Epic Forest
Though it made little impact on its original release in 1972, Rare Bird’s “Epic Forest” has since been widely acclaimed as a classic of the pre-punk era: a unique album that fuses the emotional reach of classical music with the harmonies of Sixties pop, yet without ever succumbing to the excesses of the period. In the whole history of rock, only two bands have ever achieved any degree of prominence with a line-up that included two keyboards players and no guitarist, Rare Bird and Greenslade. The original Rare Bird, formed in 1969 comprised of organist (and principal composer) Graham Field, electric pianist Dave Kaffinettti, vocalist Steve Gould and drummer Mark Ashton and it was this line-up that made an immediate impression with their eponymous debut, which was also the debut of Charisma records. Its successor ‘As Your Mind Flies By’ was equally a success, with the band also making Billboard magazines Top Ten New Bands Of The Year while ‘Sympathy’ reached the UK Top 30. It was an ever bigger hit over in Europe more, particularly France where it was a huge Summer hit and became the disco-smooch soundtrack of choice for a generation! Yet with Rare Bird’s course for greater things seemingly well set, it came as a something of a shock to fans when Field upped and left to form the short lived Fields. This would result in a change of direction that would surprise all! Much of the classical tendencies went with Field, alongside the addition of second lead vocalist/guitarist Andy ‘Ced’ Curtis and Gold’s decision to take up the axe resulted in a sound that owed more to the lush harmonies of Harmony Grass and the duelling guitars of Wishbone Ash than ELP or Yes. When any band re-invents itself quite so comprehensively there is always a price to pay in the terms of those fans that cleave the earlier style. Those who had claimed them for the Prog-Rock movement felt especially betrayed by the shift. Yet to anyone without such narrowly defined loyalties, ‘Epic Forest’ has clearly weathered the decades better than either of its two predecessors. In purely commercial terms it failed to capitalise on the success of Rare Bird’s first two albums yet it contained no shortage of songs that would enable the band to cement their reputation as a storming live act with songs that afforded Gould and Curtis scope to dovetail their guitar to thrilling effect. ‘Epic Forest’ stands as one of the most inspired and individual albums of an oft-derided period, while Rare Bird are remembered as one of the handful of bands who found a genuinely distinctive way of fusing the harmonic languages of Sixties pop and classical music without ever resorting to the empty flourishes and pointless virtuosity that so discredited Prog-Rock and finally brought the whole edifice crashing down in 1976. As Your Mind Flies By
Rare Bird are perhaps best remembered for having the distinction of being the first act to be released on Tony Stratton Smith's gloriously eclectic label Charisma records (also the home of GENESIS, THE NICE and VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR to name but a few) and for their excellent 1970 hit single 'Sympathy'. Like fellow future Charisma stable mates Van Der Graaf Generator, Rare Bird was formed around the principle of keyboard dominated progressive rock which eschewed the use of guitars. Following the success of their debut album and single ('Sympathy'), the band recorded this classic album in the Summer of 1970. 'As Your Mind Flies By' featured the epic 'Flight', a legendary piece which dominated the albums second side. An excellent work, the album met with much success, with Billboard magazine in America declaring Rare Bird to be in the top ten best new acts of the year. Our Price: £10.95

Nimbus, The Vertigo Years Anthology 2CD
2 CD ANTHOLOGY BY THE CLASSIC SCOTTISH PROGRESSIVE ROCK GROUP BEGGARS OPERA
18 TRACKS REMASTERED FROM THE ORIGINAL TAPES
DRAWN FROM THE BAND’S FOUR ALBUMS RECORDED FOR THE LEGENDARY VERTIGO LABEL BETWEEN 1970 & 1973
BOOKLET WITH FULLY RESTORED ARTWORK & ESSAY

Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce a 2CD ANTHOLOGY by the classic Scottish Progressive Rock group BEGGARS OPERA. Drawing on material from the band’s first four albums, recorded for the legendary Vertigo label, "NIMBUS” features 27 of the band’s best tracks.
Formed in Glasgow in 1969 with a line-up of RICKY GARDINER (Guitar, Vocals), ALAN PARK (Keyboards), MARTIN GRIFFITHS (Vocals), MARSHALL ERSKINE (Bass, Flute) and RAYMOND WILSON (Drums), the band signed to the newly established progressive arm of Philips Records, Vertigo, in 1970. Their debut album, "ACT ONE” gained some success in Europe with tracks such as ‘Poet and Peasant’ and ‘Passacagalia’. A successful European hit single, ‘SARABANDE’, was followed by the album "WATERS OF CHANGE”, arguably their best and most successful album, and a line-up change that saw GORDON SELLAR replace MARSHALL ERSKINE on bass, and VIRGINIA SCOTT join the group on Mellotron. The record included the classic ‘Time Machine’, along with the memorable ‘Silver Peacock’ and ‘I’ve No Idea’.
"PATHFINDER” from 1972 was another classic album and featured a wonderful cover of Jim Webb’s ‘MacArthur Park’ along with ‘The Witch’ and ‘Hobo’. The band’s final album for Vertigo, 1973’s "GET YOUR DOG OFF ME” saw further line-up changes, but included a fine cover of Mason Williams’ ‘CLASSICAL GAS’ and saw further European success for the band.
This anthology is a fine tribute to an inspiring band and has been newly re-mastered from the original master tapes, and features a booklet with new essay.

BOOKLET WITH FULLY RESTORED ARTWORK, RARE PHOTOGRAPHS & ESSAY

Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce a 2CD ANTHOLOGY by the legendary Progressive Rock group CRESSIDA. One of the finest groups to sign to the legendary VERTIGO label in 1969, CRESSIDA’s unique Progressive Rock style earned them a loyal fan base in the early 1970s, with their legend growing over the ensuing decades and their followers growing, with notable aficionados including MICHEAL AKERFELDT of the band OPETH. The roots of Cressida were sown in March 1968, when guitarist John Heyworth answered an advertisement in Melody Maker, and later travelled to London to join The Dominators. With vocalist Angus Cullen he settled down to some serious writing, eventually welcoming bassist Kevin McCarthy and drummer Iain Clark to the fold and now calling themselves Charge. In 1969, shortly after returning from a German tour, the band's organist Lol Coker decided to leave, and moved back to Liverpool to marry his Swiss girlfriend and take over his father's business. He had stayed just long enough to play on the band's first demo, which got them a recording contract with Vertigo Records. Peter Jennings then joined. At this point the band settled on the name Cressida. Their first gigs as Cressida were in Germany, including the Star-Club in Hamburg sharing the bill with Colosseum and East Of Eden, in the Autumn of 1969.
The band’s self-titled debut album was recorded at Wessex Studios with Ossie Byrne producing, and was one of the earliest releases on Vertigo. Cressida went through a difficult phase when Heyworth was forced to leave in early 1970. He was replaced by John Culley. The new line-up recorded Cressida's second LP, Asylum, later in 1970 (again with Byrne producing, and with orchestral arrangements by Graeme Hall), but it was released pos-thumously in 1971, the band having broken up in September 1970. Noted jazz flautist Harold McNair guested on the song "Lisa" from the album. Heyworth sadly died in January 2010, but in 2011, three of the four surviving original members of the band, Angus Cullen, Iain Clark, and Kevin McCarthy got together again with Peter Jennings. This anthology has been compiled by the group themselves and is a fine tribute to an inspiring band and has been newly re-mastered from the original master tapes, and features a booklet with new essay.

Velvet Mountain 2CD
NEW REMASTERED 2 CD ANTHOLOGY OF THE COMPLETE UNITED ARTISTS RECORDINGS BY COCHISE
REMASTERED FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES
BOOKLET WITH FULLY RESTORED ARTWORK & ESSAY
Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the release of a newly remastered anthology featuring the entire recorded output by the classic British band COCHISE.
Cochise are unsung heroes of British rock of the early 70s. Formed in 1969, the band featured the talents of legendary Pedal Steel Guitar player B.J. Cole, along with Stewart Brown (Vocals, Guitar), Mick Grabham (Lead guitar), Rick Wills (Bass) and John "Willie” Wilson (Drums). The band signed to the UK division of United Artists in 1970, releasing their self-titled debut (with legendary sleeve designed by Hipgnosis) the same year. Over the next two years they recorded two further albums, "Swallow Tales” (which featured guest Steve Marriott) and "So Far” (featuring Roy Otemro on drums). Cochise produced fine music, with influences ranging from rock to Americana, and failed to make a commercial impact at the time. The calibre of the musicians came to be realised following the demise of the band, with B.J. Cole becoming a famed session musician, Mick Grabham joining Procol Harum, Rick Wills performing with Roxy Music, Small Faces and David Gilmour before joining Foreigner and Willie Wilson joining Quiver and later performing with David Gilmour.
This anthology has been newly remastered from the original master tapes and features an illustrated booklet with new essay.
