Tap Turns on the Water – The CCS Story 2CD
A BRAND NEW ANTHOLOGY BY THE LEGENDARY C.C.S. FEATURING THEIR COMPLETE RECORDINGS
NEWLY REMASTERED FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES
BOOKLET WITH FULLY RESTORED ARTWORK & ESSAY
Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the release of a brand new 2CD deluxe anthology of the complete recordings by the legendary C.C.S.
Formed in 1970, C.C.S. (Collective Consciousness Society) was the brainchild of musician and arranger John Cameron, guitarist Alexis Korner (the father of British Blues) and producer MIckie Most. The group was initially conceived as a recording band only, but following the success of their legendary cover version of Led Zeppelin’s "Whole Lotta Love” (used as the theme for "Top of the Pops” for many years) and "Tap Turns on the Water”, the band also undertook live work.
C.C.S. featured the cream of jazz and blues talent such as flautist Harold McNair, bass players Herbie Flowers and Spike Heatley, sax players Tony Coe and Ron Ross, trumpet players Henry Lowther, Kenny Wheeler and Harold Beckett and drummers Barry Morgan and Tony Carr.
Between 1970 and 1973 C.C.S. released three albums and seven singles for RAK Records, with one album and four singles all reaching the UK Top Forty.
This Esoteric Recordings release has been newly remastered from the original master tapes and features all of the band’s recordings for RAK Records. The set also features an illustrated booklet with new essay.

I've Got The Cure
By 1984, powerhouse vocalist Stephanie Mills had achieved consistent hit-making status in the U.S. thanks to nine albums and a slew of hit singles that had established the former Broadway star of ‘The Wiz’ as a potent and dynamic recording artist and live performer.
Released in September 1984, I’VE GOT THE CURE, Stephanie’s third (and final) album for Casablanca Records became a best-seller thanks to now-classic soul and dance smash and club favourite, ‘The Medicine Song’ which became a Top 30 UK hit and a Top 10 US R&B hit.
Produced by master musician and funk meister George Duke with additional production by David ‘Hawk’ Wolinski (formerly of the group Rufus), I’VE GOT THE CURE fused the techno-funk rhythms of the day with Stephanie’s high-energy vocals.
This SoulMusic Records’ expanded edition includes three bonus tracks including a six-minute-plus Mark Berry 12” mix of ‘The Medicine Song.’ Other standouts on the album (a Top 10 R&B album in the US) include ‘Edge Of The Razor,’ ‘Rough Trade’ and the highlight ballads ‘Give It Half A Chance’ and ‘Everlasting Love.’
Includes notes by renowned UK writer Charles Waring with quotes from producer George Duke.

A Life In Music 2CD
Ravi Shankar, who died aged 92, in December 2012, was the musical visionary who thanks to the cultural influences of his family, the advantages of a disciplined classical background and a heady sixties association with George Harrison and The Beatles, established the sitar and the raga into western consciousness. He was thus the first performer and composer to bridge the musical gap between India and the west.
Ravi Shankar is already considered to have been one of the greatest musicians of the twentieth century.
Ravi's first musical ventures were as a child, appearing in his brother Uday's dance company in America and France. In his teens he was apprenticed to the sarod master, Allauddin Khan under who's demanding tutelage he would inherit the great tradition of Indian classical music.
By the time his first met George Harrison and Paul McCartney in 1966, Shankar had given recitals with Khan's son, the sarodist, Ali Akbar Khan, served as musical director of All India Radio's first National Orchestra, and been sent to all points on cultural tours by the Indian government. He had composed elegant film themes for Satyajit Ray's Apu Trilogy, and taught and befriended the jazz musicians John Coltrane and Don Ellis.
Ravi met the Beatles at a point when the Fab Four were looking to expand their musical language and to make deeper artistic statements. Legend has it that they had already been introduced to Ravi's music by Byrds guitarist Roger McGuinn at an LSD party in Los Angeles and indeed they dabbled with the sitar on the 1965 hit, Norwegian Wood. On meeting Ravi Shankar, George Harrison determined to take the instrument seriously, soon journeying to meet Ravi in India for a period of intensive tuition. There by the banks of the Dal Lake in Srinagar, the guitarist was inspired to write Within You Without You for the album, Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Beatles' tribute to Ravi Shankar.
The flower-power generation were beguiled by Ravi. He appeared at the
Monterey and Woodstock Festivals, and at the Concert for Bangledesh in New York in 1971 and made no attempt attempt to conceal his appreciation of the adulation, "Though I had been performing all over the world since 1954, my association with George attracted a whole young generation to sitar and to me from the mid-1960s. Even though I didn't make any record jamming with him or any other pop or rock star, I was treated like a superstar, being the Beatle George's guru.”
The recordings featured here are likely those that turned the The Beatles
on to Ravi. They were made between 1956 and 1962 and for all the success that followed they are arguably the pinnacle of his recorded artistry.

