Walk Under Ladders - Joan Armatrading

Walk Under Ladders
Released on 25/01/10. Eighth LP from legendary UK singer songwriter, originally issued in 1981. Second album in her late 70s / early 80s newfound pop direction, produced by the legendary Steve Lillywhite.

Now with three bonus tracks previously only issued on vinyl as part of the Weakness In Me EP.

The seventies produced a string of great albums, mostly tinged with an acoustic, jazzy, even folky flavour, until, in the late 70's and early 80's she found her way into a more pop orientated sound, which is the point at which this collection finds her. Produced by the ever reliable Steve Lillywhite, "Walk Under Ladders" was Joan's eighth LP and comfortably reached the UK's Top Ten, and peaking at number 6 on its release in 1981. A set of solid, catchy and artistically respectable songs, this album established the artist as a versatile figurehead at the beginning of the decade.

Skyscraping: Expanded Edition

· ABC has its roots in the band Vice Versa, a Sheffield band formed in 1977 by Stephen Singleton and Mark White. They founded their own label, Neutron Records, releasing the EP Music 4. Martin Fry, who wrote the fanzine Modern Drugs, interviewed Vice Versa and shortly afterwards they asked him to join as synthesizer player. Fry accepted and by 1980 the band had evolved into ABC, with Fry becoming lead vocalist.

· The album was released in 1997, as a homage to lead singer Martin Fry's several musical heroes, including David Bowie, Roxy Music and The Sex Pistols.

· The line-up of ABC then consisting of Martin Fry, Glenn Gregory of Heaven 17 and Keith Lowndes, the album was met with positive reviews from critics rather than broad commercial success.

· This re-issue - done in conjunction with the band -contains liner notes by Daryl Easlea who talked extensively to the members of the band about the creation of the record.

· It contains a newly re-mastered album as well as a disc of B-Sides from the singles released at the time.

·       Released in 1980 "Dreams” was the second and most successful of Grace Slick’s four solo albums.
·       Considering Grace’s popularity as vocalist with Jefferson Airplane and Starship, it is surprising that this fantastic album only charted at No. 32 in the United States and No. 28 in the UK.
·       With epic productions and arrangements by Ron Frangipane this album is something special and was nominated for a Grammy award.
·       Grace herself rates "Dreams” as her favourite album and regrets not touring at the time, to promote it.
·       The edited single version of the title song is added as a bonus track.
·       Grace Slick’s fabulous contralto voice soars throughout the album.  "Dreams” is a much under-rated part of her legacy – don’t let it get away again!

As One (Expanded Edition)

KOOL & THE GANG need no introduction. They were the top selling Soul group of the 70’s and 80’s having sold over 70 million albums worldwide and have received countless awards. Without them we would not have such great hits as ‘Summer Madness,’ ‘Get Down On It,’ ‘Celebration’ and who could forget that slammin’ funk monster that features so heavily in Quentin Tarantino’s cult flick - Pulp Fiction; ‘Jungle Boogie.’

1982 would see Kool & The Gang release AS ONE, their 16th studio album. AS ONE went on to become a U.S. Certified Gold album in November of 1982 helped by its top 30 position on the U.S. charts, and top 50 in the U.K. (spending 10 weeks in the U.K. album chart), while also climbing all the way to #5 on the U.S. R&B album chart. The legendary Grammy Award winning pianist, Eumir Deodato would once again take hold of production duties, assisted by Kool & The Gang.

The first single release was ‘Big Fun,’ laden with a killer funky bass line and an equally impressive brass section; the single returned the group to the R&B top ten and UK top twenty. ‘Let’s Go Dancing (Ooh La La La)’ made the most noise on the chart front, earning an impressive top 30 position on the U.S. Pop charts like its predecessor and top 10 spots in both the U.S. R&B and U.K. charts. ‘Hi De Hi, Hi De Ho’ was also received well in the U.K. climbing to #29 on the U.K. charts while the third U.S. single, up-tempo, funky jam ‘Street Kids,’ became a further R&B chart hit.

Other notable tracks include the smooth and soulful album closer ‘Think It Over’ and the similarly paced title track.

BBR is proud to present AS ONE in fully expanded and newly re-mastered glory, complete with extensive liner notes including new interviews, and added bonus material.

Save Me: Expanded Edition
•    SILVER CONVENTION started life in Munich in 1974 as Silver Bird Convention when German songwriting and producing partners Michael Kunzte and Sylvester Levay released the single ‘Save Me’ on Jupiter Records, enlisting three session singers to take care of the minimal vocal refrain on the track. With the "Bird” soon dropped from the acts name ‘Save Me’ became an international Disco hit charting at #30 in the U.K. and across the board in the U.S. at #10 Disco and #103 Pop, heralding the start of continued success throughout the 70's.

•    With a settled line up of Ramona Wolf, Penny McLean and Linda G. Thompson as Silver Convention the group released this, their eponymously titled debut LP (titled "Save Me” outside of Germany) to great acclaim as the Euro-Disco sound made waves across the world with Giorgio Morodor, also based in Munich, surfing the highest.

•    "Save Me” opens the album with its propulsive rhythms, sweeping horns and strings, yearning vocals and soulful sax solos. Follow up single "Fly, Robin, Fly,” a minimal mid-tempo dancer with a very satisfying piano motif and intricate strings, gained heavy rotation on U.S. radio as well as in the clubs, eclipsing the success of ‘Save Me’ by hitting the top spot across the Billboard R&B, Disco and Pop charts and again charting top 30 in the U.K., as well as taking home the Grammy for best R&B Instrumental Performance. Other stand out tracks are the single ‘Always Another Girl’ , ‘Tiger Baby’ UK #41 and ‘I Like It’ which show off the lush, string-laden Euro sound with Levay's arrangements tipping the hat to the likes of Gamble & Huff and Barry White.

•    Reaching #1 and #10 on the U.S. R&B and Pop album charts respectively SILVER CONVENTION (Save Me) has become a very influential album and is rightly regarded as a dance classic in many circles.

•    BBR are proud to present this newly remastered and repackaged expanded edition.
