Books
The Afghan by Frederick Forsyth - pretty straight forward Al Qaeda thriller type stuff.
Dawn Of The Dumb by Charlie Brooker - compilation of the acerbic Guardian columns.
Determined by Norman Whiteside - Big Norm, The Shankhill Skinhead, Legend!
Films
The Diving Bell & The Butterfly - a poignant tale of a magazine editor who suffers a stroke but through sheer will and determination goes about writing his memoirs. Directed by Julian Schnabel. I saw this film in the extremely pleasant Rex Cinema in Berkhamsted accompanied by a fine glass of red wine. Cinema going at its finest.
Control - the story of Ian Curtis and Joy Division. I was in a foul mood watching this after Flight Centre managed to mess up all my honeymoon plans. Despite that, it's a good film, Sam Riley is a very convincing Curtis.
Into The Wild - Sean Penn directed this story of a young chap who heads off to Alaska to live free of material goods. The idealistic plan backfires somewhat.
Indiana Jones & The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull - the crystal skull looks more like a novelty lamp from Argos. The story is weak but I had to see it in the vain hope it might be good. It wasn't.
Iron Man - Not going to win the Palme D'Or but it's a good comic book adaptation.
CD’s
Made In The Dark by Hot Chip - The best thing to come out of Putney since Mr Benn.
Late Night Tales by Air - Like nosing through Godin and Dunckel's record collections and unearthing gems from Nino Rota, The Band and Lee Hazlewood amongst others and making a mix tape!
Gigs
Black Francis @ Koko - Won tickets at the Three Kings Music Quiz for this. Not bad, not really my cup of tea though.
Guru’s Jazzmatazz & The Jazz Café - That's more like it. Gang Starr's frontman looked older than I expected but then again he is a true hip hop legend! Impressive trumpetry.
Football
Champions League Final. Marvellous. |
