Love, Poetry And Revolution - Various Artists

Love, Poetry And Revolution
Cherry Red’s dedicated UK psych imprint Grapefruit is proud to announce the release in October of the 3CD anthology Love, Poetry and Revolution: a journey through the British psychedelic and underground scenes 1966-1972. · Housed in a clambox with a lavishly annotated and illustrated 36 page booklet, this important release features much rare material, including previously unissued demo recordings by Tintern Abbey and Blossom Toes.

Various heavyweight underground bands (The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown, Hawkwind, The Deviants, etc) rub shoulders with acts who recorded some of the rarest, most valuable albums of the era (Forever Amber, Complex, Peter Howell & John Ferdinando), while the box also includes a number of subterranean bands - Middle Earth regulars Jade Hexagram, Neon Pearl, Respect and others – who failed to release anything during their lifetime. ·

Embracing psychedelic pop (The Mirage, Jason Crest, Shy Limbs, Crocheted Doughnut Ring etc), the burgeoning progressive rock scene (T2, Czar, Fat Mattress) and acid folk (the likes of Simon Finn and Mark Fry), Love, Poetry and Revolution draws on a number of catalogues, including Beacon (The Fut, Information, pre-Damned act Taiconderoga), the Vic Keary stable and various collector labels (Sunbeam, Acme, Tenth Planet/Wooden Hill) to give a fascinating, all-embracing overview of what was a tumultuous few years in British pop/rock history.

Return To Paradise: A History Of Exotica

Released on 20/09/10. Strange, Sultry and Seductive...fierce, fascinating and feverish - here are sounds to quicken the heart-beat; the tropical fantasy of a hidden world. A woman¹s voice calls, hypnotic and compelling; drums repeat the haunting command and the music weaves a spell of mystery.

From the early fifties, with the onset of international air travel, Exotica became a massively popular musical trend; making it possible for middleclass Americans to simulate an authentic travelogue experience - to India, Africa, Cuba, or the South Seas - in the comfort of their suburban homes.

This public looked to Les Baxter, Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman, Yma Sumac, Korla Pandit or Robert Drasnin to provide (in contrast to the prevailing rock and roll scene) a mystical combination of Oriental, African and Latin sounds, decorated with natural effects gathered from the sea, sky and forest.

Exotic music was originally conceived with Ravel's Bolero and Debussy¹s Pagodes. It left the classical world and entered pop through Les Baxter. In 1950 he created Voice of the Xtabay with four octave Peruvian singer Yma Sumac and a year later released the seminal work of exotica, his tone poem Ritual of the Savage (Le Sacre Du Sauvage).

Live At The Hurrah
To accompany our recent DVD release, we are pleased to announce the release of a the first ever full live album release to feature the Young Marble Giants, “Live At The Hurrah”. YMG formed in 1979 and were a three-piece from Cardiff, Wales consisting of Stuart Moxham (guitars, keyboards), his brother Phil (bass), and Alison Statton (voice). Their recording career lasted only two years but they garnered a loyal and devoted fan base that still exists to this day. They recorded one classic album, “Colossal Youth”, for Rough Trade Records and performed two short tours of the Europe and the U.S. in 1980. On their return from the U.S. tensions in the band led to their split. The name and legend of the band has continued to flourish, with websites devoted to them and releases of rare material from their back catalogue. “Live At The Hurrah” captures the band in full flight at New York’s Hurrah Club during that legendary 1980 U.S. tour, making this a unique release for all YMG fans. Amongst the tracks featured are Independent chart top ten hit “Final Days”. Our Price: £9.95

The View from the Edge
Released 18/05/09. The View from the Edge is about the rolke of percussion in modern music and is a sequel to el's previous Varese edition, The Complete Works of Edgard Varese Volume 1 (ACMEM125CD). An important restoration of the composer's earliest recordings, the edition was greeted by great critical enthusiasm and sold especially healthily on export.

Varese also has a strong base in America, mostly by virtue of the association with Frank Zappa, who for years championed the work of this genius who today is regarded now as "The Father Of Electronic Music”; a man that has been described as the Leonardo da Vinci of modern music

‘Arcana’ and ‘Ionisation’ are the composer's key works; two of the most important of the twentieth century. Leonard Bernstein's historic seventeen minute Arcana with The New York Philharmonic is amongst the rarest Varese recordings The American Percussion Society's vigorous recording of ‘Ionisation’ has been inexplicably out of print for five decades

The Oliver Messiaen pieces are his first official recordings ever, dating from 1946 & 1947, and orginally released on 78 by Pathe. Both are beautifully performed by a young Yvonne Loriod.

Morricone High – The Trippier Side Of The Morricone Genius
Morricone High' showcases the composer's work for Italian psychedelic and art movies of the late sixties & early seventies. Ennio Morricone's beautiful melodies are decorated by Edda Dell'Orso's spacious wordless vocals; 'Scusi, Facciamo L'Amore?' (with the harmony singers I Cantori Moderni) (about the travails of a Neapolitan gigolo), 'Le Foto Proibite Di Una Signora Per Bene' (sex and crime Italian style) 'Veruschka' (model on a psychedelic trip) and 'La Donna Invisible' (arty Mediterranean love triangle) are all sublime examples of the composer in his pomp. Eventually the layers of sensuality give way to the atonal but no less refined, 'Notte E Bambole' from the weird, dreamlike 'The Short Night Of The Glass Dolls' (about catalepsy in art deco Prague) and the equally intense '1970' for Dario Argento's Giallo 'Il Gatto A Nove Code' starring Karl Malden as a blind writer of crossword puzzles who stumbles on a murderous plot. Made In England
Long established as one of the minor classics of the British psychedelic pop genre, the Bulldog Breed album Made In England was recorded in mid-1969 but not released by Deram Nova until the beginning of the following year - by which time its thrilling Spirit-of-'67 mod/psych sound and commitment to hook-laden, sub-three minute songs was fatally out of sync with the self-indulgence and bombast of the nascent progressive rock era.
