Martin Newell - The last English pop eccentric, brings out his first solo album for several years. Many people try for an authentic 60s sound, Newell actually lives it. This sunny-days mixture wears its Beatles / Kinks influences like a double-breasted paisley jacket is also surprisingly modern though. Contained herein are eleven bomb-proof three and a half-minute pop songs dressed with chiming Rickenbacker 12-string guitars, great garden-shed drumming and the type of gorgeous harmonies that no-one else bothers doing anymore. A Summer Tamarind is nothing less than a post-punk Rubber Soul and probably the best thing that Martin Newell has done since his Andy Partridge-produced Greatest Living Englishman album.

Cherry Red are pleased to announce the release of Martin Newell's brand new solo album. This is the third Martin Newell solo album to be recorded for Cherry Red and marks a departure in terms of his song writing. All songs are new Newell compositions but this time are more in the 'smooth jazz' mould.

Despite never actually stepping out of the limelight, "The Greatest Living Englishman" is enjoying a bit of a revival at the moment - still the most published contemporary poet in Britain and the resident poet for the Independent newspaper, Martin has a 30 minute Anglia/ITV documentary about his life and work already completed ("A Life Of Rhyme - The Martin Newell Story") and this is now scheduled for broadcast in December 2004.
