The Dawn of Psychedelia - Various Artists

The Dawn of Psychedelia
Piper At the Gates of Dawn, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Doors, Electric Music for the Mind and Body, The United States of America, Fifth Dimension, Happy Trails, Forever Changes, S F Sorrow, Ogden's Nut Gone Flake, A Child's Guide to Good and Evil, Music In A Doll's House, Mass in F Minor, We're Only In It For The Money: just some of the conceptual masterpieces of the psychedelic era.

But these monuments to the Aquarian Age didn't suddenly materialise. What of the earlier musical influences that inspired them, what of the art that cleared a path for psychedelia?

The Dawn of Psychedelia charts the course of the artistic momentum that had been gathering internationally from the mid nineteenth century. From Dante Gabriel Rossetti and the Pre-Raphaelites to Lewis Carroll, progressing through Art nouveau. Aubrey Beardsley, Erik Satie and The Sitwells. Dada, Marcel Duchamp. The Surrealists: Dali and Bunuel and Miro. Edgard Varèse, the "Father of Electronic Music", the "Matinee Idol of Modernism" and musical guru of Frank Zappa. Aldous Huxley's 'holiday from reality' and the yearning of he and such prophets (or charlatans?) as Timothy Leary to attain the cosmic conciousness of unity, light and love. Abstract Expressionism, Jackson Pollock and the sculptor Alaxander Calder. The Alice B Toklas Cook Book. The mysteries of Indian classical music and its introduction in the west (Ravi Shankar, Vilayat Khan, Ali Akbar Khan and his brilliant disciple, Sharan Rani). The pioneering of Sun Ra and the jazz hybrids created by such figures as Ken Nordine, Yusef Lateef, Herbie Mann and Gabor Szabo as each sought to break the boundaries of convention. The bewitching, other-worldly music of Sanctus from the Missa Luba, a version of the Latin Mass based on traditional Congolese songs, which establishes the magical atmosphere of Lindsay Anderson's If... a film that is a microcosm of the revolutionary 1960s and one of the most important films in cinema history.

The culmination of these pure, unadulterated divergent strands created the environment in which psychedelia would so memorably flower.

New Directions In Music

Karlheinz Stockhausen was hailed as the prophet of a new world of sound and a composer of unarguable greatness. He has also been attacked for his mystical, semi-hippie philosophy and for his impenetrable music. Not since Stravinsky has a composer generated such excitement and controversy.

His concerts in Europe, America, Japan and the Middle East offered a new kind of musical ritual, and his following amongst the young is such that one critic has called him the Pied Piper of Youth.

Stockhausen appears in Peter Blakes' famous collage for the front cover of Sgt Pepper and inspired The Beatles to experiment with techniques ranging from the use of reversed tape to the total abandonment of metre and melody - evidenced most notably on Revolution 9. New Directions In Music includes Stockhausen’s Étude (the composer’s first experimentation in musique concrète, and David Tudor s premiere recording of all four movements of Klavierstück XI. These works are complimented by Robert Craft’s historic New Directions in Music album comprising Stockhausens Zeitmasse (Time-measures) for five woodwinds and Pierre Boulez Le Marteau sans maître (The Hammer without a Master).

Psychedelic Music of India
Both regarded as absolute masters in their homeland Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Ustad Vilayat Khan, exact contemporaries and sarod and sitar players respectively are in India spoken of with the same reverence that is usually reserved for Ravi Shankar. Of course both are familiar to students of the genre of Indian classical music in the west (Vilayat Khan is known for his famous score to the merchant-ivory film "The Guru") but the commercial potential of their incredible art is only now beginning to be realised. Like Shankar, their work is hypnotic and spellbinding realised by flawless technique through a lifetime of devotion to their music. Our Price: £9.95

Psychedelic
Psychedelic is the third in the series of Mike Alway compiled and designed theme compilations on El Records. Following on from a resurgence of interest in the Psychedelic movement, the album features contributions from the King Of Luxembourg, Loveletter, Would Be Goods and Bad Dream Fancy Dress. The style of the El artists dovetails well with the fascinating historical eccentricities of the RPM label, who are represented here by artists including Harmony Grass, Tony Rivers and the Castaways and Spencer Davis. Everything But The Girl's Tracey Thorn also appears with her beautifully downbeat and sensuous performance of the Nico / Velvet Underground masterpiece "Femme Fatale" and her cover of the Bid / Monochrome Set composition "Goodbye Joe", released here or the fist time in 15 years and for the first time ever on CD. At Cranbrook And Elsewhere
Released on 21/09/09. A virtuoso of the tenor sax, flue and oboe, Lateef worked with Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, Cannonball Adderley, Miles Davis and Grant Green and is today best known for his innovative blending of eastern music with American jazz, paving the way for the likes of John Coltrane who would open up this musical territory in the sixties. At Cranbrook is Lateef’srarest album, and one of the few that has never previously been re-issued on CD. Our edition comprises the original album, recorded live at Cranbrook Academy of Art on April 9 1958 and is augmented by brilliantly adventurous repertoire from sessions recorded in - for Yusef, the hectic pivotal year - of 1957. These selections are those that founded his reputation as a pioneer for World Music. Compositions involving such exotic instrumentation as the one-stringed instrument, the rebab, finger cymbals, the scraped gourd, castanets and the argool, the unusual timbres and colours of which would have come as a huge shock to the listener back in the Fifties. Today, Yusef Lateef is held in international esteem and his work, so far ahead of it’s time half a century ago, has never seemed more essential. Strong export potential to America and all specialist jazz and world music outlets everywhere. Our Price: £9.95
