Festival Of Bossa Nova - Various Artists

Festival Of Bossa Nova
The story of Bossa Nova begins in the late fifties, a period of democratic freedom and economic development in Brazil.President Juscelino Kubichek set out to transform the country with an ambitious programme of public works and the promise of "Fifty years of progress in five". The national football team had won the World Cup for the first time - thanks partly to the seventeen year-old Pele - work had started on the new Lucio Costa / Oscar Niemeyer designed federal capital, Brasilia, foreign investments were growing and the arts were flourishing. For many Brazilians it was a golden age and against this background Bossa Nova was born.
Around the world, Bossa Nova would breathe new life into popular music, cast sunlight on the arts and provide jazz with a new musical carpet to roll around on.
Antonio Carlos Jobim described Bossa Nova as "Revolution with beauty". He with the poet Vinicius de Moraes and Bahian guitarist/ vocalist Joao Gilberto, were the principle architects of Bossa, with the three historic albums Gilberto recorded between 1959-61 being the stylistic blueprint for the movement.
Festival of Bossa Nova includes selections from each of these classic Gilberto albums, tracks by Elis Regina, the finest female vocalist Brazil has yet produced, the first vocal recording by Vinicius de Moraes, the tracks displaying emerging genius of the guitarist Baden Powell and a host of Antonio Carlos Jobim songwriting masterpieces interpreted by the key protagonists of those days.

Sacred Choral Music
Released 27/11/08. Born in London circa 1540, William Byrd was the foremost composer of the Elizabethan age. A master of keyboard music and the madrigal as well as Latin and English church music, he was an organist and member of the sovereign's private religious establishment, the Chapel Royal. Yet he remained throughout his life a dedicated Roman Catholic who was persecuted as a recusant and who upheld through his art the old faith. For many, Byrd’s Masses represent the pinnacle of his work. Inspired in part by the archaic compositions of John Taverner, yet also admitting the influence of European composers such as Palestrina, they are dark, mystical and intimate works that often reach an intensity unusual for Renaissance times, with the Agnus Dei of the Mass for Five Voices in particular culminating in some of the most poignantly beautiful music ever composed. The Art Of Julian Bream
Julian Bream is recognised as one of the world's leading guitarists, some would say the greatest. He is certainly Britain's senior ambassador as a guitarist and lutenist, having toured more widely and more frequently than any other artist in the international arena.  He has done incomparable work in the recording studio to establish both the guitar and lute as concert instruments. Not content with his unique status as a performer, Bream is actively concerned with new music - having commissioned works from leading contemporary composers, Henze, Walton, Maxwell Davies, Rawsthorne, Tippett and Britten and those featured here by Malcolm Arnold and by Lennox Berkeley.  At the end of the fifties he secured a contract with RCA and from thereon his records sold like hot cakes to a worldwide audience. His 1959-60 recordings, made at the dawn of an illustrious career, are the centre-piece of this edition.

Loguerhythyms - Songs From The Establishment
•    Christopher Logue wrote screenplay's for The End of Arthur's Marriage,  a Wednesday Play directed in the mid-sixties by Ken Loach and for Ken Russell's effervescent biopic of the sculptor Henri Gaudier-Brzeska. As an actor, again for Russell, took the roles of Cardinal Richelieu in The Devils and the poet Swinburne in the Monitor film about the Pre-Raphaelite painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti.

•    Logue compiled / edited the columns True Stories and Pseud's Corner for Private Eye, wrote a pornographic novel and protested with Bertrand Russell against nuclear weapons.

•    His poem War Music was begun as part of a BBC commission toward a modern rendering of parts of Homer's Iliad. The project would become his pre-occupation for more than four decades.

•    Here, Logue's poetry is set to jazz music arranged by Tony Kinsey and Stanley Myers and sung brilliantly effect by Annie Ross at Peter Cook's Soho club, The Establishment.

•    Ross was the logical choice for this; a friend, she had, with extraordinary power, timing and wit, established herself both with some memorable solo recordings and in the finest vocal jazz group of the day, Lambert Hendricks and Ross. In the opinion of many, Ross is the finest British female jazz vocalist of all time  and her performance on Loguerhythms is surely amongst her best work, harnessing perfectly the nuances of Logue's pithy invective.

•    Loguerhythms was preceded in 1959 by the extended play recording, Red Bird: Jazz and Poetry, performed by Logue himself and based on a loose adaptation of Pablo Neruda's Twenty Love Poems, recorded by George Martin, with jazz arrangements by Tony Kinsey and Bill LeSage.

•    This edition combines Loguerhythms  and Red Bird, making these extraordinary recordings available for the first time on compact disc.

NB: This title is released July 21 and will not be dispatched before this date.
