The First Chapter - Live - Mission

The First Chapter - Live
The Mission, (or Mission UK as they are known in the USA ) formed in 1986 from the ashes of recently dissolved band Sisters of Mercy. They have crafted their own brand atmospheric Gothic Rock ever since. The line-up has changed many a time as the band has been resurrected through the years but the enigmatic lead singer Wayne Hussey has always remained constant. A virtuoso guitar player (though not playing lead guitar for The Mission preferring to focus his talent on vocals). On Wednesday 27th of February 2008, The Mission took to the stage to perform a memorable and momentous gig, performing The First Chapter live in it’s entirety. The First Chapter was originally released 1987 and includes the singles, Serpents Kiss and Garden of Delights. It is no small feat to play an album in its absoluteness, and The Mission perform the task with splendour putting to bed the naysayer’s of their undeniable talent and importance.

Love In The Afternoon
Recently hailed by Record Collector magazine as the finest vocalist you've never heard, Claire Hamill has enjoyed a long and varied career as one of Britain's finest female singer songwriters. Signing to Island Records in 1971 at the age of 17, she made a series of wonderful albums in the 1970's. The singer Eva Cassidy covered Claire's 'You Take My Breath Away' and Claire's influence extends to artists such as Kate Bush. In the 1980's Claire's music embraced the ambient movement and following work with artists such as Jon & Vangelis, Claire recorded the wonderful album Voices, a record featuring solely vocal sounds that topped the UK New Age Chart and was the soundtrack to BBC TVs Domesday series. She followed this in 1988 with the equally excellent song based Love In The Afternoon, featuring the classic Trees . Our Price: £10.95

Raging And Dancing The Anthology
Minimal Compacts Stat ik Dancin was dance-inflected post punk that revelled in the band s Israeli origins. Stilla dance floor filler, Statik Dancin' is timeless, yet still aclassic of the era.  Back in 1981 there was no such thing as world music, but Minimal Compact infused their music with the feel of their home country, even though they were based in Belgium and signed to Brussels Crammed Discs.  Raging and Dancing is the first career spanning Minimal Compact anthology. Band-approved with liner notes that include an interview with founder member Samy Birnbach, it takes them from 1981 to 1987, when the band called it a day after issuing their meaning-laden overhaul of Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song.  Along the way, they worked with members of Wire, Tuxedomoon, John Fryer (producer of The CocteauTwins and M/A/R/R/S). Their covers were designed by luminaries like Neville Brody and Eno/David Sylvian designer Russell Mills. Their When I Go featured on the soundtrack to Wim Wenders' Wings Of Desire. Minimal Compact were integral to the era.  Minimal Compact were post-punk at its most exotic and danceable. Raging and Dancing is the definitive collection. Our Price: £9.95

Matching Mole:2cd Expanded Edition
Esoteric Recordings are proud to announce the release of a Deluxe 2CD Expanded edition of Matching Mole’s self-titled debut album. Formed in 1971, Matching Mole featured former SOFT MACHINE drummer ROBERT WYATT, former CARAVAN keyboard player DAVE SINCLAIR, guitarist PHIL MILLER, bassist BILL McCORMICK with guest keyboard player DAVE MacRAE. Recorded between December 1971 and February 1972, "MATCHING MOLE” was a wonderful debut that included tracks such as ‘O Caroline’, ‘Signed Curtain’ and ‘Part of the Dance’. This Esoteric Recordings edition has been newly re-mastered from the original master tapes and is expanded to include five previously unreleased studio session alternate takes, the single versions of ‘O Caroline’ and ‘Signed Curtain’, along with two BBC Radio One sessions from 1972. The booklet restores all original artwork and includes and essay by Sid Smith.

The self titled debut, at times close to a Wyatt solo effort, veers from the nakedly honest break-up song 'O Caroline' to instrumental jazz-rock, via the pataphysical and postmodern 'Signed Curtain'. (4/5*)
