Hello - Marc Brierley

Hello
•    Marc Brierley was a talented folk artist who made his name as a singer-songwriter during the second half of the Sixties.

•    After making an EP in 1966 for Transatlantic, Marc signed with CBS for two albums, Welcome To The Citadel (1968) and Hello (1969), helped by some of the best musicians on the circuit. Both are now prized collector’s items by fans of the Acid Folk era.

•    This welcome reissue of Marc’s second album Hello is swelled by eleven bonus tracks: the stand-alone CBS single from 1969, ‘Be My Brother’/‘ If You Took The Bandage Off Your Head You Wouldn't Be So Blind’, and a batch of demos recorded for Island Records in 1973.

•    Marc Brierley has written new sleeve-notes for this overdue reissue of a cult classic.

•    Several of the demo tracks were recorded as a duo, Brierley Cross (with Steve Cross).

N.B. This album is released August 25 and will not be dispatched before this date.

Reaffirmation: An Anthology 1971-1973 2CD
•    A NEW REMASTERED TWO CD ANTHOLOGY BY HELP YOURSELF
•    FEATURING TRACKS FROM EVERY ALBUM ISSUED BY UNITED ARTISTS AND A RARE SINGLE
•    BOOKLET WITH NEW ESSAY BY MICHAEL HEATLEY

Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the release of "Reaffirmation”, a comprehensive anthology by the unsung heroes of British early 70s rock, HELP YOURSELF. Help Yourself was formed in London in 1970, originally as a backing band for singer-songwriter MALCOLM MORLEY and took their influences from American West Coast Country and Acid Rock. After Morley signed to the Famepushers management stable, his manager John Eichler suggested Morley form a new band and HELP YOURSELF was born. Featuring Malcolm Morley (guitars, keyboards, vocals), former Sam Apple Pie member Dave Charles (drums, percussion, vocals), Richard Treece (guitars, vocals, harmonica) and Ken Whaley (bass), the band signed to United Artists in 1970 and their eponymous debut album was issued in 1971.

Following a tour with label mates Brinsley Schwarz and Ernie Graham (also Famepushers artists), Ken Whaley departed the band. An expanded line-up including Ernie Graham and Jonathan Glemser began work on the album "Strange Affair” in 1972, but Graham and Glemser’s departure half-way through the recording saw roadie Paul Burton join the band to complete the album, (which would include the excellent extended track ‘The All Electric Fur Trapper’). The band embarked on a tour of Switzerland with Welsh rock legends Man and a bond formed between the two groups. The band’s "Beware the Shadow” was an even stronger effort, featuring the Help’s twelve-minute anthem, ‘Reaffirmation’, a track that displayed the instrumental excellence of the group. Prior to a tour to promote their most recent album Malcolm Morley fell ill with depression and Deke Leonard, recently dismissed from Man, took his place. When Morley recovered, Leonard remained with the band, appearing with them on the "Christmas at the Patti” concert in December 1972. In early 1973 Deke Leonard departed the band to pursue a solo career and the band began work on the album "Happy Days”, a record that also featured The Flying Aces and Vivian "Spiv’ Morris. Paul Burton’s departure during these sessions saw Ken Whaley return to the band. Work then commenced on another album, "the Return of Ken Whaley”. Both albums were released as a package by United Artists later that year. Although critically acclaimed, commercial success continued to elude the band and in August 1973 Help Yourself disbanded, with Malcolm Morley and Ken Whaley joining Man in 1974 for their album "Winos, Rhinos and Lunatics”.

Forty years on, HELP YOURSELF is now regarded as one of the great, unsung British bands of their era. This anthology gathers together the essential tracks from all of their albums released by United Artists, newly re-mastered from the original master tapes. It features a booklet with essay by Michael Heatley and is a tribute to their genius.

NB: This title is released July 28 and will not be dispatched before this date.

Platinum Hook: Expanded Edition
•    PLATINUM HOOK was a slick R&B/Funk combo who released three albums on Motown between 1978 and 1983. Having signed to the label for their debut eponymous release in 1978, PLATINUM HOOK offered up a smooth and engaging R&B/Funk sound that more than matched their label mates and other rivals of the time.

•    Produced by keyboardist, songwriter and arranger Greg Wright, a mainstay of the Motown organization through the 70's having worked with Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, Thelma Houston, Switch and Jermaine Jackson, PLATINUM HOOK's debut is an album of great depth and variety proving that the polished and professional studio tricks of the time still left room for plenty of grit.

•    PLATINUM HOOK opens with the tight club groove ‘Bittersweet,’ a horn and synth led track that introduces the groups lead vocalists Tina Renee Stanford and Stephen Daniels to blistering effect. Track 2 is an excellent cover of Shotgun's mid-tempo funk jam from the previous year, "Hotline.” ‘'Til I Met You’ and ‘Lover What You've Done (To Me)’ are both smooth soul ballads that still bring the funk into the rhythms and help round out the albums overall sound. ‘Standing On The Verge (Of Getting It On),’ a cover of the Funkadelic classic, can hold its head up high to the original. Both ‘Hooked For Life’ and ‘Gotta Find A Woman’ are soulful mid-tempo grooves with an emphasis on the slick harmonies. Closing track ‘City Life’ is a full on high-tempo Disco/Soul number leaving you breathless, but gasping for more.

•    BBR is very proud to present PLATINUM HOOK, expertly remastered and complete with extensive liner notes and bonus tracks. Essential listening for all R&B, Soul, Funk and Disco fans.

Down To Love Town: Expanded Edition
•    Formed in 1966, THE ORIGINALS worked as studio backup singers at Motown and featured on tracks such as ‘What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted’ by Jimmy Ruffin, ‘For Once In My Life’ by Stevie Wonder and Edwin Starr’s politically fuelled jam, ‘War.’ The original Originals were made up of four singers, the group's baritone and founder Walter Gaines, tenors Hank Dixon and C.P. Spencer (an original member of The Spinners) and also bass singer, Freddie Gorman, who was one of the writers of ‘Please Mr. Postman.’ In the late 60s, under the guidance and writing expertise of Al Green, The Originals scored two of their biggest hits early in their career with ‘Baby I'm For Real’ and the Gold certified, ‘The Bells.’

•    DOWN TO LOVE TOWN was the groups eighth album for Motown and was released in 1977. Produced by Michael Sutton and the Originals The album opens with intent on the horn and wah-wah led Disco/Soul stomper ‘Hurry Up And Wait’ before making way for the title track and only single from the album. ‘Down To Love Town’ (Disco #1/Pop #47) was originally included on their 1976 album Communique and became a true Disco classic with an incredible and impassioned lead vocal from Freddy Gorman's tenor/baritone, as he demands everybody join him in ‘Love Town,’ while the interplay between the guitar, strings and percussion keep you on the crest of the wave for the full six minutes of this 12” remix.  Other standouts include the smooth up-tempo groover ‘You Are A Blessing To Me’ and the passionate ballad ‘Sunrise.’

•    Following on from their reissue of The Originals Lamont Dozier produced 1975 album "California Sunset,” (CDBBR0044) BBR are proud to present DOWN TO LOVE TOWN, expertly remastered and complete with extensive liner notes and bonus tracks.
