The Legend (2CD) - Joao Gilberto

The Legend (2CD)

João Gilberto’s famous trilogy of blueprints for bossa nova, recorded between 1958 and 1961 and produced by Antônio Carlos Jobim. His celebrated debut, Chega de Saudade, and the fine albums that followed, O amor, o sorriso e a flor (Love, a Smile and a Flower) and João Gilberto.

The albums combine a splendid repertoire of Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes and Carlos Lyra originals including Desafinado, Samba de uma nota só, Corcovado and Maria ninguém with Gilberto's interpretations of songs from Brazil's musical past such as Dorival Caymmi's Saudade de Bahia and O samba da minha terra and Aos Pés da Cruz by Marino Pinto and Zé da Zilda.

These recordings encapsulate the full range of João Gilberto’s singular style; the intimate voice and his innovative, linear approach to the guitar that revolutionized both Brazilian and international popular music.

Disc Two is devoted to rarities and curios from Gilberto's musical archives; his two singles with the vocal ensemble Os Garotas da Lua and his 1952 debut solo 78. His Odeon EP featuring his interpretations of songs from Black Orpheus, his recordings for the soundtrack of Italian filmmaker Steno's, Copacabana Palace and his Outra Vez from that historic night at Carnegie Hall when bossa introduced itself to America.

Also included are recordings where Gilberto provided guitar accompaniment; singles by Os Cariocas and Jonas Silva (whose understated vocal style João to some degree emulated) and selections from Canção do amor demais, an album, sung by Elizete Cardoso that was dedicated to songs of Jobim and Vinicius and which, in 1958, inaugurated the bossa nova sound.

O Amor, O Sorriso E A Flor
Amor, o sorriso è a flor (Love, a Smile, and a Flower) is the second in the trilogy of formative bossa nova albums released by João Gilberto between 1959 and 1961 (Chega de saudade ACMEM 179CD being the first).

These albums are quite literally the aesthetic and musical blueprints for a genre that would exert an irresistible worldwide influence on popular music. Our edition features the original (long out of print) classic album in its entirety and original packaging. It includes Joao's historic, first performances of such masterpieces as Samba de uma nota só (One Note Samba), Meditação (Meditation), O pato, Corcovado, Discussão and Outra vez (One More Time)

The album is augmented by rare recordings of some of the famous songs of both O Amor, o sorriso è a flor Chega de Saudade by such important contemporaries as Sergio Mendes, Walter Wanderley, Sylvia Telles, Carlos Lyra, Alaide Costa, Agostinho Dos Santos, Isaura Garcia, Os Cariocas and Luiz Eca

In 1962 Gilberto moved to the United States where he and Stan Getz recorded the million-selling Getz / Gilberto for Creed Taylor¹s Verve; an LP which featured a song (sung by João's then wife Astrud) that was to become one of the most popular of the twentieth century, the Jobim-Vinícius composition, La Garota de Ipanema (The Girl from Ipanema).

The reclusive João Gilberto is the "Great Master" of bossa nova; His art both enigmatic and timeless. He has worked with the Tropicalistas, Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso and influenced generations of arrangers, musicians and singers

Chega De Saudade
Released on 18/01/10. In the summer of 1958, a singer-guitarist from Bahia in the north of Brazil called João Gilberto created a musical revolution when he joined with Bossa Novas seminal songwriting team, the gifted composer Antônio Carlos Jobim, and the poet and former diplomat, Vinicius de Moraes, to record the songs that would launch this cool, futuristic new music for a confident new era. Bossa nova - The New Way - was influenced by modern classical music (Villa-Lobos, Debussy), jazz and samba-canção. Gilberto brought an unprecedented guitar style and a hushed, understated form of vocal expression that defined the movement and changed the course of music history. In 1959 João Gilberto released Chega de saudade, the first bossa nova LP record and Brazilian music never looked back. Our edition features the original (long out of print) classic album in its entirety, supplemented by the impossibly rare EP of songs from the film Black Orpheus and recordings of some of the famous songs of Chega de saudade by contemporaries such as Elizete Cardoso, Os Cariocas, Alaide Costa, Norma Bengell and Bola Sete. .João Gilberto Chega De Saudade - Chega de saudade (No More Blues) / Lobo bobo (Foolish Wolf) / Brigas nunca mais (Fights, Never More) / Hô-bá-lá-lá / Saudade fez um samba (Saudade made a Samba) / Maria ninguém (Maria Nobody) / Desafinado (Off-Key) / Rosa morena (Brunette Rose) / Morena boca de ouro (Brunette with a Mouth of Gold) / Bim bom / Aos pés da cruz (At the Foot of the Cross) / É luxo só (It's Just a Luxury) Our Price: £9.95

Bossa Nova Guitar
Released 17/05/10. João Gilberto invented the clean, modernist style that defines Bossa Nova; using the guitar as a percussive as well as a harmonic instrument. He and his contemporaries of the Bossa generation; Baden Powell, Luiz Bonfá and Laurindo Almeida variously combined samba, choro and Afro-Bahian ritual music with Bach, bebop, swing to forge the style that seduced the world and changed the course of musical history. All of these Brazilian guitar masters point to the inspiration of Anibal Augusto Sardinha, Garôto, who, in blending traditional Brazilian music with jazz harmonies, anticipated by years the Bossa Nova conception. A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness
Is there any need for an introduction to Astrud Gilberto, The Girl From Ipanema, who brought the nonchalant 'Vaga' vocal style of the Brasilian New Wave to international attention and launched a thousand indie-girl records and fantasies in a time and place she never imagined?? I think not... As we present her finest album, a collaboration with the Space Age, Jetsons-go-Bossa sound of the immortal Walter Wanderley, Brasil's finest organist/arranger and his excellent trio, augmented by American friend percussionist Bobby Rosengarden (of Miles Davis fame) and Bossa Nova master Joao Gilberto on guitar, this is as close as we are going to get to a totally perfect album! The wonderfully erotic vaga stylings of the timeless Astrud whisper from the Sci-Fi bachelor party soundscapes and unique arrangements of Walter Wanderley in a way that either grabs your heart, or quite frankly you are dead in the water. The Walter Wanderley Trio featured the immeasurable talents of Walter Wanderley--organ & piano; Claudio Slon--drums, Jose Marino--bass. Astrud Gilberto, vocals; Bobby Rosengarden, percussion. Joao Gilberto—guitar One of the BEST albums ever made anywhere in the world ever anywhere! Wonderfully remastered in the most painstaking RevOla way with the usual wonderful Rev-Ola packaging and very special notes! A MUST HAVE for all fans of Bossa Nova, Jazz, Brasilian music of all types, sexy breathy vocals, let's face it, anyone who isn't actually dead, and some who will rise again specifically to listen to this album! Bossa Rio
Bossa Rio were a great group produced by Sergio Mendes for- but without all the ballads and slower stuff. Members of the group include Manfredo Fest and Pery Ribeiro, Brazilian stars in their own right. This first album is very jazzy, with nice versions of Cacao do Sal , Veleiro , Saiupa , and Nana -- plus lots of other nice groovers that have a classic A&M bossa feel to them. Group leader Gracinha Leporace was Mrs. Sergio Mendes, and was to provide vocals for the later Brasil 77 albums... Poptastic and Brasilliant! Our Price: £9.95
