Live at Oxford

NEWLY REMASTERED & EXPANDED EDITION CD OF THIS CLASSIC 1979 LIVE RECORDING BY GORDON GILTRAP & HIS BAND
NEWLY REMASTERED FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES
BOOKLET WITH FULLY RESTORED ARTWORK & ESSAY

ESOTERIC RECORDINGS are pleased to announce the release of a newly remastered and expanded edition of the classic album "LIVE AT OXFORD” by GORDON GILTRAP. For over forty years Gordon has enjoyed the well-deserved reputation as one of Britain’s greatest guitar players. He made his first recordings in the 1960s as folk artist, but by 1976 he had crossed into the Progressive Rock genre and signed to the newly formed Electric Records imprint. He recorded three albums for the label; "VISIONARY”, "PERILOUS JOURNEY” (featuring the hit single "Heartsong”) and "FEAR OF THE DARK.
"LIVE AT OXFORD” was recorded by the RAK Mobile studio at Oxford Polytechnic in March 1979, and the album captured Gordon Giltrap and his band in fine form. Joining Gordon on acoustic and electric guitars was a line-up of JOHN GUSTAFSON (bass), ROD EDWARDS (keyboards), SHIRLIE RODEN (keyboards, percussion, vocals) and IAN MOSLEY (drums).
This Esoteric Recordings edition is newly remastered from the original tapes and also features a lavishly illustrated booklet with new essay and interview with Gordon Giltrap.

Annie Haslam
Best known as vocalist for prog-rockers Renaissance. Annie Haslam came from a musical family, her father was an amateur singer and comedian and her brother Michael was a mid 60s rock'n'roller. She studied as a fashion designer at University which is where she first started to sing and then studied under opera singer Sybil Knight, before in late 1970 answering an advert in Melody Maker to become Renaissance's new vocalist.

As lead vocalist for Renaissance Annie Haslam became one of the most highly regarded vocalists. Her crystalline, five octave soprano remained the groups focal point throughout the remainder of their career. While still fronting the band she made her solo debut album Annie in Wonderland with Roy Wood producing in 1977. "Still Life” followed in 1985 followed by this self titled album released in 1985, after which she relocated to the US.

This is a hauntingly beautiful and personal collection with gorgeous musical texture and dazzling performances.

Duffy
60's blues fusion musician, writer and singer Duffy Power finally achieved a stand alone LP release in 1973 when an eponymous album hit the racks on the GSF label.

Produced by Adrian Millar, as one of several on going projects in a Production deal set up with partner Andrew Loog Oldham, the Duffy Power LP became to date the only purpose recorded album Duffy has had released in his career.

For this fine collection of Duffy originals Millar brought in a stellar cast of musicians, plus backing singers Dana Gillespie, Pam McKenna, Alexis Korner, and Del Newman for string arrangements, to help bring the songs to life.

The album was well received and Millar continued to be a fan of Duffy's songs, offering a second LP. Sessions were begun with a regular backing band called CWT ( see also the RATS (RPM 322) where they backed singer / songwriter David Kubinec). Sadly only three tracks survive today as yet again another Duffy album project remained on the shelf.

As a follow up to the two successful Anthologies of Duffy's 60's recordings RPM is proud to make available again for the first time in 30 years, and for the first time on CD, the 1973 LP Duffy Power, plus the three recordings from the aborted follow up album. The package includes very personal song by song annotation from Duffy, and more unseen photos from Duffy's archive.

B-H-Y
At first glance the letters B-H-Y may not seem like much, but a little scratch at the surface would reveal three names of some of the most forward thinking, innovative and talented musicians of their time and beyond – Ronnie Baker, Norman Harris and Earl Young.
Baker-Harris-Young, these three names are synonymous with Philly Soul and Disco and with good reason for no three people have had more input into shaping and defining disco as Baker, Harris and Young.
Earl Young, a highly talented drummer, was founder and leader of The Trammps along with band mate Ronnie Baker. Young is widely considered the innovator of the Disco style of drumming favouring extensive use of the hi-hat, which led to his recordings being favoured by DJs across the globe and along with Baker and Harris, the trio have become widely recognized as the founders of the disco sound.
As individuals Baker, Harris and Young were involved in every part of the burgeoning Philly Soul scene with each musician performing at Philadelphia International Records playing on numerous Gamble & Huff arrangements. As the formation of The Salsoul Orchestra came to fruition Baker-Harris-Young played an instrumental part in providing the musical direction and helping to sculpt the unique and instantly recognizable Salsoul brand that we all know and love.
BBR brings you the only album to ever feature Baker-Harris-Young as this Disco super-group showcasing the amazing talent of each musician. Featuring such hits as Handle Me With Love And Care, Marathon Dancer and I Just Want To Funk (With You).
Lovingly remastered and fully expanded, complete with extensive liner notes and added bonus content this BBR Remaster is a must have for any Soul, Funk, Disco, R&B, Philly Soul and Salsoul fans out there!

Discotheque
HERBIE MANN (born Herbert Jay Solomon) was one of Jazz music’s most prolific performers and innovators excelling predominantly on flute, but also tenor saxophone, clarinet and bass clarinet. Throughout the 50’s and 60’s Mann played in many groups exploring the boundaries of Jazz by absorbing Afro-Latin themes and recording and touring throughout the world. During this time he was able to nurture some of the greatest Jazz musicians as his sidemen, most notably Willie Bobo, Chick Corea, Roy Ayers and David Newman.
In the 70’s Mann extended his repertoire further by incorporating rock, pop, reggae and disco into his sound, which included this 1975 offering on Atlantic Records, DISCOTHEQUE. The album boasts a number of great jazzy grooves that show off Mann’s incredible dexterity on the flute and employs his vast experience to its full extent. DISCOTHEQUE was received very well in Jazz, R&B, Pop and Disco markets on its release achieving #5, #19 and #27 on the Billboard Jazz, R&B and Pop album charts respectively.
The albums one and only single was an instrumental cover of ‘Hi-Jack,’ which was originally recorded by Latin influenced Funk group Barrabas in 1974, and again confirmed the wide appeal that Mann enjoyed as it charted at #14 Pop, #24 R&B and an incredible #1 on Billboards Disco Action chart as the track lit up dance floors across the USA. Other notable tracks are the self-penned ‘High Above The Andes,’ showing off Mann’s love of the Latin groove, and a gorgeous rendition of Stevie Wonders ‘Bird Of Beauty.’ This edition also features the non-album B-side ‘Orient Express’ and the original unedited version of ‘Hi-Jack’.
BBR is very proud to bring you DISCOTHEQUE, completely re-mastered and repackaged complete with extensive liner notes and extended bonus content. DISCOTHEQUE is a must have for all (Latin) Jazz, Funk and Dance/Disco fans out there!
