All Under The Leaves, The Leaves Of Life - Eyeless In Gaza

All Under The Leaves, The Leaves Of Life
Field Martyn not in Database

Released 16/03/09. Originally released in July 1996, All Under The Leaves, The Leaves Of Life is one of the most popular albums of this cult band’s career, including such defining moments as Monstrous Joy and the title-track. The package features a reproduction of the original artwork, plus the inclusion of two bonus tracks, Luscious Word and The Carnal & The Crane . The album received ecstatic reviews on release. For example, New York’s wonderful Big Takeover magazine would state that [Martyn] Bates has an utterly unique voice and lyrical cadence, a soaring counterpart for his and Becker s intricately woven organic and electronic instrumentation. Every song carries like a holistic message borne from high on the breeze. The refinement and grace of EIG bears no comparisons. Three Ships is simply transcendent. EIG are a treasure, as uncommon and stunning today as ever.

Hypnoprism
After a two-year foray into book-writing and contemporary art, Momus returns to pop with his strongest release in over a decade. This time he's focused on what he calls "the catnip factor". Just what is it that makes us want to play a great song over and over again on YouTube? What is it about some simple chords and rhymes that really gets under our skin and penetrates deep into our memory and emotion?

After avoiding pop, or asking it to do things books and art can do better, Momus suddenly found himself, in the spring of 2010, playing his favourite songs on YouTube, drawing inspiration for new songs from them, recording the songs and making videos for them during marathon "videosong" sessions, then uploading the results straight up to YouTube.

The Hypnoprism album is the "hard copy" of this process of falling back in love with pop music via its greatest visual moments. And although "hypnoprism" isa made-up word, it might as well be a synonym for YouTube itself: that hypnotic prism that makes songs visible.

Summerisle
Summerisle' is a new album by Momus and Anne Laplantine, two recording artists based in Berlin, Germany. Momus is a singer, songwriter, globetrotter and 'human synthesizer' who, as well as releasing his own peppery albums on British indie labels from 4AD to Creation, helped mastermind the 1990s Japanese pop boom known as Shibuya-kei, scoring several top ten hits. Since then he's lived in New York, Tokyo and Berlin and moved towards a sort of baroque electro-acoustic folk style. 'Summerisle' is a collection of computer folk songs featuring the voice of Momus accompanied on guitar and computer by Anne Laplantine (whose own albums appear on French, German and Austrian labels like Gooom, Tomlab, and Angelika Kohlerman). Reference points for Momus are the cult 1972 horror film 'The Wicker Man' (with its brilliant fake folk soundtrack by Paul Giovanni) as well as field recordings of old Japanese people and the ethnomusicology of Alan Lomax. References for Anne Laplantine are artists like Fennesz, Jim O'Rourke and Goodiepal. 'Summerisle' is a beautiful and soothing record positioned in the blurred area where ironic computer folk morphs into the real thing. Anne and Momus have succeeded in giving their synthetic 'Summerisle' some of the magic of Prospero's island in Shakespeare's play 'The Tempest': It's the perfect soundtrack to the lazy, folky summer of 2004. Joemus
Released 24/11/08. Joemus is a collaboration between veteran Scottish "electronic vaudevillian" Momus and Glasgow breakcore whizzkid Joe Howe (Gay Against You, Germlin, Ben Butler and Mousepad). Joemus is the 18th studio album from Momus, who's been releasing albums on British indie labels like 4AD, Creation, Setanta and Cherry Red since the early 1980s, to widespread critical acclaim. Joe and Momus first collaborated on a cover of David Bowie's Ashes to Ashes in 2007 for a vinyl-only box set compilation called Recovery. Momus calls the style they've achieved on the Joemus album "Nintendo Glam Rock". Joemus contains cover versions of songs by Cliff Richard and Ryuichi Sakamoto. It alternates between blippy breakneck breakcore and melodramatic-yet-absurd 1950s-style ballads. The album has a strong theme of comic horror: Dracula can't muster the lust to bite a victim (a vocal cameo by Kyoka Kyoka, a Japanese laptop noise musician), Ichabod Crane becomes a "pumpkin brain" over music pastiching Manchester post-punk, and a Tony Newley-type crooner is carried off his music hall stage in a coffin.

A Distant Shore
Tracey Thorn is one half of Everything But The Girl. 'A Distant Shore' is Tracey's only solo album and is classy, simple melodic tunes with just vocals and a guitar. The album reached number one in the Indie chart in 1983. 'A Distant Shore' is now being re-issued with a new booklet, and with the surge in popularity of Everything But The Girl with the international hit single 'Missing', interest in Tracey's solo recordings has never been higher. The essential Cherry Red LP, A Distant Shore is a timeless classic. Recorded for just £138 when she was just 20 years old, it is an astonishing demonstration of Tracey's songwriting talent, stripped down to vocal and acoustic guitar. Both the single Plain Sailing and the album featured strongly in the indie charts, and the LP has now been certified a silver disk with over 60 000 sales in the UK. Tracey was in the Marine Girls and of course went on to form Everything But The Girl with Ben Watt. Our Price: £9.95
