Big Girls Don’t Cry (Expanded Edition) - Weather Girls

Big Girls Don’t Cry (Expanded Edition)

THE WEATHER GIRLS were Martha Wash and Izora Rhodes. The duo started out in the gospel group NOW (News of the World) before becoming backup singers with Sylvester in the late seventies. They were then named TWO TONS OF FUN and had a run of Disco hits on the Fantasy label.

The group then signed with Columbia Records and changed their name to The Weather Girls in 1982. The newly named duo’s first single IT'S RAINING MEN was quickly a massive club hit in the US, topping the Dance/Disco chart in 1982. Their debut album SUCCESS featured the hit single and was a US chart hit. Despite only being a minor pop hit at home, IT’S RAINING MEN became an international hit and eventually made number 2 in the UK in 1984. Since then it has become a massive anthem.

1985 saw the second album release by the duo under the name, The Weather Girls. BIG GIRLS DON’T CRY is another very well crafted pop/dance record for the duo, the recording of which was guided by producers Hank Medress and Jeff Kent.

BIG GIRLS DON’T CRY provided the dance floor hit ‘No One Could Ever Love You More Than Me,’ which peaked at #26 on the US dance charts and is featured here in extended form. ‘Well-A-Wiggy’ also charted making a respectable #76 on the US R&B charts and #107 Pop. Other notable tracks are the title track itself and an interesting cover of Canned Heat’s ‘Down On The Corner.’

Cherry Pop is very proud to present BIG GIRLS DON’T CRY, expertly re-mastered and complete with liner notes and bonus tracks. It is essential listening for all Hi-NRG, Disco and ‘80s Pop fans out there!

All By Myself / Stay With Me
Four- time Grammy winning Regina Belle’s debut album, ‘All By Myself’ released  in 1987, included an impressive five hit singles "Show Me the Way", "So Many Tears", "How Could You Do It to Me", "Please Be Mine" and "You Got the Love".
The record reached number 85 on the US charts, and number 14 in the r&B charts.

‘Stay With Me’ (1989) took things up a notch or two. The record got to number 63 in the mainstream US charts, and also topped the r&b charts, proving that she was a coming force. In fact, both the songs ‘Baby Come To Me’ and ‘Make It Like It Was’ were to make it to the top of the r&b singles chart, such was her growing power and potency. There were also two more singles here which cracked the top ten in the r&b chart "All I Want Is Forever" and "What Goes Around".

Barely a few months after its release, ‘Stay With Me’ was certified gold in America, having passed 500,000 sales

Ji
London-born Junior Giscombe started his musical career working with popular British black music band Linx between 1980-82. A one-off 1980 single enjoyed some popularity in clubs in the UK and France, prompting then Phonogram A&R executive Roger Ames to track him down, resulting in a contract with the company in the UK and releases on Mercury Records.
Of the first two tracks he recorded for the label, Ames picked ‘Mama Used To Say’ and within months, Junior had landed a Top 30 pop and No. 2 R&B hit single in the U.S., becoming the first British black music artist to appear on the popular American TV show, "Soul Train” and essentially the first such artist to achieve a major chart breakthrough in the U.S. Now a classic anthem, ‘Mama Used To Say’ was also a Top 10 UK hit and prompted Junior to complete his first album, "Ji”.
With members of Linx among the musicians playing on the album, "Ji” (named after the Chinese ‘year of the rooster’) included a second hit single, ‘Too Late,’ another Top 10 R&B hit in the U.S. and Top 20 pop single in the U.K.
Ji has only been available as a (now out-of-print) Japanese CD since its original release. This expanded edition consists of the original British version of the classic album and seven bonus tracks including two rare non-LP singles (‘In Words’ and ‘Fame’) and mixes of ‘Mama’ and a vault-discovered alternate version of ‘Too Late.’
Notes by SoulMusic Records’ founder David Nathan include extensive 2012 quotes from Junior, an active performer now celebrating his 30th year as a recording artist.

Burning Bridges
A long overdue reissue of synth-pop pioneers Naked Eyes' 1983 debut album "Burning Bridges" plus bonus tracks.
"Burning Bridges” featured singles that charted both sides of the Atlantic. Their cover of the Bacharach & David's classic ‘Always Something There To Remind Me’ peaked at #8 and its follow up ‘Promises Promises’ reached 11 - both in the U.S. Hot 100 chart.
This special edition contains 12 tracks from the original album plus six essential bonus tracks.

The bonus material features two 12" versions of ‘Promises Promises’ including Jellybean's extended version featuring his - then unknown - girlfriend Madonna on backing vocals. Tony Mansfield's American Remix of ‘Always Something There To Remind Me’, the US 7" remix of ‘Promises Promises’ and two b/sides ‘Pit Stop’ and ‘Sweet Poison’.
The sleeve notes have been written by Michael Silvester who talked at length with Pete Byrne about the naked Eyes story. The CD booklet features many of the original sleeves and a full UK discography.

T-Connection (Expanded Edition)

T-Connection, formed in 1975, were a Funk/Disco group who hailed from reportedly one of the funkiest places on the planet, Nassau, in the Bahamas. Looking to further their chances of success the group leader, Theophilus "T” Coakley (vocals, guitar and keyboards) persuaded the other members of the group, his brother Kirkwood Coakley (bass, drums), David Mackey (guitars) and Anthony Flowers (drums, percussion) to take the short flight to Miami, Florida shortly after the birth of the group. Shortly after arriving T-Connection signed with dash Records, an off-shoot of the very successful Miami based T.K. Disco imprint.

In 1977 the group broke through with the first single from their second Dash album "Magic” with "Do What You Wanna Do” which reached #1 on the Billboard Disco chart and #15 R&B.

The following year, having expanded to a six-piece, T-Connection released this, their eponymous third LP which kept the group in the limelight reaching #20 R&B and #51 Pop on the US album charts. This great set of funky tracks shows off the group’s versatility to its fullest incorporating Funk, Disco, Rock and their Caribbean roots.

The first single from T-CONNECTION is arguably the strongest on the album; "At Midnight” is a solid party funk groove with a strong afro/latin feel incorporating timbales and steel drums into the rhythm. "At Midnight” peaked at #3 Disco, #32 R&B and #56 Pop in early ’79 and has a bonus version featured here and the single reached #52 Pop on the UK charts. The second single ‘Saturday Night’ reached #28 R&B in the US, and #41 in the UK. Another highlight is ‘Don’t Stop The Music,’ another very strong groove which isn’t too far removed from The Commodores sound of that era.

BBR is delighted to bring you this newly re-mastered and fully expanded edition of T-CONNECTION.

Complete with extensive liner notes and added bonus content this BBR re-master is a must have for all Funk, Soul, Disco and R&B fans out there!
