New Italian Cinema - Various - Music From The Films

New Italian Cinema
Released on 15/08/11. Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita and Michelangelo
Antonioni's L'Avventura were the dawn of the Italian New Wave in 1960,
films about the decadence, glamour and emptiness of middle class life
during the economic boom of post- War Italy. Together, these
groundbreaking films embody the spirit of a time in cinema when anything
seemed possible and put Italian film firmly on the world stage. La
Dolce Vita won the Palme d'Or in 1960, it thrilled the critics but was
condemned by the Vatican and was subject to widespread censorship.
Today, however, it is regarded as one of the true landmarks of film
history. L'Avventura, which initially recieved a hostile reception,
changed the visual language of cinema, and in 1962 the British Film
Institute voted it the second best film of all time (after Citizen Kane)Both
modernists, the directors however offer two distinctive styles, with
the sombre Antonioni (whose popularity in Britain perhaps rests on his
quintessential sixties swinging london film, Blow-Up) an appeal to the
intellect and the playful Fellini an appeal to the senses. Antonioni's
world is stark, cold, confounding, and filled with dead end corners.
Fellini's world is more like a circus - and yet his characters are no
less doomed than Antonioni's, coming face to face with a great emptiness
underneath the glamour.
