America The Beautiful/Does The Sun Really Shine On The Moon
Gary McFarland blazed through the American music landscape of the 1960's and disappeared almost as fast as he appeared. Possessed of a brilliant melodic gift, he quickly distinguished himself on jazz projects with Gerry Mulligan, Stan Getz and Bill Evans and saw his first taste of wide popularity with the 'soft samba' album, where he explored the music of The Beatles with such sidemen as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Kenny Burrell, and Willie Bobo.the jazz Cognescenti, however, were not impressed, tending in those days to rather look down on popular music. Nonetheless, McFarland was a man of many faces and throughout the sixties he never looked back; scoring a jazz ballet, writing commercial jingles to pay the rent, and composing his largest orchestral work in the form of the inexplicably still unreleased score for the David Niven, David Hemmings Sharon Tate occult film '13' (otherwise known as 'eye of the devil'). By 1969 McFarland, like the United States, was in transition. having alienated his original uptight jazz fans, and not yet having been discovered by the long-haired crowd, he threw all his cards on the table in what was and remains his greatest work; 'America the Beautiful' is a stunningly original jazz-rock tone poem about the state of the country, circa 1968. With the environment in shambles, a seemingly endless war raging, and corporate greed running amuck, Gary expressed his outrage the only way he knew how: through music. It barely needs to be said this album is as relevant today as it was then. McFarland's trademark mix of gallows humour and sadness dominates this album, from the song titles ('suburbia-two poodles and a plastic Jesus') to the music itself. Listen and try not to be moved by the slash & burn guitar of Eric Gale on 'on this site..' or Snooky Young's mournful trumpet solo on 'last rites for the promised land', which was originally composed in 1963 for 4 black girls killed in an Alabama church bombing. After the intensity of 'America the Beautiful' this edition moves into a more relaxed mood, the flipside of McFarland's musical coin, 'Does the sun really shine on the moon?' a buoyant excursion through the pop charts of the day, it is suffused with his trademark vibes and vocalise including the super-funky flea market with its multi-tracked vibe solo, originally composed as a jingle for fresca(!) Moving into the seventies, McFarland would steer ever more towards pop, gaining confidence as a producer in the studio and releasing two albums ('today' & 'butterscotch rum)' which remain, perhaps, the two last great undiscovered pop classics of that era. It all came crashing down on November 2, 1971 when, celebrating the end of a particularly gruelling recording session, McFarland ingested a drink with a fatal overdose of liquid methadone. Some say he was the victim of a malicious prank, others that it was misadventure (McFarland was not without his share of personal demons). Whatever happened, it ended a remarkable musical career. He was 38 years old. Our Price: £9.95

Mafioso...And Other Great Piccioni Scores
•    Piero Piccioni was one of the golden generation of popular Italian composers, emerging  in the '50s and early 1960s, whose primary focus was in the creation of film scores.

•    With the advent of the New Wave and the arrival of the spaghetti western invented by the genre's masters directors, Sergio Leone and Sergio Corbucci,  Piccioni, and such contemporaries as Ennio Morricone, Stelvio Cipriani, Bruno Nicolai, Francesco De Masi and Nico Fidenco were propelled onto the international stage.

•    If Morricone re-wrote the musical language of film, Piccioni also quickly established a unique compositional voice; an impressive, astounding blend of jazz, pop and orchestral styles.

•    The composer's innate versatility and eclecticism is showcased by the scores featured in this edition. The centrepiece is his music for Alberto Lattuada's Mafioso, a 1962 black comedy starring the great Alberto Sordi  for whom Piccioni would eventually write more than fifty film soundtracks. Mafioso is a clever, thought-provoking film that many consider set the standard for every mafia film that would follow

•    Also featured within our presentation is music from the television documentaries Il Mondo di Notte (The World by Night), a selection of themes from what is arguably Piccioni's most lovely score, Mauro Bolognini's Senilita (Careless) - an intense romance set in Trieste, which finds the lovely Claudia Cardinale alongside a desperate Tony Franciosa.
The finishing touch is the long deleted Piero Piccioni Presenta Lydia MacDonald album. Born in Edinburgh of a Scottish father and an Italian mother, MacDonald - with Edda Dell'Orso and Mina - was one of the composer's favourite female vocalists. She famously performed Mr. Dante Fontana and Richmond Bridge on Fumo di Londra, and her distinctive,
sensual voice illuminated any number of Piccioni's scores.

N.B. This album is released August 18 and will not be dispatched before this date.

Conception: Anthology of Early Landmark Recordings
•    Gary Burton, the astonishing virtuoso of the vibraphone. A child prodigy who achieved renown among musicians who marveled at his dazzling technique and originality of conception. Throughout a long career that traversed Nashville, George Shearing, Stan Getz, psychedelia, improvisation, free jazz, jazz rock and fusion, he retained a creative disposition; looking always to broaden his musical horizon and to push the boundaries of musical convention. Burton's innovations include the revival and adaptation of the use of a four mallet technique which enabled him to significantly increase the scope of his sound.

•    That the iconic countrypolitan guitarist and producer Chet Atkins was responsible for signing Burton to his first recording contract, is testament to the universality of his musical appeal.

•    This two cd set, comprises, Gary's 1961 debut LP as leader, New Vibe Man In Town (with Gene Cherico and Dave Brubeck's drummer Joe Morello), the second album, Who is Gary Burton? (with Chris Swansen, Phil Woods, Bob Brookmeyer, Clark Terry., Morello, John Neves and Tommy Flanagan) that followed a year later, and historic sessions of the same era in which the vibist participated: The Nashville All-Stars' After The Riot at Newport, the impromptu live date recorded on the back porch of a rented mansion after the group of eight Nashville musicians, including the guitarists Chet Atkins and Hank Garland, the pianist Floyd Cramer and the 17 year-old Burton, had arrived at the Rhode Island festival at which they were due to appear to find the event in disarray because of an unruly crowd. Another auspicious occasion, and the fourth album of this edition, is Hank Garland's superlative Jazz Winds From A New Direction, the jazz debut of this most predominant of all Nashville session guitarists. Garland's group consists of Burton, bassist Joe Benjamin and Joe Morello. Burton and Garland are in perfect, at times, awe-inspiring synchronicity on what has come to be regarded as one of the definitive jazz guitar statements.

•    Completing the package is Floyd Cramer's million-selling single, Last Date, on which Gary provides a simple accompaniment. The record reached number two on the Billboard chart. The single that kept it from the top spot was Elvis Presley's Are You Lonesome Tonight.

N.B. This album is released August 18 and will not be dispatched before this date.

Don't Let Your Son Grow Up To Be A Cowboy (Unreleased Recordings 1981-1982)
•    Still active to this day, Glasgow band the Jazzateers made their name with an album and single for Rough Trade Records in 1983.

•    Don’t Let Your Son Grow Up To Be A Cowboy boasts the band’s earlier, long-thought-lost sessions for Postcard Records, combining nearly two albums overseen by Postcard boss and Jazzateers’ manager Alan Horne.

•    'Wasted' was scheduled to be the final Postcard single (81-14) and was produced by Orange Juice’s Edwyn Collins.

•    Although it only existed for a couple of years, Postcard has been hugely influential and was recently the subject of a critically acclaimed book by Simon Goddard, Simply Thrilled.

•    The album has been overseen by current Jazzateer Douglas MacIntyre (of The Creeping Bent Organisation).

•    The title and artwork of this amazing compilation hark back to work-in-progress ideas during the band’s time with Postcard.

N.B. This album is released August 25 and will not be dispatched before this date.
