Francoise Hardy and Her Contemporaries - Various Artists

Francoise Hardy and Her Contemporaries
Françoise Hardy breathed new life into the pop scene during the early 1960s. She brought beauty, intelligence, mystery and a disarming naturalness that the public responded to by making her a household name before she was out of her teens. Françoise embodied the style, vitality and attitude of the extraordinary decade that lay before her. She was important then and her personal and artistic influences over the ensuing years would also prove to be considerable.

Françoise Hardy's remarkable debut album was released in 1962, at the peak of a momentous era for popular European culture; what with the gathering strength of the Nouvelle vague that culminated in such film masterpieces as Jean-Luc Godard's Une Femme est Une Femme and Vivre Sa Vie and François Truffaut's Jules et Jim (a wild popular and critical success that featured a performance by Jeanne Moreau which is surely one of the most vivid in the history of cinema). The brilliance of the ever-precocious Serge Gainsbourg, the media's continuing obsession with Bardot's every gesture. The emergence, in America, of Sue Lyon (chosen by Vladimir Nabokov personally for Stanley Kubrick's film of his hot book, Lolita), of "The Queen of Screamers", Mina in Italy and, in France, of Godard's Danish muse Anna Karina, Bulgarian-born Sylvie Vartan and Roger Vadim's latest discovery, (the "New BB") English rose, Gillian Hills, who collectively would herald the Yé Yé Girl phenomenon.

Françoise Hardy and Her Contemporaries surveys that pop scene and includes such rare beauties as Sue Lyon's version of Lolita Ya-Ya and four tracks by the late Christiane Legrand; a member of Les Double Six, the original lead soprano in the Swingle Singers and the vocalist who dubbed the part of Madame Emery in Jacques Demy's Les parapluies de Cherbourg, the music for which was composed by her brother Michel Legrand. Christiane also sang the part of Judith in his Les demoiselles de Rochefort.

Return To Paradise: A History Of Exotica

Released on 20/09/10. Strange, Sultry and Seductive...fierce, fascinating and feverish - here are sounds to quicken the heart-beat; the tropical fantasy of a hidden world. A woman¹s voice calls, hypnotic and compelling; drums repeat the haunting command and the music weaves a spell of mystery.

From the early fifties, with the onset of international air travel, Exotica became a massively popular musical trend; making it possible for middleclass Americans to simulate an authentic travelogue experience - to India, Africa, Cuba, or the South Seas - in the comfort of their suburban homes.

This public looked to Les Baxter, Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman, Yma Sumac, Korla Pandit or Robert Drasnin to provide (in contrast to the prevailing rock and roll scene) a mystical combination of Oriental, African and Latin sounds, decorated with natural effects gathered from the sea, sky and forest.

Exotic music was originally conceived with Ravel's Bolero and Debussy¹s Pagodes. It left the classical world and entered pop through Les Baxter. In 1950 he created Voice of the Xtabay with four octave Peruvian singer Yma Sumac and a year later released the seminal work of exotica, his tone poem Ritual of the Savage (Le Sacre Du Sauvage).

Released on 24/08/09. Three albums excavated in their entirety documenting the closing act of the Nineteen Eighties, the dawn of a new Pop Ascension and the Fall Out that ensued. Definitive period pop music leaving behind the Gothy-Table Set murkiness of the Black Decade, announcing the Swinging Acid House about to erupt, with songs like Manchester almost accurately predicting the 'Madchester' mass hysteria that was to follow. Morricone High – The Trippier Side Of The Morricone Genius
Morricone High' showcases the composer's work for Italian psychedelic and art movies of the late sixties & early seventies. Ennio Morricone's beautiful melodies are decorated by Edda Dell'Orso's spacious wordless vocals; 'Scusi, Facciamo L'Amore?' (with the harmony singers I Cantori Moderni) (about the travails of a Neapolitan gigolo), 'Le Foto Proibite Di Una Signora Per Bene' (sex and crime Italian style) 'Veruschka' (model on a psychedelic trip) and 'La Donna Invisible' (arty Mediterranean love triangle) are all sublime examples of the composer in his pomp. Eventually the layers of sensuality give way to the atonal but no less refined, 'Notte E Bambole' from the weird, dreamlike 'The Short Night Of The Glass Dolls' (about catalepsy in art deco Prague) and the equally intense '1970' for Dario Argento's Giallo 'Il Gatto A Nove Code' starring Karl Malden as a blind writer of crossword puzzles who stumbles on a murderous plot. Songs On Page One
Released 16/03/09. There are many standard-issue personae to which an aspiring rock star might be drawn, but one has always been cooler, darker and sexier than all the rest. It is that of the artist who single-mindedly pursues his creative muse while embracing the full panoply of self-destructive, decadent, badboy behaviour: heavy drinking, frequent drug use, committed womanising, a general fuck-you attitude to both public and media, a casual disregard for society's sacred cows and taboos, and a self-belief bordering on the messianic. For three turbulent decades Serge Gainsbourg heroically exemplified all of the above - and much more.

He wrote and directed four controversial movies, he published a scurrilous novel, his records were often denounced as obscene and he was perpetually embroiled in scandal, whether for turning up drunk on a TV show and offering to f**k fellow guest Whitney Houston, recording a reggae version of Le Marseillaise, burning a 500 franc banknote on prime-time TV, or making a decidedly queasy video with his 13-year-old daughter Charlotte to promote their single, Lemon Incest. Summarising his approach to life and art, he said: "Without controversy it would all be very boring" and "For me, provocation is oxygen."

The EL edition comprises his shockingly brilliant debut album, a live track from the same period transmitted on Radio France and fine versions of songs from this momentous first album recorded with commercial success by Parisian comtemporaries Michèle Arnaud and Jean Claude Pascal Serge Gainsbourg has been one of, if not the, major single international influence on British and American independent pop music; Portishead, Franz Ferdinand, Tricky, Jarvis Cocker, Beck, Arcade Fire, Placebo, PJ Harvey, Brett Anderson, Mick Harvey, Momus and Belle and Sebastian have all claimed him as mentor In France, Gainsbourg is nothing less than an institution. As Jane Birkin put it recently: "Now French culture is talked of as before and after Serge."
