The Brazilian Scene

          • The centrepiece of The Brazilian Scene is Ze Maria's much sought-after LP,  Todo Azul. The organist is a darker version of Walter Wanderley with an eerie, reverberated sound. The set is at least a stylish mix of jazz samba and bossa standards from the songbooks of Tom Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes and Carlos Lyra, but the mystique surrounding the album must surely be attributed to the presence of seventeen-year-old Jorge Ben

Caetano Veloso affirmed that "Jorge Ben was not only the first great black composer since bossa nova, but more importantly, he was also the first to make his blackness a stylistic determinant." Associated with both bossa nova and Tropicalia, and the first man to play sambas on an electric guitar, on Todo Azul Jorge Ben contributes his first professional recordings; impressive versions of Por Causa de Você Menina and his signature tune, the propulsive Mas Que Nada, his first chart-topper in Brazil, and a monster hit for Sergio Mendes, a song that has been recorded no less than two hundred times.

Brazilian Scene also includes early recordings by another prominent Tropicalist, Gilberto Gil, songs from a fascinating 4 track EP originally released on JS records of Bahia. Gil defies easy classification. Over a long career, he has remained faithful to the musical diversity that was central to the creative principles of Tropicalia, that would be labeled 'cultural cannibalism'; samba, frevo, Jovem Guarda, choro, bolero, Anglo-American pop and rock an d avant-garde art music.

Some other key features of this edition are the delicious performances of One Note Samba and Consolacao by Tom Jobim and Baden Powell with Herbie Mann, Radames Gnattali's exquisite Sonatina for Flute and Guitar, performed by Laurindo Almeida and Martin Ruderman.

Heitor Villa-Lobos was a prophet of eclecticism and world music and ballet suite Uirapuru depicts the sounds of the Amazon forest. Complex, colourful and full of mystery

Finally, The Little Train of the Brazilian Countryman (O trenzinho do caipira) is the subtitle for the Toccata movement that concludes an orchestral suite written by Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos in 1930, titled Bachianas brasileiras No. 2. The subtitle refers to the local trains in the small communities of the Brazilian interior, the noises of which are imitated in the composition.

Art And Voices
Os Cariocas, a fresh new sound from Brazil the first vocal quartet blending bossa-nova rhythms and melodies with modern jazz harmonies Quincy Jones. Os Cariocas were formed in 1942 by brothers Ismael Neto and Severino Filho, and distinguished by their ambitious and elaborate vocal arrangements for four or five voices, that combined polyphony and rhythmic effects. They became the most representative vocal group of bossa nova after their 1957 recording of "Chega de Saudade"; being one of the first recordings of this Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes masterpiece that would eventually be the one that started it all for João Gilberto, the song that would change forever Brazil's musical landscape. Its dazzling arrangement apart, the Os Cariocas version is noteable for the appearance of Gilberto himself on guitar. Because their guitarist Badeco couldn t duplicate the bossa beat, João volunteered to sit in at the recording and play anonymously. For Os Cariocas, the bossa nova phase was their second one, lasting between 1957 and 1967, when the group was disbanded. Their first phase included two decades broadcasting for Radio Nacional do Rio de Janeiro, and their 1948 debuts "Nova Ilusão" and "Adeus América" (later rerecorded by João Gilberto and remaining one of his classics), on which they mock American musical institutions of the day.

Brasilia - Sinfonia da Alvorada
In 1958, Juscelino Kubitschek, president of Brazil, asked Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes to compose a symphonic suite to be used at the opening ceremony of Brasilia, a city, designed by the architect Oscar Niemeyer, that was being built in the state of Goias in the middle of the country and which would be inaugurated as the nation's new capital in April 1960. Niemeyer's vision was one of history's boldest, most dramatic architectural statements that for Brazil was meant to represent a new vision for the future. Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moreas were two of the principle artchitects of bossa nova. The pair famously co-wrote The Girl From Ipanema and Jobim produced Joao Gilberto's original trilogy of albums that would be the stylistic blueprint for bossa.For the Sinfonia Alvorada, Tom Jobim is conducting the orchestra with the participation of Radames Gnattali (piano), Vinicius de Our edition features the original Oscar Niemeyer artwork. Sinfonia da Alvorada is accompanied by another major Braziilian orchestral work, The Forest of The Amazon, by Heitor Villa-Lobos. Conducted by the composer in his last year, 1959, with the great Brazilian soprano Bidu Sayão, the piece displays the whole range of Villa-Lobos's style, brilliantly evoking the sounds and colours of the jungle with musical. In a Latin Bag
Callen Radcliffe Tjader Junior is one of the leading exponents of music which owes as much to jazz as it does to Latin-America. On record he is seldom heard without a rhythm section containing bongo or congo drums while his knowledge of the intricate south-of-the-border rhythms is something of a legend.

This edition combines two fine Tjader albums that have been out of print for more than half a century. The 1961 set, IN A LATIN BAG, Tjader's debut album for Verve was produced by Creed Taylor and features Armando Peraza on bongos, Paul Horn on flute, Al McKibbon on bass, Wilfredo Vicente on congas, Johnny Rae on timbales and Lonnie Hewitt on piano. The material represents both edges of the Tjader blade. Pauneto's Point, Davito and Mambo in Miami are straightforward Latin vehicles, Green Dolphin Street, Speak Low and Misty are favourite jazz pieces, Paul Horn's Ecstasy and Half and Half are essentially jazz compositions that sound right with a Latin rhythm section, while Theme from Ben-Hur and Triste are mood pieces that defy categorisation.

The second part of our presentation is the live recording CAL TJADER - SATURDAY NIGHT, SUNDAY NIGHT AT THE BLACKHAWK, recorded at The Blackhawk Cafe in San Francisco over a weekend in late January 1962. Here Tjader, Hewitt and Rae are augmented by the young bassist Freddy Schreiber. This collection points up most aspects of Tjader's musical philosophy, from his identification with contemporary jazz (Benny Golson's Stablemates), and interest in new material (Gary McFarland's Weep), to his regard for the past (Stompin' at the Savoy) and affection for superior show tunes (Summertime). Cal's ability to stimulate his colleagues into new creative directions can be deduced, too, from Freddy Schreiber's Fred's Ahead and Lonnie Hewitt's Noonie's Groove, while the leader's own compositional skill is represented by the characteristically melodic 222 Time.
