Maid In England - Divine

Maid In England
DIVINE (born Harris Glenn Milstead) was a drag performer who came to prominence as a cult movie star appearing in several John Waters films such as Pink Flamingos, Polyester and Hairspray.
In 1979 Divine released the dance single "Born To Be Cheap”, and although the track didn’t make a huge impact it started a new chapter in his career where he released a succession of camp and fun dance hits which filled the floors of predominantly gay club nights throughout the 80’s.
The compilation MAID IN ENGLAND, released in 1988, was the all-round performers fourth and last LP and features several of Divine’s Hi-NRG and Disco hits including the 1984 UK top 20 hit ‘You Think You’re A Man’ as well as ‘I’m So Beautiful’ (both produced by Stock/Aitken/Waterman) and re-mixes of ‘Walk Like A Man’ and Sam Cooke’s ‘Twistin’ The Night Away’.
DIVINE is hugely respected cult figure in both the film and music world and still a great inspiration to many people due to his exuberant persona and performances.
Cherry Pop is very proud to present MAID IN ENGLAND, expertly remastered and complete with liner notes and bonus tracks.
MAID IN ENGLAND is essential listening for all Hi-NRG, Dance, Disco and Pop fans out there!

Broadcast
It has been Cutting Crew's fate to have enjoyed a hugely successful career that will always be remembered for one song, namely their enormous, multi-million selling international hit (I Just) Died In Your Arms.

Having graced every wedding reception in the civilised world, the track has notched up over three million radio plays in North America alone, and forms the centrepiece of this, the band's debut album.

Recorded in both the United States and the UK, the album is a superior example of ambitious, guitar driven mid 80s pop-rock, with extremely strong songwriting and the classic production and ideals of that era present throughout. The record also spawned another huge hit in the shape of I've Been In Love Before , a track which went Top Ten in America and itself boasts over three million radio plays worldwide. Unsurprisingly, the album was also a massive hit, even earning the band a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist in 1987, and still proves a strong listen twenty three years later.

The Scattering
The second album released by the group, The Scattering represents Cutting Crew's most collaborative effort. Under pressure from their American record company to produce hit singles of the scale of (I Just) Died In Your Arms Tonight and I've Been In Love Before , the band consolidated and produced what those in the know consider to be their most enjoyable album.

Sadly, a number of business and personal problems meant the record arrived a year later than planned, and the musical landscape had changed in that time, leaving this great package somewhat ignored at the time of its release and, to some degree, undiscovered until now.

Featuring a more direct sound than The Broadcast , and being far less reliant on grandiose production and more on the immediacy of its songs, The Scattering showcases a maturing band who have mastered a sound somewhere between chart friendly AOR and American tinged arena rock.

"Orchestrated by one of the music industry’s most revered remixers and producers, Phil Harding, ‘Club Mixes of the ‘80s’ showcases his 30+ career spanning years at the musical wheel.”

(Annecarlini.com)

"Sound engineer Phil Harding, a former member of the PWL team, takes us inside of the PWL studios, where no-name artists like Rick Astley and Klie Minogue were advocated to levels of recognition incomprehensible to the artist struggling to pay their dues in hopes of reaching similar fame and success.”

O'Chi Deluxe Edition
Tottenham-born O Chi Brown was discovered by a Trojan Records producer at the age of 17. She made her name in the early 80s with a string of Lovers Rock covers, ranging from Bob Marley to "Auld Lang Syne", "A Whiter Shade of Pale" and "Unchained Melody". In 1985, the single Why Can t We Be Friends? marked a move towards a more upbeat pop sound and secured O Chi a deal with Magnet Records for an album to be recorded at Pete Waterman s newly-established PWL Studios. "O chi" was followed in 1987 by a second Magnet LP, "Light The Night", O chi s last album to date.

Original CD copies of "O chi" are amongst the most sought-after of all PWL-related releases and often change hands for three-figure sums. Now the album becomes the latest in a long line of Hit Factory classics to be reissued on Cherry Pop.

The Five Star story began in 1983 when the children of reggae musician Buster Pearson decided to form their own pop group. Under their father's watchful managerial eye, they signed to his own label Tent Records. Their debut album "Luxury Of Life" was released in August 1985 and peaked at #12 in the album charts. Their second album, the #1 hit "Silk & Steel" followed in August 1986 and became triple platinum. In the 1980s the band recorded 21 hit singles, 11 of them top 20, and 4 original albums followed by a Greatest Hits album in 1989. The band, likened predictably to the Jackson 5 were one of the leading UK pop acts of the decade.
