is that Timebox themselves were a vital act in their own right. Essentially intelligent, genre-bending late 60s British pop laced with a surreal sense of humour and regular flashes of maverick unpredictability.

Mod Jazz/ Pop outings and blue eyed soul populate the first half of our complete overview, with psychedelic nuggets and blasts of proto-hard rock (plus a few that defy categorisation) inflecting the second and all recorded within a two year span, with much of it unreleased at the time. They worked the clubs, moved with the times, and left a fascinating body of work for any 60's fan.

Thunder And Happiness, The Complete Albums 1975-76
Jabula brought South Africa’s music to the world a decade before Paul Simon’s Graceland.
Thunder And Happiness: The Complete Albums 1975-1976 anthologises their first two albums: Jabula and Thunder Into Our Hearts, all released on CD for the first time.
Formed in Britain by exiled apartheid-era musicians who had left South Africa in 1973, Jabula (Zulu for happiness) infused the sound of the Townships with jazz, creating a compelling rhythmic stew. Jabula’s music was accessible, compulsive and fresh.
Jabula were an important musical force. Mike Oldfield invited them to play on his Ommadawn and Incantations albums. Their leader Julian Bahula also played on Oldfield’s Amarok and Stevie Wonder’s Characters album. Jabula were the subject of the 1981 film Jabula – A Band in Exile.
The release of Thunder And Happiness: The Complete Albums 1975-1976 is significant, allowing this historic band to be heard again.
Bahula was previously with the legendary Malombo Jazzmen. After arriving in Britain he was also central to the ANC, and organised Nelson Mandela’s 65th birthday concert in 1983 at London’s Alexandra Palace (held while Mandela was still in jail).
In April 2012 South African President Jacob Zuma bestowed the National Order of Ikhamanga to Julian Bahula for his exceptional contributions to music and the arts, and the struggle for a free and democratic South Africa.

Press: "...their overall sound is a potent mix of tough township jive grooves, progressive rock and American funk." - Howard Male, The Independent on Sunday, 9/12/12
