FEATURED RELEASE...BIFF ROSE 'THE THORN 2'
Biff Rose is an iconic, eccentric and usually anarchic Comedian and Songwriter. His humorous view of the world first created a stir in the late 1960’s when he released two albums on comedian Bill Cosby’s Tetragrammaton label in the US. Biff appeared on TV shows such as Johnny Carson and the Smothers Brothers, had billboard advertising promotion, toured live shows. It added up to a decent profile for this observational social commentator, who performed in a style similar to Tom Lehrer, and drew on experience performing in early 60’s vaudeville style revue. That would have been enough except that by 1972 one David Bowie discovered Biffs songs and performance style, the latter a major influence in the creation of the legendary album Hunky Dory. Specifically Bowie covered the song Fill Your Heart for that album, and Buzz The Fuzz was in the live set, recorded on bootleg tapes, when Bowie also talks about the songs originator.
His early work consists of unaccompanied piano and vocals as well as more heavily orchestrated numbers. His lyrics have been described as romantic and humorous, while promoting a left-wing hippie philosophy. His piano-playing has been described as jaunty, reminiscent of pre-World War II Broadway musicals.
Rose's work of the past ten years differs from his early recordings. He has introduced spoken word and rap elements into his songs; some recordings experiment with extended song forms and eccentric instrumentation. It seemed only right that Cherry Red should present Biff’s latest album ‘The Thorn 2’ and while it’s true he may have mellowed with age, this latest collection of lucid laments and comically composed ditties is sure to please his cult following. And don’t forget we also have the only overview compilation of Biff’s early recordings available for download too – including both the original tracks that were adopted by Bowie…Fill your Heart With Biff Rose...from iTunes or Amazon
