A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness
Is there any need for an introduction to Astrud Gilberto, The Girl From Ipanema, who brought the nonchalant 'Vaga' vocal style of the Brasilian New Wave to international attention and launched a thousand indie-girl records and fantasies in a time and place she never imagined?? I think not... As we present her finest album, a collaboration with the Space Age, Jetsons-go-Bossa sound of the immortal Walter Wanderley, Brasil's finest organist/arranger and his excellent trio, augmented by American friend percussionist Bobby Rosengarden (of Miles Davis fame) and Bossa Nova master Joao Gilberto on guitar, this is as close as we are going to get to a totally perfect album! The wonderfully erotic vaga stylings of the timeless Astrud whisper from the Sci-Fi bachelor party soundscapes and unique arrangements of Walter Wanderley in a way that either grabs your heart, or quite frankly you are dead in the water. The Walter Wanderley Trio featured the immeasurable talents of Walter Wanderley--organ & piano; Claudio Slon--drums, Jose Marino--bass. Astrud Gilberto, vocals; Bobby Rosengarden, percussion. Joao Gilberto—guitar One of the BEST albums ever made anywhere in the world ever anywhere! Wonderfully remastered in the most painstaking RevOla way with the usual wonderful Rev-Ola packaging and very special notes! A MUST HAVE for all fans of Bossa Nova, Jazz, Brasilian music of all types, sexy breathy vocals, let's face it, anyone who isn't actually dead, and some who will rise again specifically to listen to this album! Bossa Nova
Carlos Lyra wrote some of the classics of bossa nova and Música Popular Brasileira, either alone, or with such partners as Vinicius de Moraes and Ronaldo Bôscoli. His most famous compositions include Coisa Mais Linda, Você e Eu, Maria Ninguém (once claimed by Jacqueline Kennedy to be her favorite song), and Influência do Jazz. Along with Roberto Menescal, he was a primary figure of the younger generation of bossa nova musicians who closely followed the inception of the style by João Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim. With Menescal, he also created a guitar academy that became a meeting point for future artists like Edu Lobo, Marcos Valle and Nara Leão with whom he collaborated later, as part of the bossa's activist wing, seeking a return to its samba roots.João Gilberto included no less than three Lyra compositions on his momentous Chega de saudade 1959 debut lp; Maria Ninguém, Lobo Bobo, and Saudade Fez um Samba. That same year, Lyra recorded his first solo album, Bossa Nova, which we are pleased to present along with its eponymous sequel.

Knife In The Water O/S/T
Knife in the Water was Roman Polanski's first full-length feature,
the film with which he effectively announced his genius to
international cinema.
A middle class couple pick up a hitchhiker who turns their lives upside down in the course of one day. Here is a natural filmmaker making a stunning cinematic debut out of almost nothing.
It was first seen in the West at the Venice Film Festival,
where the International Federation of Film Critics gave it their
FIPRESCI award. Two years later it would be nominated for an Academy Award as Best Foreign Language Film.
The screenplay was by Polanski and Jerzy Skolimowski
It opened doors for Polanski in Western Europe and America that made his extraordinary career possible.
The music was written by the brilliant young Polish composer and pianist Krzysztof Komeda. It is arguably one of the most effective scores in cinema history; understated jazz that compliments the picture's sharp monochrome cinematography and the tense minimalism of the script and brings to the film another emotional dimension.
Also included here are three pieces composed and performed by Komeda for Andrzej Wajda's 1960 film The Innocent Sorcerers. Written by Skolimowski, this is a stylish, humorous film about Polish youth: their underground scene, girls, scooters, jazz etc. Both Komeda and Polanski appear on screen.
Komeda would go on to write three further film scores for Polanski; Rosemary's Baby, The Fearless Vampire Killers, Cul-de-sac. Overall Komeda wrote more than seventy soundtracks before his tragically early, somewhat mysterious death in 1969, at the age of just 38.

The Legend (2CD)

João Gilberto’s famous trilogy of blueprints for bossa nova, recorded between 1958 and 1961 and produced by Antônio Carlos Jobim. His celebrated debut, Chega de Saudade, and the fine albums that followed, O amor, o sorriso e a flor (Love, a Smile and a Flower) and João Gilberto.

The albums combine a splendid repertoire of Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes and Carlos Lyra originals including Desafinado, Samba de uma nota só, Corcovado and Maria ninguém with Gilberto's interpretations of songs from Brazil's musical past such as Dorival Caymmi's Saudade de Bahia and O samba da minha terra and Aos Pés da Cruz by Marino Pinto and Zé da Zilda.

These recordings encapsulate the full range of João Gilberto’s singular style; the intimate voice and his innovative, linear approach to the guitar that revolutionized both Brazilian and international popular music.

Disc Two is devoted to rarities and curios from Gilberto's musical archives; his two singles with the vocal ensemble Os Garotas da Lua and his 1952 debut solo 78. His Odeon EP featuring his interpretations of songs from Black Orpheus, his recordings for the soundtrack of Italian filmmaker Steno's, Copacabana Palace and his Outra Vez from that historic night at Carnegie Hall when bossa introduced itself to America.

Also included are recordings where Gilberto provided guitar accompaniment; singles by Os Cariocas and Jonas Silva (whose understated vocal style João to some degree emulated) and selections from Canção do amor demais, an album, sung by Elizete Cardoso that was dedicated to songs of Jobim and Vinicius and which, in 1958, inaugurated the bossa nova sound.

Give Peace A Chance
Wayne Henderson, along with childhood friends Wilton Felder, Joe Sample, and Nesbert "Stix"¨ Hooper, formed the nucleus of the Jazz Crusaders in 1961. By fusing elements of jazz, funk, soul, R&B, rock, Latin, and gospel, an iridescent sound emerged with such impact that a musical revolution was unearthed. The group signed to Pacific Jazz Records and recorded sixteen albums for them. Their ability to breathe new life into many different types of compositions gained them an immediate fanbase that grew internationally throughout the 1960’s.
At the close of the decade, they recorded a one off album for Liberty Records. GIVE PEACE A CHANCE saw the quartet move in a more soulful direction than on early albums. Amongst their own compositions was an amazing Funky workout of Roy Hawkins’ "The Thrill Is Gone” as well as the Lennon/McCartney tunes "Give Peace A Chance” and "Black Bird”.
GIVE PEACE A CHANCE was not one of the group’s biggest sellers in 1970 due to a lack of promotion from Liberty Records but the album has gained in stature over the decades and is seen very much as the first step towards the band’s seventies fusion classics like Southern Comfort and the international hit Street Life.
BBR is very proud to announce the international CD debut of GIVE PEACE A CHANCE complete with brand new liner notes and remastered sound. It is a must for all Jazz Fusion, Soul and Funk fans out there.