Merciless
Released in 1983, MERCILESS was the second of the three albums that powerhouse vocalist Stephanie Mills recorded for Casablanca and preceeded "I’ve Got The Cure”(reissued as an expanded edition by SoulMusic Records in 2013).
The New York-born singer had already achieved consistent hit-making status in the U.S. thanks to the best-selling albums and a slew of hit singles that had established the former Broadway star of ‘The Wiz’ as a potent and dynamic recording artist and live performer.
The production of MERCILESS was supervised by famed music man Phil Ramone and industry mogul Charles Koppelman, with sessions handled by the team of David Wolfert and Gary Klein (the team behind The Four Tops’ early ‘80s hit, ‘When She Was My Girl’). The album included ‘My Body,’ a song written especially for Stephanie by Luther Vandross; her ultra-soulful cover of Prince’s ‘How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore?’ (a US Top 20 R&B hit); and the humour-filled ‘His Name Is Michael,’ co-written by the singer and featuring one of her background vocalists at the time, soul singer Peggi Blu.
Out of print for many years on CD, this SoulMusic Records’ expanded edition includes two bonus tracks – a 12” club mix of ‘Pilot Error’ (also a US Top 20 R&B hit single) and ‘Hold Me Close to You’ (from the soundtrack of the Tom Cruise film, "All The Right Moves”) along with liner notes by renowned UK writer Charles Waring including quotes from producer Wolfert and guitarist Michael Sembello who played on sessions for the album.

MFSB
M.F.S.B. (Mother Father Sister Brother) was the house band for Philadelphia International Records and worked very closely with the production team of Gamble & Huff. They backed up groups such as Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, The O’Jays, The Stylistics, The Spinners, Wilson Pickett and Billy Paul and are probably best known in their own right for providing the theme music for the legendary TV show Soul Train with ‘T.S.O.P. (The Sound Of Philadelphia)’. With the rise of the Philly soul sound at the beginning of the '70s, business was booming at GambleandHuff's Philadelphia International imprint and as a result M.F.S.B. were kept very busy in the studio providing backing for the aforementioned artists and leaving little time for the groups own recording sessions. It wasn’t until 1973 that the group had a chance to record material in its own name and released their self-titled debut album to high acclaim later that same year. MFSB features extended Funk-Soul-Jazz work-outs as on the seven-minute cover of Curtis Mayfield’s ‘Freddie's Dead’ that opens the set. The group also re-interpreted Sly Stone's ‘Family Affair’ to great effect while emphasising the flute as the driving force for their version of their label mates The O’Jays ‘Back Stabbers’ R&B chart topper from the previous year. The lush Disco/Pop sounds that informed the majority of the group’s later recordings, both in their own right and as the PIR house band, are featured on the other notable tracks on the album, in particular "Poinciana" which also features jazz-blues piano and guitar interjecting the soaring strings. ‘Something For Nothing’ (sampled by Groove Armada) also fits that description with a beautiful string led section that leads to an incredible motif on the horns which blasts through at just the right time, propelling the track forward. BBR is very proud to present MFSB, fully re-mastered and complete with extensive liner notes and bonus tracks. MFSB is a must for all R&B, Soul, Funk and Jazz fans out there!

Life 2CD
Life’s eponymous album, issued in 1970, is one of the most sought-after Swedish progressive albums.
The album describes the cycle of love in life ; it boasts tight, melodic songs underpinned by tough drums and lacerating guitars. The trio were supplemented by psychedelic-flavoured string arrangements.
Although recorded in and released in Swedish, 800 copies were manufactured in 1971 of an English-language version of the album for the export market. RPM International’s reissue brings them together for the first time and adds the tracks from Life's non-album singles.
Life was produced by Anders Henriksson, fresh from just having completed the legendary prog album by Quatermass at Abbey Road. Before that, Henriksson had been the long-term producer of Sweden's Tages
Issued with the cooperation of EMI Sweden, RPM International’s reissue of the Life album includes input from band member Anders Nordh.
Specially remastered from EMI Sweden’s archived master tapes
The Swedish-language version of the album – the original version – has never previously been reissued, and makes up Disc 1 plus the bonus singles.
This is the first-ever CD reissue of the English-language version of the album outside Sweden, and here makes up Disc 2 . There are notable track time differences between many of the English language versions and the Swedish language versions.
