Eighth Wonder of the World - Jimmy Smith

Eighth Wonder of the World
Released on 21/06/10. Miles Davis, who was not usually moved to superlatives, was said to have described Jimmy Smith as The Eighth Wonder of the World. Certainly there’s no dispute that Jimmy certainly is the first wonder of the jazz organ. Our edition compiles Jimmy Smith’s miraculous late-fifties recordings that took the jazz world by a storm. The Champ, After Hours, The Sermon; all of the classics of the first phase of Smith’s career. Smith refined and modernised jazz organ. His work defined what today remains the standard approach to the instrument. In essence, he made the Hammond organ perform the work of an entire Jazz trio: using the left hand for chordal accompaniment, right hand for lead, and both feet to produce a walking bass line. A decade ahead of schedule Jimmy Smith created the sound that would make the sixties swing. In the sixties and seventies, with the advent of psychedelia and progressive rock -where the organ would become a central feature -such keyboardists as Spencer Davis, Graham Bond, Georgie Fame, Procol Harum’s Gary Brooker, Brian Auger, Mick Weaver, Jon Lord, Peter Bardensa and Keith Emerson tapped into Smith’s dynamism and his soulful, sensual groove. This man was without peer. His creativity and original style put him in a class of his own and it’s no exaggeration to say that almost every organ player that came after him was in some way or another influenced by Jimmy Smith.
