Direct To Disc - FM

Direct To Disc
NEWLY REMASTERED EDITION OF THE RARE 1978 ALBUM BY CANADIAN PROGRESSIVE ROCK BAND FM
BOOKLET WITH FULLY RESTORED ARTWORK & ESSAY
Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the release of a remastered edition of the 1978 mini-album by the Canadian Progressive Rock group FM, "Direct to Disc”.
The band began life in 1976 with CAMERON HAWKINS (Synthesisers, Bass, Vocals) and NASH THE SLASH (Jeff Plewman) (Electric Violin, Mandolin, Vocals) coming together as a duo, making an appearance on national TV in Canada in the Summer of 1976. By March 1977 FM became a trio with the addition of MARTIN DELLER on Drums. The Canadian Broadcasting Company offered to release the band’s debut album, "Black Noise” on the CBC label later that year. By the end of the year Nash the Slash had been replaced by BEN MINK on Electric Violin and Mandolin in time for the sessions for "Direct to Disc”, an album that featured one track per side and was recorded directly to a master disc from which records were pressed, rather than from a master tape.
This mid-priced Esoteric Recordings release is the first time "Direct to Disc” has been issued in Europe and has been newly remastered and includes an illustrated booklet and a new essay.

Single Factor
Unlike many bands whose careers had begun in the 1970 s, CAMEL continued to enjoy much success in the1980 s, producing fine studio albums such as The Single Factor . The album saw Andrew Latimer assemble an impressive array of musicians to record under the CAMEL moniker, including original GENESIS guitarist ANTHONY PHILLIPS, FRANCIS MONKMAN, SIMON PHILLIPS, DAVID PATON and also saw PETER BARDENS guest on the track Sasquatch . Unavailable on CD for many years, this Esoteric Recordings reissue has been re-mastered from the original master tapes and includes rare edited version of You Are the One as a bonus track.

Night music
Darryl Way was founder member of the legendary Curved Air, a group that brought Ways strident electric violin playing to the fore on a string of hit albums. In 1973, Way formed Wolf, a progressive outfit featuring guitarist John Etheridge, bassist Dek Messecar (later in Caravan) and drummer Ian Mosley (now in Marillion). The music was a heady mixture of styles and secured the band a contract with Deccas Deram label. Night Music was the final album in the Wolf trilogy and perhaps the finest. With the band augmented by former IF vocalist John Hodgkinson, the album is a lost classic of 70'srock. Our Price: £10.95

Wheatfield Soul / Share The Land / Canned Wheat
Wheatfield Soul became a collector's item over the years. The hit These Eyes has the authority that the band repeated on chart songs down the line. What make Wheatfield Soul so sought after is inventive themes that found their way onto later albums. These Eyes remains timeless; it is the song that stands out as the masterpiece on this creative album.

1969's cleverly titled Canned Wheat introduced several of the bands most remembered songs and still sounds incredibly fresh, a product from the days of classic rock. Burt Cummings great rock & Roll voice keeps the most overdone Song fresh and Randy Bachman's underrated guitar work always serving the song' s needs.

Recorded in the aftermath of Randy Bachman's departure, Share The Land was a better album than anyone expected. It was the biggest selling original album in their career. Burton Cummings is in excellent voice and the new double lead guitar team of Kurt Winter and Greg Leskiw gave the band a greater range than they had before. The original album includes two numbers from earlier sessions, Palmyra and The Answer , featuring Randy Bachman on guitar.

Half Past Midnight: The Staccatos and Beyond

Having released two LPs as The Staccatos, Ottawa, Canada’s FIVE MAN ELECTRICAL BAND launched onto the scene in 1968 with this criminally underrated, psychedelically tinged pop gem.

Reminiscent of The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield and other like-minded bands, Five Man Electrical Band developed into one of Canada’s best-known groups, and their Capitol 45 of ‘Half Past Midnight’ sold over 25,000 copies--in Canada alone!

Led by LES EMMERSON, Five Man Electrical Band is today best known for their 1971 anti-establishment anthem ‘Signs.’ The Billboard # 3 single went on to sell over a million and a half copies.

This first-ever CD issue of their long-out-of-print Capitol LP is supplemented by rare Staccatos 45s, none of which have ever been issued on CD.

The 16-page colour booklet also includes rare, unpublished photos and comprehensive liner notes that feature the participation of original band members.

Not Fragile / Four Wheel Drive
Bachman–Turner Overdrive are a Canadian rock group from Canada, that had a series of hit albums and singles in the 1970s, selling over 7 million albums in that decade alone. Their 1970s catalogue included five Top 40 albums and six Top 40 singles. The band has sold nearly 30 million albums worldwide, Many of their songs, including ‘Let It Ride’, ‘You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet’, ‘Takin' Care of Business’, ‘Hey You’ and ‘Roll On Down the Highway’ still receive play on FM classic rock stations.

Not Fragile is the bands third album and was released in 1974. The title is thought to be a response to Yes' Fragile. The style has been described as a cross between Mountain and early ZZ Top. The arrival of Blair Thornton (replacing Tim Bachman) gave the band a true second lead guitar to pair with Randy Bachman, and dual-guitar solos are prominent features. It proved to be the group's most popular album, and is the only BTO album to have reached #1 on the US Pop Album charts. ‘Roll On Down The Highway’ and ‘You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet’ were hit singles.

PRESS

"BTO are best known for their rock anthem You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet, but its nine-song parent album, Not Fragile, has many other highlights.” – Tim Jones, Record Collector, June 2012
