Swans Way were
formed in Birmingham in 1982 with Maggie De Monde (vocals, percussion), Rick P.
Jones (double bass)and vocalist Robert Shaw. The band were seen as part of the
"new jazz" scene with the likes of Sade, Carmel and Blue Rondo a La
Turk. They released a single on indie label Exit International and then signed
to Phonogram. Swans Way's 2nd single ‘Soul Train’ was a top 20 hit with three
further singles following on. The album 'The Fugitive Kind' was released and
charted but it was more a critical rather than a commercial success with the
band's experimental approach and sound being their lasting legacy to the sound
of their day.
