Antonio Carlos Jobim
Antonio Carlos Jobim : Antonio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Floriano Bonfá
Antonio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Floriano Bonfá
acmem97cd

Antonio Carlos (Tom) Jobim is the biggest name in Brazilian music. His composition 'The Girl from Ipanema' with 'Yesterday' are the most popular song of all time and it is THE number that defines Bossa Nova (though Jobim wrote two dozen other songs that are intrinsic to the genre). Jobim and the virtuoso Brazilian guitarist Luiz Bonfa were (with Joao Gilberto) the architects of Bossa Nova; overseeing the transition of traditional samba song to the new form and our collection covers those years of transition.

Our set includes Jobim songs played by Bonfa and vice versa. It includes vintage domestic hits written either by Jobim or by both men and as a major feature also includes the entire score of the 1956 'Orpheus of the Carnival' stage play (written by Tom Jobim and the poet Vinicius de Morais). This was the blueprint for the famous film 'Black Orpheus' which two years later swept all before it at the Cannes Film festival and put Bossa Nova on the world map.

Our set captures the flavour of fifties Brazil, when in arts and culture and sport the country was really emerging.

Antonio Carlos Jobim : Sinfonia Do Rio De Janeiro
Sinfonia Do Rio De Janeiro
acmem75cd

Antonio Carlos Jobim was the artchitect of Bossa Nova, the writer of "The Girl from Ipanema" and many of the other Bossa standards. One of the 20th century's most gifted songwriters. A figure as symbolic of Brazil as Gershwin is of America or as Lennon & McCartney are of Britain. Influenced by Chopin and George Gershwin, Jobim brought a refinement to Brazilian music in the first half of the fifties and this compilation showcases his brilliant, early recordings including "Teresa of the Beach" a number one hit for Dick Farney and Lucio Alvesand the long original "Sinfonia Do Rio de Janeiro", a suite of ballads and sambas evoking the sun and sea and describing the beauties of Rio in those times.

These historic and valuable recordings have never previously been released outside of Brazil. Tom Jobim has sold literally millions of records around the world. He is actually one of the ten most recorded popular composers of all time. Recorded a big album with Frank Sinatra in 1967 that was second only for sales to "Sgnt Pepper". Jobim features in every aspect of the development of the nation’s music. His popularity is such that on his death the president of Brazil named Rio’s international airport after Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Antonio Carlos Jobim : The Music Of
The Music Of
acmem181cd

Released on 22/02/10. The Music of Antonio Carlos Jobim combines rare Brazilian recordings by the pioneers of bossa nova to document the vital first year of the genre. Beginning with João Gilberto's Desafinado, that introduced the world to this exciting new style, so simple, yet so shockingly sensual.

In addition to Gilberto, the programme comprises six absolutely essential cuts from Silvia Telles, perhaps the finest interpreter of Jobim's compositions and important contributions from the virtuoso guitarists Luiz Bonfa and Bola Sete, the organist Walter Wanderley and amongst others the Brazilian Sinatra, Dick Farney.

We have also included the Jobim compositions from the film Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus), the success of which did so much to bring bossa nova to world attention, including a historic recording of A Felicidade by the star of the movie, Marpessa Dawn. It is a musical snapshot of Rio de Janeiro in 1959.

Antonio Carlos Jobim : The Birth Of Bossa - Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius De Moraes
The Birth Of Bossa - Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius De Moraes
acmem163cd

Our edition comprises all of the key seminal 1958 vintage Bossa-Nova recordings including, the two minutes that changed the world - Joao Gilberto’s Chega de saudade. We also highlight Elizete Cardoso’s long out of print album Canção do Amor Demais which features both Joao Gilberto and Tom Jobim in its entirety and there are outstanding and impossibly scarce performances by some famous protagonists including Luiz Bonfa, Os Cariocas, Sylvia Telles, Laurindo Almeida, Agostinho dos Santos and we close with an old 78 in the spirit of the aesthetic by the great Brazilian master-guitarist Garoto

Almost all Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto titles remain in print internationally which is testament to their enduring popularity.

The Birth of Bossa covers important early territory that has not been well-documented so far on CD and will nicely compliment any Bossa Nova collection.
