You Gotta Walk It Like You Talk It… Or You’ll Lose That Beat - Walter Becker & Donald Fagen

You Gotta Walk It Like You Talk It… Or You’ll Lose That Beat
Donald Fagen and Walter Becker are the two central figures in Steely Dan, the most erudite and sophisticated American rock group of the seventies. ‘You’ve Got To Walk It Like You Talk It’ is the soundtrack for a Richard Pryor film they recorded in 1971, one year before the formation of the band and release of ‘Can’t Buy a Thrill’. Sessions feature Steely Dan guitarist Denny Diaz with many of the band’s stylistic features already apparent.

Classic Film Noir Themes & Jazz Tracks
Trust and betrayal…. damnation and redemption… but very few happy endings!

In the beginning, they weren't called ‘Film Noir'. That term didn't originate until 1946 when a Frenchman coined the phrase as a convenient catchall reference for American low budget hard-boiled crime and detective B-movies shot during the austere ‘40s and early ‘50s.

It was the look of Film Noir movies as much as their down beat storylines, which made for compulsive viewing. Shot in black and white, these films were dark and claustrophobic and relied upon deep shadows, shards of light and surreal angle shots to establish the appropriate mood.

Such hard-boiled dime store pulp novels and their subsequent screenplays were crammed with guilt-ridden characters who lurked fearfully in the shadows. A nether world where paranoia and textbook whackos ran rampant, a very dark place where weak, impressionable boys regularly dumped their apple pie and ice cream girlfriends for the kind of feckless female sexual predators their mothers constantly warned them about. An underworld where those good cop not on a crusade went to the bad and sweating sad saps were framed for crimes they didn't commit and adulterous lovers who, having killed unwanted spouses, turned on one another.

As for the musical soundtrack? It was brassy and performed full blast to the point of distortion. So intense in execution that the VU meter needles were permanently rammed in the red area of the dial. But then, nothing about the Film Noir genre could be regarded as subtle!

To Kill A Mockingbird OST / Blues And Brass
•    Elmer Bernstein's score of To Kill A Mockingbird, a film which with charm, dignity, and a sense of real values is a landmark in American cinema history.

•    In the film, the people and incidents that made Harper Lee's book a runaway best-seller and winner of the Pulitzer prize come to life under the skilful direction of Robert Mulligan. And the performances by Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch and Mary Badham and Philip Alford as the Finch children, Scout and Jem are warm and compelling; truly remarkable.

•    Elmer Bernstein's music is, in turn, reflective of the qualities of enlightenment and humanity that are personified by Peck's Atticus.

•    The range of action with which the composer had to work was wide. It included the scoring of a children's game and the welling of terror surrounding a night reconnoitre of the forbidding house where Boo Radley lived. There is music to underline the nobility of Atticus Finch in his dealings with his children and in his efforts to unjustly accuse Tom Robinson, superbly played by Brock Peters.

•    Using his melodies and his orchestra wisely, and with great feeling for the story, Bernstein created a score of music that captures the essence of the people and the situations. It is a monument of taste and subtlety.

•    Blues and Brass, the second feature of our presentation was recorded  in the wake of the composer's trailblazing jazz scores for two of the grittiest films of the 1950s, Otto Preminger's Man With the Golden Arm and Sandy MacKendrick's Sweet Smell of Success.

•    Here, Bernstein's exquisite arrangements are realised by an all-star assortment of outstanding West Coast musicians of the day, including Andre Previn, Shelley Manne, Bud Shank, Howard Roberts, Dave Pell, Bill Holman, Maynard Ferguson and Jack Marshall and the result is as magical as one might expect. It's really a travesty that this finely crafted mid-century document has been out of print for more than five decades.

Kongos: Remastered and Expanded Edition
•    NEWLY REMASTERED & EXPANDED EDITION OF THIS CLASSIC 1972 ALBUM BY JOHN KONGOS
•    WITH NINE BONUS TRACKS
•    FEATURES HIT SINGLES ‘HE’S GONNA STEP ON YOU AGAIN’ AND ‘TOKOLOSHE MAN’

Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the release of a newly re-mastered and expanded edition of the classic self-titled 1972 album by JOHN KONGOS. South African born Kongos had some success in his native country in the early 1960s before moving to Britain to further his career. He recorded his first album for Pye Records’ newly formed "progressive” label Dawn in 1970 before signing to Fly / Cube Records with whom he enjoyed two successful and highly creative hit singles "He’s Gonna Step on You Again” and "Tokoloshe Man”.

The album "Kongos” was released in 1972 and was a UK chart hit. Produced by Gus Dudgeon, "Kongos” featured a diversity of styles and experimentation and saw contributions from musicians such as Ray Cooper and Caleb Quaye. ‘He’s Gonna Step On You Again’ was recorded by the HAPPY MONDAYS in 1990 as ‘Step’, (a hit single), which brought Kongos’ music to a new generation of followers.

This Esoteric Recordings release has been newly re-mastered and features nine bonus tracks (taken from his singles released by Fly / Cube Records), a booklet that fully restores the original album artwork and a new essay.

Playboy Themes
•    Enrico Nicola Mancini. Orchestral craftsman. Melodic genius. Seventy-two Grammy Nominations, twenty wins...eighteen Oscar nominations, four wins... two Emmys, a Golden Globe, a Grammy Lifetime award.

•    Although he was hired as a pianist and arranger for Glenn Miller's post-war band and was a busy in-house arranger for Universal films from the early fifties (contributing to or completing an estimated 100 scores), it was 1958 before Mancini really exploded onto the scene with his searing Afro-Cuban style score for Orson Welles' film noir Touch of Evil, the director's still underrated masterpiece of murder, kidnapping, and police corruption in a Mexican border town, and also with the irresistible chart-topping swinger-jazz he composed for NBC's crime-battling Peter Gunn, a nationwide TV hit created by Blake Edwards, the film director, screenwriter, producer and former Universal editor with whom 'Hank' was to enjoy a long and fruitful association.

•    Playboy Themes is an anthology of Mancini's trailblazing output from the 1958 landmarks to the end of 1962, taking in music from both "Gunn" and its sequel Mr. Lucky with which Mancini and Edwards revolutionised the whole concept of television music, and a raft of successful early film collaborations between the two men; Breakfast At Tiffany's (starring Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard), High Time (Bing Crosby and Tuesday Weld), Experiment In Terror (Lee Remick and Glenn Ford) and in a nice change of pace for Mancini, a dramatic picture, The Days of Wine and Roses (Lee Remick and Jack Lemmon) which, like Tiffany's and Moon River was boosted by a themesong co-composed by Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer.

•    In addition to Touch of Evil (Charlton Heston and Janet Leigh), Mancini themes from some other, non-Blake Edwards pictures are also featured, including from Howard Hawks' Hatari! (John Wayne and Elsa Martinelli), Robert Mulligan's The Great Impostor (Tony Curtis and Karl Malden) and Jack Arnold's Bachelor In Paradise (Bob Hope and Lana Turner)

NB: This title is released on October 20, 2014 and will not be dispatched until this date.
